Title: Glide + S3TC
Post by SDX on 19.02.05 at 21:55:27
I have bought V5 Mac edition for my PC to fully support Glide in Unreal Tournament 1 and Deus Ex.

Now I was thinking:
# Glide is a 3dfx version of OpenGL
# the best texture quality in UT is in OpenGL using S3TC
# UT was developed for Glide

I'm not a programmer or something, but the logic says - the perfect UT would be on enchanced Glide, which supports S3TC

Is it possible? I have seen that people develop Glide fruther, can somebody make a real Glide with S3TC support?

No, S3TC is crap. I'll look up the review about it. FXTC (3dfx' texture compression) is much better.

In particular, take a look at page 8

@NitroX - NO and NO...if you read the article you'll find out that S3TC is only rubbish on OLD nVidia cards... ::)

...also the article was written a LONG time ago before nVidia fixed their drivers...so S3TC support is O.K. now for those cards! ;)

Besides, why would people want to use S3TC on 3Dfx cards so much if it sucked, think about it! ???

Also, there were rumours of a S3TC supporting GLiDE release sometime ago...(rumours only though!) :'(

S3TC rox baby! 8)

Why do people continue to use America On Line?

Just because other people use something doesn't make it an endorsement of what is best.

Do give it a try though but beware the "if a lot of people do it, it must be good" train of thought.

Okay, learned something today ;D

@gdonovan - uhm...I see your point, but that wasn't what I was focusing on... :P

Only that S3TC is not a 'rubbish' thing! ;)

I'm not saying it's the best, or the worst, or that it should be used "because people think it's good"... ::)

What I do know is that Unreal Tournament + S3TC = really fine visuals! ;D

Anyhow, lets not "flog the dead horse" more than we need to! :P

Nuff said people! 8)

ok, it was great to read all your opinions on S3TC, especialy how it sucks, but what about something ON the topic??!

PS if I ask about S3TC use I should already know if I do like it or not imho  ???

Okay - a straight answer then... ::)

1. Nope it hasn't been done (GLiDE +S3TC) :P
2. It would be 'possible' - if someone with the skills could be bothered or had the time... ::)
3. Yes, it would be VERY cool, as older GLiDE games could (theoretically) be enhanced. ;D

Hope that's the answer you were looking for! ::)

Glide officially supports FXT1, which is an open source compression format designed to replace S3TC and which is now integrated into DirectX and accessible by some OpenGL extensions.  So Glide 3 natively supports FXT1, but as far as I know, has never had S3TC support enabled.  Since the early x3dfx drivers were first released, Voodoo 4/5 cards have had S3TC support enabled for OpenGL and Direct3D, so choose one of those renderers for the compressed textures in Unreal Tournament.  I have successfully run the compressed textures for Unreal Tournament in both Direct3D and OpenGL on my Voodoo 5, and usually get even higher frame rates than running in Glide.  Use Glide for Unreal Gold, but Unreal Tournament is fastest and has the highest quality with OpenGL or Direct3D.

how about Forcing 32Bit Glide in AM3.1 R6 and try runn'n UT 4.36, you will see a slight differenct in detail , game looks a bit darker and has more detail. played @ 1024 x 768 x 32 FSAA x2 on my 5500 AGP Rev.A 2500. It looks like that FXT1 is automaticly enabled in 32Bit Glide...
