Title: Mini-Merc system (under construction) Post by gdonovan on 04.08.07 at 19:11:37
Ebay Auction:
http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&rd=1&item=300131728657 Testing brick in current Mercury system: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mGduCYU8HRs New brick installed in "short case" The case was obtained off Ebay several months ago, it is identical to the cases used by Quantum3D except it is a few inches shorter! You can see the difference in the fan spacing up front. I was able to obtain a Q3D fan grill several months ago from a friend at Q3D, and the correct backpanel with Mercury connector knockouts is upstairs in the attic (I'll install it later after I get some stuff sorted out) The GX motherboard was a spare along with the ECC ram and P3-500's... The Power Supply is a correct 425 watt unit from PC power and cooling (grabbed several months ago off ebay) the only thing left I have to dig up is a blockoff plate for the hard drive, a black cd rom drive and a black 2.5" bay adapter for the black floppy drive. I'm missing a PCB for the medusa connector but have several leads on obtaining one or I'll just make one from a dead 200SBi board. System is up and running with a full NT4 install, all updated. The cables are all still a mess, I'll get that neat and tidy after settling the drives. |

I guess I need to make another Medusa PCB eliminator cable. And a medusa cable as well :-
You could just go direct to VGA and run 2 monitors. |

See pinout here-
http://www.3dfx.ch/gallery/main.php?g2_view=core.DownloadItem&g2_itemId=24831&g2_serialNumber=1 Note in the picture above- DB-15 VGA pin numbers 5, 6, 7, 8 & 10 are all grounded together via the Mercury I/O PCB! Doing the pin check with a Ohm meter, Medsua cable, floppy cable and my I/O PCB this was confirmed. Take the wiring from the FLOPPY CONNECTOR pins 19, 21, 23, 25, 27, 29, 31, 33 and just join them together. Then hook the combined ground wiring to VGA CONNECTOR pins 5, 6, 7, 8 & 10. It will take two monitors to use the system like AAlchemy or you could simply use a monitor switcher when using the sytem. http://www.3dfx.ch/gallery/main.php?g2_view=core.DownloadItem&g2_itemId=24832&g2_serialNumber=1 http://www.3dfx.ch/gallery/main.php?g2_view=core.DownloadItem&g2_itemId=24836&g2_serialNumber=2 http://www.3dfx.ch/gallery/main.php?g2_view=core.DownloadItem&g2_itemId=24839&g2_serialNumber=1 http://www.3dfx.ch/gallery/main.php?g2_view=core.DownloadItem&g2_itemId=24840&g2_serialNumber=1 System has been running for several hours like this with no problems. |

For you guys watching the You Tube. Remember the image quality cannot be reproduced by You Tube. To actually see these demos on a Mercury System is something to behold.
I need to get off my butt and get started on mine :-/ |

Not to mention shot with a digital still camera in Quicktime format off the LCD, converted to MPG to get the file size down to something Youtube will take (the original was 170 mb) and then converted to flash movie. |

I guess I need to make another Medusa PCB eliminator cable. And a medusa cable as well :-
Bob you want to use the adapter I made? I'm thinking of making another with in->out connectors from a voodoo II board and I could just send you the one shown here. |

Yes 8)
It would be useful in testing to say the least. I don't even know if my Brick is functional :-/ |

New VGA connector being assembled with pass-thorugh, the connectors and backplate were robbed from a dead STB Voodoo II. I have everything pinned out and should have it tested in an hour or two. No Medusa cable required, just a plain old Voodoo I/II cable ;D |

It did and they were removed a year or two ago. The Frame buffer only supports 4 MB (see spec sheet) but the TMU's support 8 each... so I do have a VII with 20 MB of ram upstairs but it had rendering errors and the ram size was mis-reported in Windows. I think some strapping options have to be set but do not have that information. |

The Mini-Merc looks great.
If you hadn't told us, probably nobody would have noticed the case was 2" shorter. Nice Job ;) |
