Title: 3Dfx Related eBay Auctions - Discussion Post by rottentreats on 27.07.08 at 02:05:56
Obviously I started a topic like they have over at VA so that we don't clog up the actual auctions page...
Back on topic - 3dfx Voodoo2/Voodoo 2 1000 12MB PCI FACTORY SEALED RARE - http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&rd=1&item=260267510047 I put the auction $30 over what I payed for the item total. That seems competely fair in my book. I guess we will see how badly someone wants the item... or does not. It's all about supply and demand... some people have a hard time getting a grasp on that idea. If you don't like my auctions and my prices DON'T bid/watch or most importantly whine about it. I don't need your type. Everyone else, Welcome! Enjoy! ;D |
Title: Re: 3Dfx Related eBay Auctions - Discussion Post by gamma742 on 27.07.08 at 06:13:29 It's about time for a new "eBay Auction" thread anyway. The old one is over 6 months old and getting a bit long on tooth. Perhaps Admin will lock the old one and let it drift off the page.. |

Yeah... $150 for an old baseball cap with a logo on it... I would say that someone fell off their rocker.
I am going to the mall this weekend and I am going to have some custom flexfit 3dfx caps made. It is going to be high quality embroidered stitching too. I will post pics when they are done. |

Seller had 2 available and the buyer took them both @ 150USD each..
Correct me if I'm wrong :-/ :-/ |
Title: Re: 3Dfx Related eBay Auctions - Discussion Post by deNs on 31.07.08 at 08:36:07
That's just insane - I guess those who are selling off their unwanted 3dfx merch are rubbing their hands because people are prepared to shell out this much for it..
One little rant I thought would be appropriate here: I really don't get why people start bidding wars when you've got like 3 days to go on an auction. Even putting a single bid in several days before an auction ends. It really annoys me when i'm watching auctions for like 5 days, only to have two other people bump up prices ridiculously a couple of days before it finishes. Sometimes it just gets way too far out of hand.. ---dens |
Title: Re: 3Dfx Related eBay Auctions - Discussion Post by razrx on 31.07.08 at 12:21:55
As far as this auction goes: http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&rd=1&item=290248350843
It's a dutch auction so, the high bidder doesn't understand how Dutch auctions work..... 150.00 was his max (which is wayyy too high anyways), if this was a regular auction. LOL |
Title: Re: 3Dfx Related eBay Auctions - Discussion Post by deNs on 31.07.08 at 13:56:00
A dutch auction? So you can set the kind of auction you want? I guess it wouldn't say "place your maximum bid" if that were the case, which it seems is what happened. The guy must be spewing :P

Title: Re: 3Dfx Related eBay Auctions - Discussion Post by Kaitou on 31.07.08 at 19:04:54
I don´t understand... You place your maximum bid?? what?

Title: Re: 3Dfx Related eBay Auctions - Discussion Post by razrx on 01.08.08 at 00:19:32
heh, I've done that before with Dutch auctions.... Only once though and not that high of a bid. Thank goodness. :)

I used to agree with you on this so I know how you feel.. Nowadays I just kick back when they start those early bidding wars. It's sort of a let down when they exceed my max bid that I haven't cast yet BUT!! Then I know I needn't bother wasting my time watching it further and check back after the close to assess the damage. I really like a good battle in the final seconds. It REALLY gets my heart racing ::) I had more than a few good deals both buying and selling. I've learned over the years that some are too good to pass up while others I would have been better off waiting until next time. It's all entertainment in the end.. You'll do far better in the long run with patience as your partner |

Yeah i'm with you on that one - I'm more than happy to be patient with this kinda stuff, as you're likely to see something just like it up for sale next week. I've let a lot of cards go and have been happy with the few that i've managed to win (except for the dead Obsidian2 :(). You can pretty easily determine what's likely to pop up again soon and what you're not likely to see ever again. Most of the time it's the former, so there's little point getting up a bidding war with someone else on something very commonplace. I definitely agree with last-minute bidding - I can get a bit worked up sometimes if it's something I really want which gets down to the wire.. awesome feeling if you win it though. I can understand why last-minute bidding doesn't happen much anymore (sniping, etc.) but I think people either don't understand the system well enough or they bid because they then think people will become cautious and back away from it. ---dens |

