Yeah i'm with you on that one - I'm more than happy to be patient with this kinda stuff, as you're likely to see something just like it up for sale next week. I've let a lot of cards go and have been happy with the few that i've managed to win (except for the dead Obsidian2 :(). You can pretty easily determine what's likely to pop up again soon and what you're not likely to see ever again. Most of the time it's the former, so there's little point getting up a bidding war with someone else on something very commonplace.

I definitely agree with last-minute bidding - I can get a bit worked up sometimes if it's something I really want which gets down to the wire.. awesome feeling if you win it though. I can understand why last-minute bidding doesn't happen much anymore (sniping, etc.) but I think people either don't understand the system well enough or they bid because they then think people will become cautious and back away from it.

Well, technically I am not selling most of it.  The auction is mainly to see what there is interest for and what people are willing to pay.  If the prices are right I will sell pretty much anything :)  Heck, the auction only cost me 15¢ to list, so if anything it's just for fun.  ( I have no intensions of letting the auction end ... will cancel it before then )

I don't think that this is an pic of the actual card since the pic with the box is made on a wooden table or something similar but the other two pics are with a white background.
Another note: since the card is in germany it's relatively uncommon that you have a US-box (which it is in the picture, the "5" of "Voodoo5" is bigger than on the euro-boxes) so I think none of these pictures is of the actual card but gathered from the 'net.

Of course it's not the same card in the first pic and the other two.  Look at fan wires for starters...

Actually, A V3 1000 can have both amounts. The 8MiB card runs at 143MHz and the 16MiB card runs at 125MHz.

I have a Game Wizard with those heatsinks, too, so I think they are stock.

Yes, the Dual Planar was the first Version with 6MB, the Single Planar exists afaik in 2 different Versions (differing in TV-out / no TV-out I think), carrying 8MB.

I as remember the Hercules single planar had revisions from A to D and varied on ram 6 or 8mb and also the later rev (C, D) had a Stereo-out to easily hook-up 3D Glasses like ELSA Revelator.

The adapter that Tim bought is definately the read deal. I can vouch for "pyroini", I know this seller personally and he knows what he is talking about. He has a very rich Voodoo5 6000 history.  

Do not try to use a standard "laptop adapter" on a Voodoo5 6000. Many people have tried in the past, when the real adapter was still very rare. I have never heard of any of them succeeding, but many stories of toasted cards.

Although arguably the adapter could be regarded as not a real Voodoo Volts but a substitute. 3dfx decided to use the leftovers from STB. These adapters where originally intended for some kind of LCD setup called Galileo.

For comparison: the old one has a 3dfx part number, the STB one does not

Well, I got another record, box was shipped 15 november, it came today, 15 december, that's 6 weeks and 2 days. German post is absolutely ridiculous. Wahnsinn!

Cardboard box where it came in got pressed flat on one side, box didn't come wrapped in bubblewrap, just with some news papers on one side. Box isn't in spectacular condition, but it's not bad either.

To avoid such things, I always send a message to the seller similar to the following:

"Please package the item with extra care so that it does not get damaged while in transit. (in another cardboard box with bubble wrap, packing peanuts, etc)  The condition of the item is very important to me and your feedback will depend on what kind of condition the item arrives in.  Thank you in advance for packaging the item so nicely."

Hope that helps some of you...I know it has saved me from a few headaches, as I have only had a few bad experiences.

First-come, first-served IMHO.

First and foremost I did not contact this seller with an offer, the BIN option was always there.  With this particular item it was a BIN, with option of bidding.  So I placed a bid, and then once I got some confirmation from the seller, I retracted my bid and used BIN.  

I just lucked out that no one else bid.  Otherwise my devious plan would have failed horribly. (unless an offer was high enough to cancel the auction and sell directly outside of eBay)

So just like everything in life, it's all about tactics.  I may have just gave away a trick that others have not thought of ... but I really don't care, now it's fair game.

No showing off on my part.  To my knowledge Gary posted the auction after I had already bid on it.  I then simply retracted my bid and used BIN,  no harm there.

In all honesty, I don't think I've seen one on eBay for a long time, I know they are generally not cheap auction style, but what's the going rate for these nowadays?

