Title: Today is a nice day - www.3Dfx.es
Post by osckhar on 15.12.14 at 11:17:07
Hi guys,

Today is a nice day for opening this new thread during more than 5 years speciallized on looking 3Dfx proto cards for my 3Dfx Museum Lab Project.

In that time, more than 5 years, I have known very nice people and gladly I have found very rare items for my project. It has not been easy. Some deals have needed more than 4-5 years  for being closed but who said to collect 3Dfx cards is an easy hobby... Patience is always needed.

I knew was difficult to find such HW because a lot of employees feel a very big admiration for 3Dfx Inc and their cards are the last thing they keep of '3Dfx era' and they keep them for nostalgia and proud to be a ex-3Dfx'er. Sadly I found engineers threw (dumpster recycling HW) their cards years ago (included a lot of V5-6000s and tons of reference and lab cards).

I own a new domain online site www.3Dfx.es where I will create my new 3Dfx Museum.

In this topic I will go posting pictures and info about all what I found.

You will be very surprised about all stuff I got...

For starting the topic I think there is not better pictures than my 3 QUEENs with my new adquisition.

#1 RAMPAGE #B003, #B006 & #B009 + ORIGINAL DONGLE & REBUILD DONGLE

Tomorrow more.  :D

The card from patience, right? The card and dongle that SiRtA did it's preview some years ago. Ok, it's a different card ^^

One thing about the dongle: It's shorter and this can do a lot on image quality.

I know what to do :) Rev A3 of replica dongle incoming.

Did you ever get that Gigapixel board you were after?  :)

Thanks at all!

#B003, #B006 & #B009 - 3 BringUp Rampage boards are functional. The problem is in the RAMAPGE CHIP. Only one chip is 100% functional with 2D and 3D Engine. The others 2 chips only have 2D engine.
3Dfx did a big batch of Rampage Chips at least 150 samples but all needed corrective surgery for fixing some bugs (ding unbaked) and only few chip went fixed.

Actually we are working in debugging the Rampage bios. Once ended we will go for driver.

I never tried to buy the Gigapixel prototype board since owner told me that it was the last thing he owns from his company that he founded. If some one interested I can upload some pictures.

Awesome! Great stuff!

And it is a pride that it's done by a spanish friend.

So, you are planning to put these Rampages in working order, right? not only for static museum? That would be nice!

I am waiting for more pictures and for the site to be operational.

Un saludo Oscar.

DROOOOOOOOOOOOLLLLL :D :D :D :D :D :D :D :D :D :D

I have never seen a voodoo2 AGP, outside the Quantum3D one that Gary has on his page...nice man, is it faster thena PCI part, or is it same?

as for that Gigapixel board, can't help but notice it is nr 19, so that must mean there were more made?! were they all "lost" / destroyed / binned? Can your contact shed any light on that?

Awesome cards man....looking at history that was in the making at that time.

Hello,

Thanks at all!

Quote:
Do you know how many Voodoo2 AGP cards have been made?

For what they told me. Basic batch 10-20 samples for NAKED PCB.

Once in the Labs they starts to work in 1-5 PCB samples, adding components and debugging them. It does not means all  naked PCB are assembled. As orientation for knowing if more samples are built is important to look e-tag but in this case not too much help since it was first sample #A001.

Yes, in test or games where you need bandwitdh. If not, performance is more or less same. Always little better using AGP than PCI version.

Ok, I will request info. :)

--------------------

Today I will start for Banshee prototype cards. I always found Banshee an amazing and interesting card. Here I will be some days uploanding pictures.

I always liked so much engineering tags used in Banshee cards but also in other prototypes 3Dfx cards.

My idea is always find his partner. Normally I got it.  8-) I think the PCI version will be the first time some people see it. Normally the AGP version was sent for reviewer but not the PCI format.

The Banshee samples are lovely! I always liked them (and the Voodoo3 samples), too. They show 'true' (true?.. well older :P) 3Dfx cards rather than the STB-like 3dfx cards.

The V5-6000 box is amazing! I wonder why no-one uploaded pics or mentioned the existance of the box. What is on the back-side of the box? :)

Is there information for initial ideas for the V5-5500 box as well?