Well, technically I am not selling most of it. The auction is mainly to see what there is interest for and what people are willing to pay. If the prices are right I will sell pretty much anything :) Heck, the auction only cost me 15¢ to list, so if anything it's just for fun. ( I have no intensions of letting the auction end ... will cancel it before then ) My 3dfx stuff is just taking up too much room.. and 75% of it just sits in the closet. I would rather spend that money elsewhere. (recently bought 46" LCD TV and a new computer) PLUS I would rather see someone putting these items to use or at least displaying them. It's a shame to have them sitting in the dark. :) |

It's all about working the system. Long story short, I've worked, and am working eBay's system. I don't forsee them doing anything anytime soon. I do however forsee myself making these kind of auctions again in the near future. It is working out surprisingly well!
$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$ 8-) ~20 messages thus far.. not too bad. The most interesting message yet goes like this : "What is your bottom dollar you are willing to take for everything? Think about it cause im ready to take it all if the price is right?? Take a couple days and ponder on this and let me know but dont wait too long cause im looking everywhere for a good deal on these and have a couple bites but just happened to see your add! Thanks, Dave" Other than that most people are interested in all the v4's and v5's. Offers ranging from $30, to $180. In the end I think I am just going to list them again for the highest offer and then people will bid. Brilliant :) |

Nice find! |
Title: Re: 3Dfx Related eBay Auctions - Discussion Post by rottentreats on 13.08.08 at 23:58:45
Yeah, not too bad for $15. :) I will get some high-res scans of the catalog when I get it in my hands.
@ eclypse - I got this from the Prey wiki - "Prey had been in development in one form or another since 1995, and has had several major revisions. While the general approach to gameplay, including the use of portals, remained in the game, the story and setting changed several times." So I guess the idea of prey has been around for quite some time. On another note, here is something I scanned from a Linux magazine reviewing the Voodoo5 5500 AGP - |

I could try to get her to let me take a pic of her in it. If you want??? The color is like a gray sweatshirt with the new logo. It has those girlie short sleeves ::) I haven't seen many 3dfx chick shirts on ebay. |

This is a weird auction...
The seller is selling a retail boxed V5 5500 AGP card, however it looks like the card is a prototype... There are NOT FOR RESALE stickers on the back of the card. http://cgi.ebay.de/Voodoo5-5500-AGP-3Dfx_W0QQitemZ320298746593QQcmdZViewItem?hash=item320298746593&_trkparms=39%3A1|66%3A2|65%3A10|240%3A1318&_trksid=p3286.c0.m14 |

(From the auctions-thread) I don't think that this is an pic of the actual card since the pic with the box is made on a wooden table or something similar but the other two pics are with a white background. Another note: since the card is in germany it's relatively uncommon that you have a US-box (which it is in the picture, the "5" of "Voodoo5" is bigger than on the euro-boxes) so I think none of these pictures is of the actual card but gathered from the 'net. |
Title: Re: 3Dfx Related eBay Auctions - Discussion Post by rottentreats on 13.09.08 at 00:29:35
Of course it's not the same card in the first pic and the other two. Look at fan wires for starters...

210 $ / 6 = 35 $.
The price of one magazine, at that time was 6.99 $, even 5.99 $ some of the early ones. Going from 7 $ to 35 $ is huge step. 5 times the price in less than 10 years, now that's something you don't see too often for a printed magazine. |

Since 2themax is a pure reseller (the card I have is from Cardexpert/Gainward) I think it's originally from 2themax but the box has been thrown away. |

If I press include title and description I get almost a 1000 as well,
I got two 3DFX searches, One with the box checked (but then only 'computing' category), and item location : Anywhere and another one with just 3DFX, no title and description, but then in any category, and Item location anywhere as well. That should make the card come up, yet it doesn't! >:( 'both include shop as well' |

If you look at the auction you quoted, it's only available for Italy... so therefore, go to www.ebay.it and you'll find it