Nope, I won the first auction of these sealed 5500 PCI's.  I won mine for ~$230... but I got the pick of the litter. (had the seller hand pick the one in the best condition)

The next one from that seller went for ~$260, then $200, and now ~$153.  There is currently another one up for sale right now, and it appears the seller has set a reserve price.

He's going to put a reserve of at least 200.

So after spending more than I wanted to, I finally got my Voodoo5 5500 PCI.

But the seller didn't think it was a good idea to ship a fragile piece of electronics equipment in an actual box.  S/he must have saved all of 35 cents using an envelop.  What's inside was some felt-like stuff that protected less than bubblewrap and even real foam.

I'm so pissed off, I haven't even tested it yet.  Technically USPS was the one that damaged it, but in my mind his/her decision to ship in an envelope made the damage possible.  I also know from shipping with USPS that they are required to ask you if your package is liquid, fragile, perishable, hazardous, etc.  There wasn't even a "fragile" stamp on the box; s/he didn't even tell them!  Finally, there was no pcb warping evident in the pic s/he showed on the auction.

I will test it soon, but even if it works, do you think I'm entitled to my money back?  More importantly, what recourse do I actually have here?

The seller is responsible for shipping the item safely to you which he/she or it didn't do, and the good thing is that you can claim the seller for shipping the product in a very unprotected way and that you received a defect product.

And since you have good photo's that show this evidence they will cover your case. and another thing; you should be able to get a refund via PayPal with this case.

Stupid sellers these days the moron should of packed it with antistatic Bubble wrap in a tight box, since it's a damn VGA card not a frikk'n piece of card board, such things do piss me off as well, I know what it feels like to be in such situations. >:( >:( >:(

is this from ebay? I would say,go ahead and demand a full refund.the card is almost destroyed because of sellers stupidity/cheapness.

yes PayPal has a resollution Center, over there you can send in a claim for a refund of your money of an item you bought from ebay and to resolve the problem as thereby letting PayPla refund you your cash, I had this once with an EPoX EP-8K3A+  mobo I bought on ebay the seller sent me the worng mobo type which I paid for he sent me an EPoX EP-8KTA3LC+ with tons of busted Capacitors, I made pics of it as the closeups of the damaged area, and resized them to 800 x 600 in jpeg format and emailed them to the person which helped me get my funds back via the PayPal way and he told me that my pics were perfect as proof.

The seller didn't even reply to me within 2 weeks before this process as during it so within 30 days I did get my EUR 39,36 back from PayPal.

You know, IMHO the loss of a rather rare 5500 PCI is even worse than the loss of money you have ATM. But I hope you will at least get the money back!

Feedback is certainly one of the major things I'd check first before making a bid, but okay it is too late now but even so the way how he listed the auction could have some valuble info as well, on how he would pack it or ship it as such.

Hmm for such a delivery he deseves a Negative feedback, such sellers should be given a negative, but I would wait until you get a refund first so that this seller will get an option that he can't give you a negative feedback ;)

So at this moment you give him a negative as describing on how he packed it ans sent it to you in a very unmannerly way.

He was 100% positive but with only 28 transactions.  Then again, I'm 100% positive with only 22 transactions, so I felt like he deserved a chance.

Hmm oke well his auction looks neat, what you also could do is mail a few pics of the card to this seller and show him how it arrived and that this is not what you expected from a 100% feed backed seller and they you request a full refund for this item, if this doesn't work you can always use the Ebay way then be processed to PayPal's Resolution Center instead.

I received word from Paypal today that they have secured a full refund for the Voodoo5 that someone shipped me in an envelope.  The funds are on their way.  8-)

Now that the case has been resolved, are you all certain that he cannot leave negative feedback against me after I do so to him?

He does not even have the option to leave you negative feedback. (either none or positive)  You CAN however leave him negative feedback if you so choose. That is a tough call.

It isn't a tough choice at all.  I warned him from my very first communication with him that paypal would side with me, and that his chance to avoid negative feedback was to refund me in full.  I gave him numerous opportunities and ample time to do so.  The most he offered to pay was half.  He still never took any responsibility for his shipping choice, from beginning to end.  

I'd love to hear your reasons for why he deserves something other than negative feedback.

I am putting my bet on the fact that it was listed in error.  That is Gold Leader's old card, atleast that picture is.  They probably found it on the web and listed it. (this isnt the first time something like this has happened)

Or, it might be the real deal. But I highly doubt it.

