Help with Banshee and Linux
04.03.06 at 20:39:04

All of you, I just want to say how great this board still has postings!  Maybe you can help me, because I am going out of my head getting this Banshee to work.

I am using Mandriva 2006 LE, with xorg 6.9... I couldn't get my banshee to do any direct rendering for a long time.. until  I discovered that the rpms that shipped with the distro, specifically the Glide 3.10.0, was missing symbolic links... once I fixed that, I got glxinfo to show direct rendering, and glxgears to show a fps that was good.

However, I can't run anything else 3d... there always is a crash.  Help me install this thing correctly, please!

It's hard following the directions, since things have been so long since they were written.  Xorg is not XF86... the device driver I don't believe is supposed to be compiled anymore...

Please help!

Here is my glxinfo:

IMHO, the best solution is to contact the maintainers of the Distribution.

Since they 'should' test everything they include, they at least may be able to isolate the Problem and offer a workaround/solution.

Otherwise, you could directly contact the Xorg branch and ask them for guidance with older XFree86 Drivers. They should have encountered similar problems during development/compatibility testing and may have an answer at hand as well.

Let me ask you this...

When you upgrade your distro, what do you do to start with?

Do you build from source your files needed for your 3dfx card?  Or do you use the distros files...

I'm thinking that my problem is Mesa... Mesa has to be build to use glide, and why would any distro build for glide to offer generic support.  Unless Mesa can be built for all options, and then just pick what it needs to use at startup...  That's why I figure glxinfo and glxgears works... its using the straight tdfx driver from xorg... any other program must use mesa first, and that's where I fail.

When I tried contacting the person who made the rpm for glide.. their email bounced Sad

I'd base by decision upon which is more current and easy to get working.

My impression is that the 3dfx Linux support in its time alreadly lagged behind.
What is supported out of a Distribution should be more current than the old 3dfx Sources available (the existing official 3dfx rpm's also indicate that, as they are limited useful only for specific, very old Distributions) .

Still, maybe they stopped at 3dfx integration with their X-Driver and very limited GL support. Considering the time it took to find Win32 Programmers to take on the code, that would be likely.

One of the Linux GL capable persons is D.Borca.
He is someone I believe capable enough to pinpoint and solve your Problems.