NEGATIVE - This auction is only for Italy.... You must use www.ebay.it
If it was available for sale for the European Community, you would be able to find it on another EU eBay site, BUT if the seller is willing to ship worldwide, any eBay site would find it. |

Title: Re: 3Dfx Related eBay Auctions - Discussion Post by razrx on 30.10.08 at 20:16:12
It comes down to the way the seller sets up the auction.
Maybe the seller used a "template" or previously used auction, but wanted to modify some features. I think if you can find a post from NitroX Infinity, you'll see an eBay guide under his signature. Try that too, if I seem unclear. :) |

The adapter that Tim bought is definately the read deal. I can vouch for "pyroini", I know this seller personally and he knows what he is talking about. He has a very rich Voodoo5 6000 history.
Do not try to use a standard "laptop adapter" on a Voodoo5 6000. Many people have tried in the past, when the real adapter was still very rare. I have never heard of any of them succeeding, but many stories of toasted cards. Although arguably the adapter could be regarded as not a real Voodoo Volts but a substitute. 3dfx decided to use the leftovers from STB. These adapters where originally intended for some kind of LCD setup called Galileo. For comparison: the old one has a 3dfx part number, the STB one does not |

To avoid such things, I always send a message to the seller similar to the following: "Please package the item with extra care so that it does not get damaged while in transit. Thank you in advance for packaging the item so nicely." Hope that helps some of you...I know it has saved me from a few headaches, as I have only had a few bad experiences. |

There was no Buy it now option was there? It's about him PM'ing the person with an offer, and the seller turns an auction into a Buy it now, and he buys it, usually for peanuts, like in this example. He's done it before, also with an auction I was going to bid on. I'm not having a go at him, I just think it might be worth thinking over again, if it's really that fair on others. But oh well, nothings fair in this world I guess. It's legal, but I think I'm going to do the same in future, I don't want to be caught out any more on things. |

First-come, first-served IMHO. First and foremost I did not contact this seller with an offer, the BIN option was always there. With this particular item it was a BIN, with option of bidding. So I placed a bid, and then once I got some confirmation from the seller, I retracted my bid and used BIN. I just lucked out that no one else bid. Otherwise my devious plan would have failed horribly. (unless an offer was high enough to cancel the auction and sell directly outside of eBay) So just like everything in life, it's all about tactics. I may have just gave away a trick that others have not thought of ... but I really don't care, now it's fair game. |

If there wouldn't have been a BIN option in the first place the description would have been revised and that is noted in the auction (after "Description" you get a notification that it has been revised and you can look what has been revised, e.g. an added BIN price). In this case there was a BIN price when the auction started so it's just a case of showing off what a bargain that was - IMO this thread is for ongoing auctions, not for auctions you won, for that we have the "Who collects 3dfx cards on the board?"-thread, but then again opinions differ. I don't like auctions with "forced" BIN-endings, too, but I won one once, too, albeit I didn't contact the seller, it was somebody else I think, I just happened to see the added BIN price at first. |

I have paid a lot more..
A couple of years ago I've gotten them for a lot less.. If I were in the market for one today I would bid as high a $350.USD but it could go reasonably as high as $450.. As you know all it takes is 2 bidders that want it really bad them it would go much higher. You are correct, I haven't seen one on eBay in quite awhile. |

I'm also in the market for a green "Brick" but rarely one pops up on ebay even more so in Europe. Cheers |

Paid $810 for my first green brick off Ebay and as little as $150
$300 is not bad, make sure to see my Mercury FAQ if you want to get it working. http://www.thedodgegarage.com/3dfx/q3d_mercury_faq.htm Gary |

Nope, I won the first auction of these sealed 5500 PCI's. I won mine for ~$230... but I got the pick of the litter. (had the seller hand pick the one in the best condition) The next one from that seller went for ~$260, then $200, and now ~$153. There is currently another one up for sale right now, and it appears the seller has set a reserve price. |

