Title: 3dfx 5500 replacement fans
Post by oldskool on 09.03.10 at 22:01:47
Where would I get replacement fans for a 5500 card? Exact size and model number would be a help. I would like to just remove the old ones and put new ones on using the cards power supply. Or are the fans serviceable?
I suppose I need to put 3dfx stickers on them as well.
Dont want to aquire a card only to have it die due to a fan malfunction >:(

I know this is not exactly what you want, but check this out: http://www.scythe-usa.com/product/acc/016/sy124010l_detail.html
It's two times taller than original (better airflow?), dual connectors, reliable company. The prize is somewhat hight unfortunatelly.

EDIT: Acutally it's 10mm tall, so it pretty fits your requirements. But there is also 20mm version.

That's not a proper replacement. Voodoo5 fans have 3 cables. Those have only 2.

Actually it is.. except that you would need a 5V fan. The additional wire serves only as tachometer and its signal isn't even being used. I'll advise you to use TennMax's Lasagna cooler as a replacement. Scroll down on this page for some high-res pictures. (post 12 to be more precisely)

Look at the connector first; it won't fit in the 3 pin socket on the V5. It's not just the cables.

of course it doesn't fit.. you'll need to swap connectors. not to bite your head off, but it's a bit narrow-minded to search for a fan which fits the exact same socket. check my previous post and zoom in on the pictures. you can clearly see that i've used the stock connectors.

Not everyone has the skills to do that.

Well I am sure that some one on here has some avvid or thermal sheild fans that he/she would be willing to part with but I only have one spare set that came off mine. Spent $4 for the Thermal Shield fans on mine from a local Goodwill Store that had the matching heatsinks in near mint condition. I bought them out since they only had two. You can use any 20mm fans but you may need to power them off the psu or the mainboard instead if the don't fit the card. Also new coolers wouldn't be a bad idea. I used two ordinary chipset coolers but had to drill them to ware they would mount cleanly on the VSAs. Them used two Zalman Vram coolers on the back of the VSAs for added cooling. The thermal compound I used is arctic silver5 it does a great job on older gpus and cpus with an IHS.

So it looks like its an aavid if I can find them or go with something powered off the motherboard or psu.

Just order two TennMax Lasagna BGA Type 0 coolers. They have the correct DC voltage so you only need to re-solder the connectors.

It would be best to just find the fans that either use a standard molex or a 3 pin connector that can be used on a typical mainboard instead of getting the power from off the card. Why it is not worth the risk of damaging your card or reducing its value. Getting the fans that power from off the card are very hard to come by.

Here is a video of mine but the only difference for you will be the fans and the coolers.

The coolers are ordinary chipset/vga coolers that had been drilled to war the holes on the heatsink were closer together.

Right that way.
The Original-AAVID Fans doesen't provide the tachosignal. The third wire is dead. So you can use every 5V fan. Simply remove the wires from the Aoriginal-AAVID Fans and install them on the new ones.

By the way, this fan is a good alternative:

My voodoo 5 finally arrived and as expected one of the fans is knackered, got an old NB fan on it at the moment. FOund a topic on here about taking the fans apart and greasing em up, gonna give that a try until new ones arrive.
