Installing my Voodoo 3 3500 TV questions...
20.12.09 at 02:04:31

I have a Voodoo 3500 TV video card! I'm running it in an old IBM PC 300PL which is basically a Pentium III 733. I have run this card in it before but had to replace the hard drive. This is a dual boot system. It is XP PRO and WIN98SE.

I installed the Voodoo drivers on the 98 install from the disk that I still have with the card. I don't know what version these drivers are. I plan to update to the latest officially supported drivers for my 98 install unless one of you suggest something vastly better and can support it with some documentation.

I went with the default Microsoft Voodoo drivers for the XP install but am considering going for installing a good third party driver so again, I'm asking for suggestions there too.

Lastly and mainly, I'm wondering if I have to uninstall the old drivers before upgrading them on the 98 install or do I just install the latest drivers right over the original ones from the CD? Let me know people. Thanks!

25 views and no response? OK. That's alright. Not everybody has one of these cards and I prefer a proper answer over a best guess.

So here is what I did and here is what I still need to know:

I installed the latest Beta drivers (AmigaSport 3.0) I think they were called for WIN XP and they worked beautifully! For the Win98 I uninstalled the only 3DFX drivers I saw then rebooted and and I installed the last official drivers being 104.02 I think for the drivers and the Visual Reality.

What I want to know is wasn't the 3DFX Toolbox supposed to pop up in my system tray in WIN98SE? It is not there. Help! Thanks all 3DFX lovers!

1) Your title is unclear, it says nothing about your post, that's why you have 25 views and no replies (btw, that's normal, don't freak out over it).

2) Win98; AmigaSport drivers should be the best option here.

3) ALWAYS delete old drivers before installing newer ones.

4) Microsoft's drivers are only basic 2D drivers. 3D acceleration will be done in software mode.

5) Is the 3dfx toolbox installed properly? Can you start it manually? If so, you might have to add it to the startup folder in Start > Programs. (Maybe not even neccessary; there might be an option in 3dfx Tools)

Thanks NitroX infinity for the reply. I changed the topic title as you suggested. Good call. Sorry it wasn't clear before. With the Amiga Sport Drivers on WIN XP I did get a toolbox in the system tray. The default yet latest officially supported drivers I installed for WIN98SE did not put a 3DFX Toolbox in my system tray. It just isn't there. I think I installed everything right but...I don't know. It just isn't there. I was wondering if it was another install I needed to download or something.

OK, I noticed in WIN98SE that I do have a 3DFX Toolbox in my control panel and no there is not one in my system tray. The one in my control panel opens up and I have three listings there with boxes next to each of them that have checks in them. They are:

3dfx Info
3dfx TV
3dfx Tweaks

If I click on any of them the check goes away and that is all. They give me no access to anything cool or options or anything like it should. I feel like I didn't install something I guess.

10 Mar 2000 3dfx Voodoo3 3500 V1.04.02 6720k ZIP US Version, WHQL Certified

10 Mar 2000 VisualReality V1.04.02 17095k ZIP US Version TV Software

I have the 3dfx FM and 3dfx TV icons on my desktop.

It might just be that the drivers dont have any demos to watch etc. Sometimes the oem drivers are just barebones and only do what they HAVE to do. And strictly just that. Do your games run? Test your games and let us know how it goes.

The games are fine. I'm just frustrated that the 3dfx toolbox doesn't offer squat as far as options. I'm pretty sure it is missing something. I can't adjustt AA or any of the settings for anything. There are no enable or disable options for any option.

I'm a moron. The settings I was looking for were in the advanced section of the display settings for my 98 install. On my XP install I have a icon in the system tray that gets me to all of these options. I guess it is working fine.

I thought the 3dfx Toolbox that installed with the Amiga Sport 3.0 drivers was supposed to be the what installed when I installed the official drivers on my 98 install. The XP install has a 3dfx icon in the system trat that is black and opens up to all sorts of options. On my WIN98 install, there is no icon in the system tray but there is one in the control panel. It is white looking and offers no real options. In that same WIN98 install, there are options under the advance tab of the display settings where there ARE a few 3dfx tabs that offer several video options.

The card is working great with both operating systems. What is up with 3dfxit.com? While it is a huge site, it isn't very friendly to get what you need there. The forum seems weak compared to here. Am I right to say this is the last of the real 3dfx sites that can help? Maybe so and no matter. I always get good help here. Thanks all.

3dfxit.com? Hhmm. Ive never heard of it  Ill check it out. Yea. This is a good site. I was out of the computer scene for about 7 or 8 years. Then When I got back into it one of the sites that I still remembered was falconfly.  Wink

Flying penguin came to mind also for quake. haha. theflyingpenguin.com

As far as the 3500 goes. I believe the voodoo 4500 and 5500 are the only cards that will do AA. But, I installed just a voodoo 3000 in a computer I built for my dad. It was funny how the 3000 was faster than what I was used too, since the last setup I had in the late 90s which was a v2 sli. I was able to pick up a v5500 agp on Ebay for about $25 with shipping due to the heat sinks missing.   Wink

But the penguin is nice, old, but nice...too bad that it's very amateur in design.