Day 7 will be a Velocity 200 box? :)

Tomorrow not more proto box. I have another big surprise. Another nice secret.

I have some other proto box but based on V2. I will show them.

Today I will show you something that few people know and only people who worked in Rampage Chip at 3Dfx.

One of the real Voodoo secrets: Every Voodoo Rampage had a small unused region on the die where we had enough room to paint the initials of everyone who worked on the chip and a tiny image tyranasoras (sp) Rex. The Rampage chip I own has been “decapped” so you can see these things clearly under a microscope.

Agree, is amazing when checking open die under microscope  you see such sweet thing but really is not the only secret. In each chip family there are others secret hidden. For example in VSA-101, VSA-100, AVENGER... With time and If I find the manner I will show them. I need to find a manner to take out 'graphite' cover die.

Now everyone knows another 3Dfx secret hidden in  die chip. Who can arrive at die chip and with an accurate microscope will be to able to find it. :)

Thandor, correct. For debugging the card engineers prefer to work with less memory size ram. Similar Rampage card.

Those wavy lines really shouldn't be there in DOS, I would check the PC you test the cards in for interference... :o

Check with another video card to see if there's still wobbly lines - if YES, then the problem is not the V4-2 card, but the PC. ;)

Today is turn for a pair of nice V5-6000s from Clay Woodson who found a 'Napalm Box send Belfast' with 15 V5-6000.  Caly sold all them across ebay or privately. I have been to able to track some of them with ebay and google tools. Once I found buyer had to convince them but those cards are really nice. #N58 comes from Italy and #N63 from USA - It was used for a V5-6000 review on www.shudian.com but site is down and not sure if V5-6000 review is still online. I guess a lot of people know about what review I am talking about since it was one first review ever done before.

Here little HISTORY LOG:

PROTOTYPE NAPALM SEND BELFAST found by Clay:
(Very nice history inside the box)

V5-6000 CLAY'S BOX + 2 V5-6000 FROM V-Man.

#DAY 31
V5-6000 AGP 3700 A
#N58 STICKER  - 1 PIN POWER BRACKET
#N63 STICKER - 4 PIN POWER BRACKET
Note- Sticker for tracking the card inside SW Driver Team.

Both cards are in perfect condition and 100% functional and stable 8xFSAA with not Hank's Reworks. E-tags are ariginal and with notes from 3Dfx ASIC TEAM.  The V5-6000 N63 came in bad stated but finally it looks now very nice later some tune up. Here as card looked befre and used for review.

I have tracked near all 6ks less a pair of them. One is a 3700 A, I know the person but he does not want to share any info, and the second 3400 A3 N62 NFR but until today not luck with this card - it vanished. I lost the clue once it was sold on ebay back year 2003 but I contacted with buyer and he told me -  I won the auction but never paid for the card. LoL  I still trying to catch it.  8-)

I would also like to know the answers to both.
Quote from Wikipedia - "Approximately 1000+ test cards were produced".

While wikipedia has some accurate informations about 3dfx, there are also some false informations, so...

Then there's the other "question": how many cards survived and are now in the hands of collector's?

Title: Re: Today is a nice day - www.3Dfx.es

@Tim- thanks!!!

----------

1) I only talk about 3700 A rev. - Here my own idea once I did some research but it does not mean I am right but I think it is:

-. From Mexico Factory a min. of 131 Samples. Here I am 99'9% for sure.
-. From Mexico Factory shoud be built at least a  total of 324 samples.

2) I think there are not more than 50 V5-6000 owners talking inside 3Dfx Collectors world. Even I would tell less since some of them sold his 6k same person.