Title: Re: 3Dfx Related eBay Auctions - Discussion Post by C.Zoui on 16.03.09 at 03:25:53
So after spending more than I wanted to, I finally got my Voodoo5 5500 PCI.
But the seller didn't think it was a good idea to ship a fragile piece of electronics equipment in an actual box. S/he must have saved all of 35 cents using an envelop. What's inside was some felt-like stuff that protected less than bubblewrap and even real foam. The force of the trauma this package suffered getting here was enough to shatter the driver CD! The PCB itself is very warped. It should lay flat against this table! The card looks like it almost snapped in half! I've never seen anything like this. I'm so pissed off, I haven't even tested it yet. Technically USPS was the one that damaged it, but in my mind his/her decision to ship in an envelope made the damage possible. I also know from shipping with USPS that they are required to ask you if your package is liquid, fragile, perishable, hazardous, etc. There wasn't even a "fragile" stamp on the box; s/he didn't even tell them! Finally, there was no pcb warping evident in the pic s/he showed on the auction. I will test it soon, but even if it works, do you think I'm entitled to my money back? More importantly, what recourse do I actually have here? |

This is terrible! [smiley=shocked.gif] [smiley=shocked.gif] [smiley=shocked.gif]
The seller is responsible for shipping the item safely to you which he/she or it didn't do, and the good thing is that you can claim the seller for shipping the product in a very unprotected way and that you received a defect product. And since you have good photo's that show this evidence they will cover your case. and another thing; you should be able to get a refund via PayPal with this case. Stupid sellers these days the moron should of packed it with antistatic Bubble wrap in a tight box, since it's a damn VGA card not a frikk'n piece of card board, such things do piss me off as well, I know what it feels like to be in such situations. >:( >:( >:( |
Title: Re: 3Dfx Related eBay Auctions - Discussion Post by ps47 on 16.03.09 at 03:45:01

Yes it is from ebay. No I did not get insurance.
So there may be a way to go through paypal, not just ebay? |
Title: Re: 3Dfx Related eBay Auctions - Discussion Post by Gold Leader on 16.03.09 at 04:02:58
yes PayPal has a resollution Center, over there you can send in a claim for a refund of your money of an item you bought from ebay and to resolve the problem as thereby letting PayPla refund you your cash, I had this once with an EPoX EP-8K3A+ mobo I bought on ebay the seller sent me the worng mobo type which I paid for he sent me an EPoX EP-8KTA3LC+ with tons of busted Capacitors, I made pics of it as the closeups of the damaged area, and resized them to 800 x 600 in jpeg format and emailed them to the person which helped me get my funds back via the PayPal way and he told me that my pics were perfect as proof.
The seller didn't even reply to me within 2 weeks before this process as during it so within 30 days I did get my EUR 39,36 back from PayPal. |

Title: Re: 3Dfx Related eBay Auctions - Discussion Post by gdonovan on 16.03.09 at 11:13:47
The seller is at fault- Clearly it has not been mailed in a safe manner and Ebay/paypal should be notified.
Insured or not has nothing to do with it. It is really stupid considering that the US Priority boxes are free from the post office. |

That's true! At any rate, I'll definitely be getting a refund. The PCB is so bent that I can't even stick it in a PCI slot. I'm going to be a gentlemen, though, and offer him neutral feedback if he refunds me in full. If not, the gloves come off. |
Title: Re: 3Dfx Related eBay Auctions - Discussion Post by Gold Leader on 16.03.09 at 18:02:06
Hey C.Zoui, do you have an url to the ebay auction?
maybe the feedback of this seller could tell us something as well. Feedback is certainly one of the major things I'd check first before making a bid, but okay it is too late now but even so the way how he listed the auction could have some valuble info as well, on how he would pack it or ship it as such. C.Zoui wrote on 16.03.09 at 18:01:13:
Hmm for such a delivery he deseves a Negative feedback, such sellers should be given a negative, but I would wait until you get a refund first so that this seller will get an option that he can't give you a negative feedback ;) So at this moment you give him a negative as describing on how he packed it ans sent it to you in a very unmannerly way. |
Title: Re: 3Dfx Related eBay Auctions - Discussion Post by C.Zoui on 16.03.09 at 18:09:13
He was 100% positive but with only 28 transactions. Then again, I'm 100% positive with only 22 transactions, so I felt like he deserved a chance.