You don't just insert 5000 32Mb unless you are either a scammer, or have tested the card, and listed what the card is called.

The picture is from Obi wans card, hopefully they will list a real picture.

I put my PCI 5500 on Ebay. Its in great condition. I decided to go with the agp version once I realized that 5500 agp compatible motherboards were fairly easy to find.  Of course Ill package it extra sturdy to keep it safe.    ;)

Should be the Tyan Thunder 2500 (S1867).
Mine looks like the same and the board model is also written in the AAlchemy manual, but I dunno for which model right now.

I think the seller relisted the item since the reserve price hasn't been met so the item hasn't been sold.

This is correct, and the seller actually has two systems.  The second one will go up for sale when/if the first one sells.  

I was really hoping for a snipefest at the end of the auction, but no one must care. (plus I think his reserve is high, especially if he is going to pick up the shipping)

If I see the picture I say standard 5500 AGP, but when I look at the text he puts along with it, it seems like he is talking more about something the likes of a 6000 :)

Amen to that.  I always copy and paste the following before, and after purchasing a boxed card:  "I cannot stress enough the importance of the condition of the 3dfx box. (and its contents) Please package the 3dfx box inside of another bigger box with extra care so it does not get damaged while in transit. (with bubble wrap, packing peanuts, etc)"

On a side note, I received my V6k uninsured.. boy was I worried. :)

I think that if you look, you will find. See at the bulk 4500 AGP's going for over 80 euros... You can find this cards around the net, in hardware forums for example....and they are cheap...

The same thing for V5 new and sealed...There was one for weeks on ebay some times ago for 100 USD plus shipping; nobody wanted it! Now, the same item in the same conditions (plus mousepad) goes away....(ok, it depends by period of interest, I understand...).....for 406 USD plus shipping?!?! WTF?? This is something stupid to me...

Many times I missed chances to get some good cards I wanted. But I learned by experience to not be in hurry; time will come with some good news knocking at my door, and so has been :)

Patience is the name of the game.  For n00bs, ebay is like a candy store.

Searching places other than ebay is a good way to get items cheaper.  There is much less attention and lowered expectations.

I can see where many of you are coming from, and I respect your opinions.  However, in many cases we have all been n00bs, and in the future will be n00bs again.  8-)

Time is money, and I would rather spend more money and waste less time.  (I'm not saying I have more money than time, but it's kinda nice to just relax)

In comparison let's say you needed some meat and there was a shortage.  We could talk about going to the store and buying meat for a higher price (eBay), or going out and trying to hunt it yourself. (various forums and websites, ie:craigslist)  Let's just say, I'm hungry for 3dfx and sure the hunt is fun, but the end result is what brings satisfaction.  But hey, what do I know.. I am just some 24 y/o kid. :)

I have a lot of new and sealed items, but I am not searching for them. I was searching for items I still not own and....I just found them new and with cellophane...

IMHO the good of the sealed cards is they are surely complete, full retail...it is a guarantee.

Would be enough found items boxed, in good conditions and full retail for me....yeah, but you probably know; it could be more easy find the sealed ones!

I can see where many of you are coming from, and I respect your opinions.  However, in many cases we have all been n00bs, and in the future will be n00bs again.  8-) Time is money, and I would rather spend more money and waste less time.  (I'm not saying I have more money than time, but it's kinda nice to just relax) In comparison let's say you needed some meat and there was a shortage.  We could talk about going to the store and buying meat for a higher price (eBay), or going out and trying to hunt it yourself. (various forums and websites, ie:craigslist)  Let's just say, I'm hungry for 3dfx and sure the hunt is fun, but the end result is what brings satisfaction.  But hey, what do I know.. I am just some 24 y/o kid. :)

That is correct and a good analogy.  Time is money.  What is your time worth?  Minimum wage here is $10/hour... but I'd rather put my efforts into doing other things for that price.

The most exciting part of collecting is the actual collecting.  That being said, not having to spend time looking for items and enjoying your collection is a relief and allows you to move on to new things.

