Title: Voodoo Graphics 6MB at resolution 800x600
Post by VooDooMan on 13.02.15 at 11:42:03
I am trying to run my Voodoo Graphics 6MB (Miro Hiscore 3D) to run at resolution 800x600.
I know that in order to be able to do that the card would have to have 4 MB of memory for frame-buffer, or I would have to run it on a aplication with the z-buffer disabled

The problem is that my card has probably 4MB for textures and 2 MB for frame buffer, just like Conpous Pure 3D:

My questions is:
Is it ALWAYS the case that 6MB of memory is dividied in the same way on Voodoo 1 cards (2MB - frame buffer, 4MB - textures?)

On this video https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gxsYJcNex5E we can see Innovision Mighty FX6 with 6MB of ram runnig Quake2 at 800x600... so maybe this board has some other division of memory?

The case with the 8 MB version (Skywell Magic 3D PLUS for example) seems simple:
It has 4MB for textures and 4MB for frame-buffer thus it ALWAYS support 800x600. right?

I'm not sure about normal Voodoo 6MB cards, never thought about the possibility that the memory configuration could be different.

The Quantum3D Obsidian SB50-2220 has 6MB with a 2MB, 2MB, 2MB configuration. The extra 2MB is due the extra TMU on the Amethyst add-on board.

The Quantum3D Obsidian SB50-4220 has 8MB with a 4MB, 2MB, 2MB configuratin. Again the extra 2MB because of the extra TMU, but now with 4MB FBI rather than 4MB per TMU. I did 800x600 benchmarks with this card, so 800x600 runs fine if you have 4MB FBI.

So how do you explain that video with Mighty FX6?

OK, I get it. How about your Skywell Magic 3D PLUS? Does it have 4MB TMU and 4MB FBI?

Could it be he is running an 8MB Voodoo Graphics? In the video I can't really make up how many memory chips his card has but it might be more than on this card. Of course chip count doesn't say everything because the chip density may vary.

I haven't tried running Quake II 800x600 on the 6MB card yet, so can't really say if there are special options needed to be turned off or on.

I would assume it has a 4MB/4MB configuration, but I will check when I benchmark the card.

Well, I think this is exactly the same card but on green PCB

The best thing would be if someone who owns this card checked if Mighty FX6M has 4MB for FBI and 2 for TMU.

Recently I started sorting my collection in boxes and came across a lot of hardware that I haven't added t my on-line database. Guess what; in one of the boxes I found a Mighty FX6M!

After I finished several Banshee-benchmarks I'll get to the Voodoo 1 cards. I hope the Mighty FX6M works because then I can see the memory configuration and test-results myself :).

That's a very very good news ;) I hope the card is just fine, can't wait till you test it :)