Title: Re: 3Dfx Related eBay Auctions - Discussion Post by Gold Leader on 16.03.09 at 18:14:16
Hmm oke well his auction looks neat, what you also could do is mail a few pics of the card to this seller and show him how it arrived and that this is not what you expected from a 100% feed backed seller and they you request a full refund for this item, if this doesn't work you can always use the Ebay way then be processed to PayPal's Resolution Center instead.
Anyways you have the full rights to get a refund insured or not like Gary explained. |

I received word from Paypal today that they have secured a full refund for the Voodoo5 that someone shipped me in an envelope. The funds are on their way. 8-)
Now that the case has been resolved, are you all certain that he cannot leave negative feedback against me after I do so to him? PS- He may bend the card back and/or try to resell it. So avoid bigace109, aka Alex Carpenter. http://myworld.ebay.com/bigace109. AFAIK, he still believes that it's okay to send fragile electronics in envelopes. |
Title: Re: 3Dfx Related eBay Auctions - Discussion Post by rottentreats on 08.04.09 at 21:48:39
He does not even have the option to leave you negative feedback. (either none or positive) You CAN however leave him negative feedback if you so choose. That is a tough call.
|
Title: Re: 3Dfx Related eBay Auctions - Discussion Post by C.Zoui on 08.04.09 at 23:42:19
It isn't a tough choice at all. I warned him from my very first communication with him that paypal would side with me, and that his chance to avoid negative feedback was to refund me in full. I gave him numerous opportunities and ample time to do so. The most he offered to pay was half. He still never took any responsibility for his shipping choice, from beginning to end.
I'd love to hear your reasons for why he deserves something other than negative feedback. |

Title: Re: 3Dfx Related eBay Auctions - Discussion Post by Tim on 01.05.09 at 18:44:33 Maybe, I don't know. You don't just insert 5000 32Mb unless you are either a scammer, or have tested the card, and listed what the card is called. The picture is from Obi wans card, hopefully they will list a real picture. |

I put my PCI 5500 on Ebay. Its in great condition. I decided to go with the agp version once I realized that 5500 agp compatible motherboards were fairly easy to find. Of course Ill package it extra sturdy to keep it safe. ;)

None taken. I sell my items for what they are worth. (otherwise they would not sell for the price listed) Plus, in doing so, I was able to justify spending a bit more for a complete V6k setup. (and a ton of extra goodies)
@ exxe, to be correct you would have used "has" and not "have". (but that is of course if you want to use proper English, and not broken English that a 2 year old would use) Oh, and on a side note, I recently caught the attention of a new 3dfx collector on eBay. He has purchased a near complete boxed Voodoo Series. (with an exeption to the 4500 MAC boxes/cards, which are reaaalllly rare) In the package I sent the following: 2x V2 1000 PCI V3 2000 PCI V3 2000 AGP V3 3000 PCI V3 3000 AGP V3 3500 TV AGP V4 4500 PCI V4 4500 AGP V5 5500 PCI V5 5500 PCI MAC V5 5500 AGP Long story short, I made a killing with that, and I rock. Feels good to be 23 and on top of the world. :) |

If I see the picture I say standard 5500 AGP, but when I look at the text he puts along with it, it seems like he is talking more about something the likes of a 6000 :)
In his knowledge, only 25-30 were made?? LOL and were sold for over 1000 euros?? HAHA, I'd like to see some idiot pay THAT much for a regular 5500, albeit a somewhat not too common pcb date. but then again, he doesn't have a picture where it actually shows the pcb date?! is that pcb date known?? |
Title: Re: 3Dfx Related eBay Auctions - Discussion Post by Eye-Q on 11.09.09 at 00:42:06
The seller states that there are no more than 30 known cards of which about 25 are functional - nonsense, maybe he thinks of the v6k...
He also states that some 3dfx-cards went for a couple of thousand euros and that the 149 Euro starting price is low... I don't know if he really believes that a dime-a-dozen-card is worth that money (every other 5500 AGP brings no more than 40 Euros here in Europe, tops) or that he just wants to fool people who don't know the normal market price of that card... |

