Title: Voodoo5 5500PCI MAC, was it upgrade only?
Post by ultima on 24.04.13 at 15:19:42
hey guys,

as far as we know, were there any MAC models that came with the 5500 PCI standard, or was it only available as an upgrade later on?

If some models came with it from factory, does any1 know which models those were??

You mean a Voodoo MAC without DVI output?

As far as I know there is only one resistor that is set different to a normal V4/5 PCI.

any voodoo5 would do :)

prefferably the dvi version, if there were mac models that came standard with that card, I'd love to know, cause I know someone who has a load of MAC's from that era and I don't feel like going them all :)

from what i have gathered it was only an upgrade option. i don't think 3dfx was around long enough after the mac version was released to get it into any production macs.

I would try and see if there were anything in the press releases, having it in as a standard option for production macs would have been a big victory for 3dfx if they could have gotten apple to support that.

talking about DVI on the MAC version...there are PCI V5500 for PC which have the holes to put in a DVI connector, yet they decided to not put it on (to keep production cost lower?)

If someone decide to solder a connector in place on a V5500 PCI, for PC, would this work just fine?

Yes of course there would be the problem of finding the right bracket to fit both DVI and VGA connectors at the right location on the card, but technically speaking, does the V5500 PC drivers support DVI as well?

well, seeing as they would have to keep the production costs as low as possible, I would figure that the 5500PCI has 1 pcb layout, all would have dvi capability.
only difference would be the connector and the bios ofcourse, and maybe a separate chip to enable dvi, but that would be it.

have a look at a picture of a 5500PCI and a 5500MAC and try and spot differences, aside from the dvi connector

Not quite. You need much more than a simple DVI connector, you also need to solder a "SiliconImage" chip, some resistors, capacitors, etc. And you need to enable the DVI output in the BIOS (V5 BIOS).

so all in all, officially there's only 1 Voodoo card with DVI for PC? and the possibility to mod the BIOS of the MAC card to make it PC-compatible?

You can flash a 5500MAC to pc, really easy. Did that not too long ago, works like a charm on win98se and win2k

So the PC 5500 PCI Bios does support DVI then?!