I think that they didn't get the REAL 3dfx glory, the best 3dfx cards were Voodoo1 and Voodoo2. Voodoo3 and the rest were ok, but they were simply not THE BEST, top of the top. Especially Voodoo5 - it was outperformed by GF2 Ultra. I don't get it, REAL collectors should look for rare cards and cards that made history, V5 was almost a failure :(

But hey, people hear : 3dfx cards - good for collection, so let's try to get the fastest 3dfx cards. True, they are the fastest, but not the greatest (during that time).

That is one of the reasons why I started collecting actually. (awesome box art, the faces are just cool as hell) Being kind of young and without a strong computer background I did not have any 3dfx cards growing up.  At one point I had a Voodoo2 in the system but by no means was I really into computers.  I then started collecting more of the cards and whatnot because I missed out on so much awesomeness.  I got my first computer when I was 16, and it came with a TNT2 Ultra. (my first videocard)  My friends dad had an old V2 laying around so I put that in but never really used glide. (only with UT)

@goriath - I will be going through all my 3dfx stuff in the future and getting rid of some.. so keep yer eyes open. (the count is 4x 4500 AGP, but only the one sealed)

Probably, they are not true collectors, so can spend much more money bidding on cards they prefer, V4s and V5s in this case.

Haha, I have to admit that. I am a maniac of perfection too. Many times I bought cards only to obtain better box and/or get some missed items, but keeping rationality. To spend 200 euro only to get a better paper box, is not rational to me.

I became very serious about PC Gaming around early 1998.  I opted to skip the Voodoo 1 and wait for the V2.  The first game I tried was Jane's Longbow 2.  OMG, it was like I died and went to heaven.  I immediately purchased a second card and went SLI (2x Creative labs 12 MB).  The V2 SLI combo was hands down the king for what seemed like forever.  I still have both cards and the boxes to this day and have no plans to sell out.

As far as collecting goes, I think there are different types (and shades) of collectors.  Some collect to put pretty shrink wrapped boxes on their bookcase, some collect to play and tinker with the cards, and there's also folks that fall in between.  I personally collect video cards (3dfx in particular) so I can actually experiment with them.  I love tinkering and tweaking to get games running faster or looking better.  This is hard to do that when the card is tucked inside a box with original strinkwrap on it.  So there's just no way in my mind that a sealed V5 5500 AGP is worth $400+ (especially considering how common the AGP version is).   But....that's just me.

I think if someone handed me an original sealed V5 5500 AGP box, I'd probably tear it open just to see how a new 5500 card smells.  I actually got the pleasure of doing that very thing with my Q3D X-24 that I snagged off ebay last year.  The jerk seller shipped it with no packaging, so the shipping label was taped to the shrinkwrap.  I was furious.  The box was roughed up, so I figured what's the point of not digging in.  I was stoked because I'd dreamed of getting an X-24 ever since it came out. ;D

If you mean the Obsidian2 that should be the Arcade-version of the S-12 PCI but with an added slot plate. Since the 90-2440's VGA-out fed into the VGA-in of an Arcade-board there was no need for a VGA-in, TV-Out or SLI-connector so it could be cheaper.

If you check his feedback you can see he bought another Raven PCI for about 140 USD. BTW now the price is doubled

The V2 from diamond instead, the multiplier/ratio is now something like 13x

It depends, items like V5 5500 (especially PCI versions) are getting very expensive, people bid on those like crazy, I think there are a lot of noobs that think they are very valuable. On the other hands, V1, V2 and other early cards can still be found for peanuts. Works for me.

Why not build one yourself? Since I have an original Medusa cable it was fairly easy to trace its pins. It uses an industry standard DHS-26P connector which you can get about anywhere. I needed a longer cable for one of my cards so I took one from an old monitor and resoldered its connector. If memory serves me well I've bought one at Sacramento Electronics which resides in Rancho Cordova, California. They're about $1.65 a piece, so you won't even feel it in your wallet. ;)

Being a member of Allegro, I cannot recommend using it for such things as Voodoo and 3Dfx.


Firstly, our postal service is terribly unreliable and most sellers will not post with insurance.
Secondly, most items received are not received as described or photoed are usually damaged or broken.
Finally, 3dfx products were not sold in Poland but imported from Europe.  So there aren't a lot of 3dfx items available and it is extremely rare that anything will come up.  If something usually comes on Allegro, it's a 3dfx voodoo1, no software, cables or box and usually untested.  ::)

But that's just my opinion and that of all my friends which use Allegro.  We prefer eBay!  :)
