In this topic I want to discuss some retail boxes which are quite rare.
People are always talking about '3dfx Interactive, Inc. Voodoo 3 3000 AGP 'EU Retail' or 'USA Retail'
Many haven't even thought of the possibility that there's also a Japanse version of some retail boxes
Since words don't tell as much as pictures do I'll start with some nice pictures
Hey, what's that cool AMD K6-2 3DNow! thing on the right ? The
3dfx Interactive, Inc. Voodoo 3 3000 AGP 'Japanese Retail' By seeing this picture you would say, what ? It's an ordinary box with some Japanese letters I can't read
Well, look how tiny and cute they are
The boxes on the right are the Japanese versions.
Of course the images of the driver CD and the manual :
Click for larger imageNote- The Japanese boxes are a lot smaller, have a less beautiful driver CD and have Japanese letters everywhere
.
As you can see there we're also USA versions sold in Japan. I don't know if there are much Japanese Retail Voodoo 3's. I do know that they exist
Show me more
Well, there are V3 3500TV 'Japanese Retail' boxes, too
They came on the market on 9th October 1999.
If I'm not mistaken these cards we're made because in August 1999 a lot of cards we're sold which had incompatible software with the Japanese Windows '98. With the incompatible software the TV-Tuner did not function.
In some stores you even got some nice T-Shirt for free
But wait, there's even more
I was pictures of a normal looking V3 3000 PCI. The text told me that it was a Japanese Version.
Maybe there's a Voodoo 3 3000 PCI 'Japanese Edition' with small box as well. Let's hope so.
Alright, to the next discovery 8)
We all know the ASUS Motherboard that's bundled with an 3dfx Voodoo 3 ? Well, this one :
Yep, in Japan they've got a different box
Cool isn't it ?
There are more cool things
It's the A-Trend ATC6254 with onboard Voodoo 3 2000 and 16MB of SGRAM. The chipset is the Intel 440BX and the YMF740 chip will get you some nice sound
There's also an ATC6254-3 which is fitted with a Voodoo 3 chipset. I don't have pictures of it but I
assume it has a fan on the heatsink since the V3 3000 produces more heat.
Well, slighty offtopic but box related
(And a nice thing to know)
We all (I assume) have seen those 1337 3dfx boxes with a lot of 'white boxed V3 3500TV cards' inside it (on eBay).
Well, according to this picture 3dfx sended the first cards with old 'STB' boxes
And I also found a nice (but half-offtopic)
picture And yes, all the pictures shown here are quite old. But that doesn't make them boring