3) From Clay's Box - 90% of the cards are between 3Dfx known collectors. I cant to say names since I think It is private but If I talk by me I own 4 samples from there.

not to be judging any1 ofcourse....but that number of 50 could be a lot higher if some people didn't hog a lot of 6000's :P

Perhaps a bit off-topic here but the majority was chanceless to begin with. Prices have been high for many years. I think just about anyone with enough money has had their chance to own a v56k, so many have been for sale on forums, privately or on ebay. I've could have owned a lot of them if chose to blow my savings.  :)

But collections like these go beyond money. These collections are in the heart. Osckhar has got a big heart.  8-)

Well... before I also was a bit envious about other people having rare 3Dfx cards. Cards that I could only dream of. And to be honest I don't know Oscar very well... but looking at his thread I understand how dedicated was he. How much money and time were spent, how many compromises were made (and I am sure they are a lot), just to get a single rare card. I just can imagine what his collection truly means to him. And that's when I begin to realize that he is the true collector... not like many of us - just hobbyists... Not many were thoughtful enough to contact specific people, not many were ready to spend their last nickle instead of buying something else... Thinking all about this and what Oscar actually is, I slowly started to admire him and the envy was slowly changing into joy. Joy of him having this rare cards. And yes - he deserves it and I am truly glad that he is the one to have all those jewels. I am willing to help with all I can or even only share his joy and happy moments of every single step, no matter if it's a new card, or something else like the Rampage drivers. So these are my 5 cents. Sorry for the offtopic...

Keep 'em coming Oscar! Well done man!  8-)

Hello,

I come back again- too much busy here.  :D

I cant describe with words what I feel collecting such rares cards and owning them.  I started back year 2002-03 and 13 years later I still collecting them and feeling something special for my cards. I have sold, sell and will sell some of them since sadly I am not rich and money always is needed but even so is very hard for me to sell them even the spare cards I have. In my case I own 10 6ks or more but each sample I own is very special or at least It is for me, normally they are in virgin stated, from reviews,  with e-tags and different revisions or reworks. Yes, I dont use them often but sometimes is nice to play with my old pc with an Intel 6k 1500 A1 and test them and see how it works.  It is part of 3D history. I love them but I know and understand people is not agree that same person can own so 6ks since it means other people cant have chance to own them even with money.

----------
It is turn for V5-5500 family. Since I have a lot of V5-5500 pre-production samples I will try to do it fast since if not it will be very bored.

Very nice collection Oscar. Congrats.

I have here a slightly different rework on the U6 chip of Rev1500A0
http://s22.postimg.org/51r11undp/IMG_1078.jpg
http://s16.postimg.org/ge3mjy19d/IMG_1079.jpg

And here is a picture of Rev1500C it has not U6 or reworks and it's indeed curious why they made these slightly different revision in the same week.
http://s9.postimg.org/svq39tz4b/IMG_1081.jpg

Regarding the Rev1800 weren't those the first production cards they shipped and then pulled out because of an issue they found?
After two weeks they released the 1900 with added mouse pad in the package.

Hello Gino,

Engineer sold me 1800 A told me this sample is still a pre-production board and this batch is used for 3Dfx QA Team (Test Quality Assurance) but I dont know if there are 1800 sold for 3Dfx as Commercial cards though. I never saw one before. I only saw one sample on google search and it was used for review card.

I was checking your 1500 A0 picture rework on U6 and compared with my picture 1500 - A0 REWORK 1 is the same rework but in my card V3.3 is taken from condensator side and from your rework is taken from pin IC.

Very nice cards!!! I still did not get chance to get 1500C but I hope do it.

The Rev1800A is pre-production also the 1800 with 1.05 BIOS but there's also an 1800 with 1.06 BIOS and Thermashield fans which can be a production sample since I shares a lot of the characteristics of the Rev1900 which we know for sure was released in retail form.

Hello guys,

Many times without posting but really I am very busy with other stuff.

Here PICS from a nice V5-6000 3700 A with extra C15/C17 condensators. As curiosity VSA100 works 3V instead of 2.8V as all V5-6000 3700 A. Some history- 2.8V caused rendering anomalies with old silicon when clocked at 183MHz- the test were tweaked the V5-6000 higher VCore to  hide anomaly. Issue is fixed on last revision silicon. 320 Rev.

V5-6000 3700 VCore 3V instead of 2.8V

As bonus- Prototype box image. Seems before deciding to use Voodoo4/5 naming the initial intent was to name the new 'family' as Voodoo X.

VOODOO X PROTOTYPE BOX - I guess no one saw it before. I love the face design used on all Voodoo Box.

Enjoy,
Oscar.
