Title: V5 win98se driver installation
Post by Maf on 18.06.09 at 01:05:14
I didn't use both win9x and voodoo cards since 2002 I guess, and now when I try to come back, it's such a pain in the ass. My silly question is: does voodoo driver installation is just running setup and rebooting? Or do you then have to install the glide driver and other stuff? I've just installed latest reference driver for my V5 5500 and ok, there is this 3dfx tray tool, d3d works (at least in 3dm 2k), but when I run 3d setup from NFS3, there is no glide device. What do I crappity smack up? Was it really so hard to install a stupid driver back in the days? I really don't recall :P
My machine is v5 5500, amd athlon 750 and this crappy windows 98se.
You are all welcome to help :)

..afaik,you just run setup.exe (assuming you have the full driver-3dfx tools included),everything loads, reboot, and you are ready.

nfs3 needs a special treatment,see here: http://www.falconfly.de/cgi-bin/yabb2/YaBB.pl?num=1077242013/6#6

Yep that patch helped I guess ;)
Not to start a new thread, can you tell me what score should I expect in 3dmark 2000 default benchmark with Athlon 1GHz? I get about 3950 points using 3dfx Voodoo4/5 V1.04.00 drivers. I googled around and it seems, that this is like 20 % below expectations. Are there any bios/driver settings that I should look over?

no idea.I'm not much of a 3dmark person-I don't like games you cannot win (thats why I was never really into this real life thing either-no matter how hard you try its always game over you are dead at the end)..

Ok, good point :) So I've installed latest stable MesaFX and here's what I got:
Quake 3 Arena, demo four (1024x768x32 gl driver: default (I guess I can't switch to 'voodoo' driver), everything maxed out): 43.5 fps
Unreal Gold, timedemo (1024x678x16 Glide, everything maxed out): 95.2 fps
And 3dmark 2001 SE default benchmark: 1607 points
What can you tell me about these numbers?
Oh is there no support for OpenGL in Unreal? :O

I did some tests with self recorded demo in UT GOTY:

Looks like something is limiting my Voodoo. Any sugestions are very welcome :)

Edit: Maybe you can suggest some further tests?

Well... The results seem more or less in order... However, you didnt state what machine are you running your voodoo on? 3dmark score can vary from 500-2700, depending on the driver and the CPU.

Minimum FPS in UT99 GOTY is defined by the "Minimum desired framerate" from the main menu options, so dont take it as granted, for the game will automatically reduce the level of detail to provide at least the minimum :-)

Sorry, my bad. My cpu is Athlon 1 GHz (Slot A, 10x100 MHz) + 256 MB RAM. According to your TIP, I did to more tests:
1024x768x16 Glide:
Min fps set to 10: 33/59/89 fps
Min fps set to 100: 36/62/88
Ok, let's say it helped a bit, but what it really does?
And regarding my CPU, I thought it will be enought for the voodoo, it was one of the fastes cpu at the time (with $ 1299 price tag ;)).

No its not :-)

CPU limit is reached at about 1.4 Ghz, so there is still room for improvement. If you have a second revision of thunderbird, you may overclock it to 1.33Ghz, just with setting FSB 133Mhz and increasing voltage a bit. 1.775V should do the trick; even 1.8V, but not more then that. Then do the tests again  ;)

Nope, this is Pluto/Orion core ;) So may we assume, that my voodoo is ok and rest of the machine is just to weak? Top platform for voodoos is KT333, right?

I have an AMD Duron 1400,AMD Sempron 2600 and an AMD Athlon 1600,they are no good to me,I don't have an AMD machine anymore :-/,let me know

Thats right :-) Top platform for AGP voodoo is KT333. For PCI versions... Well.. sky is the limit ;-)

Ok I did some more tests, win98se / ref 1.04.00 driver:
EDIT: quake 3 arena: v. 1.32, demo 'four'
unreal tournament: v. 436, self made demo

Cleary figures that CPU is limiting voodoo, but with q3 in higher resolutions voodoo is reaching it's limit. Is it due to opengl ICD shipped with ref 1.04.00 driver?

P.S. Thorton 2000+ is on the way ;)

So I refreshed my machine and here are my latest scores:

Do these results look now alright? Like for an average voodoo 5 5500? :) Should I upgrade drivers or anything else? Any suggestions are very welcome.

Thats about as high as V5 can go :)