Title: Re: 3Dfx Related eBay Auctions - Discussion Post by rottentreats on 13.01.10 at 13:14:53
I disagree, I think a factory sealed 5500 AGP (uncommon by itself) with an uncommon mousepad was expected to reach more than expected. Maybe the person(s) missed out their last opportunity and was not going to give up until they got what they wanted.
Once again I will state the obvious, any item is worth what that one (or more) people are willing to pay for it. It does not matter how much they sold for a week ago, or how much it will a week in the future. I have been in similar situations (several times) where I wanted something, and I would put a very high amount to ensure getting what I wanted. Hell, if you got the money, go for it. :) [this was boxed btw] |

Uhm, I do not know. It seems you are speaking as if ebay would be the only chance to get items. OK, it is one of the best way, but not the only way. I think that if you look, you will find. See at the bulk 4500 AGP's going for over 80 euros... You can find this cards around the net, in hardware forums for example....and they are cheap... The same thing for V5 new and sealed...There was one for weeks on ebay some times ago for 100 USD plus shipping; nobody wanted it! Now, the same item in the same conditions (plus mousepad) goes away....(ok, it depends by period of interest, I understand...).....for 406 USD plus shipping?!?! WTF?? This is something stupid to me... Many times I missed chances to get some good cards I wanted. But I learned by experience to not be in hurry; time will come with some good news knocking at my door, and so has been :) |
Title: Re: 3Dfx Related eBay Auctions - Discussion Post by razrx on 13.01.10 at 15:32:58
Patience is the name of the game. For n00bs, ebay is like a candy store.
Searching places other than ebay is a good way to get items cheaper. There is much less attention and lowered expectations. |
Title: Re: 3Dfx Related eBay Auctions - Discussion Post by rottentreats on 13.01.10 at 16:42:04
I can see where many of you are coming from, and I respect your opinions. However, in many cases we have all been n00bs, and in the future will be n00bs again. 8-)
Time is money, and I would rather spend more money and waste less time. (I'm not saying I have more money than time, but it's kinda nice to just relax) In comparison let's say you needed some meat and there was a shortage. We could talk about going to the store and buying meat for a higher price (eBay), or going out and trying to hunt it yourself. (various forums and websites, ie:craigslist) Let's just say, I'm hungry for 3dfx and sure the hunt is fun, but the end result is what brings satisfaction. But hey, what do I know.. I am just some 24 y/o kid. :) |

It was also sealed, not only boxed. Plus one nice mousepad. Anyway, I think that it's not worth more than 200 USD, 150 would have been a good price, 100 USD - a very good deal, a baragin. But 406 ? Way too much, it cost more than it costed when it was new (in 2000). Sealed items are nice, but you cannot enjoy them at the fullest, just looking at a box ? Come on, I'd rather have a much cheaper boxed version - I can test the card, put the card in a display box, read manuals, etc. |

I could not have said it better ;) I have a lot of new and sealed items, but I am not searching for them. I was searching for items I still not own and....I just found them new and with cellophane... IMHO the good of the sealed cards is they are surely complete, full retail...it is a guarantee. Would be enough found items boxed, in good conditions and full retail for me....yeah, but you probably know; it could be more easy find the sealed ones! |

That is correct and a good analogy. Time is money. What is your time worth? Minimum wage here is $10/hour... but I'd rather put my efforts into doing other things for that price. The most exciting part of collecting is the actual collecting. That being said, not having to spend time looking for items and enjoying your collection is a relief and allows you to move on to new things. |

Have you noticed that most of those peoples are searching (and paying high prices) only Voodoo4 and Voodoo5 ?
I think that they didn't get the REAL 3dfx glory, the best 3dfx cards were Voodoo1 and Voodoo2. Voodoo3 and the rest were ok, but they were simply not THE BEST, top of the top. Especially Voodoo5 - it was outperformed by GF2 Ultra. I don't get it, REAL collectors should look for rare cards and cards that made history, V5 was almost a failure :( But hey, people hear : 3dfx cards - good for collection, so let's try to get the fastest 3dfx cards. True, they are the fastest, but not the greatest (during that time). |

That is one of the reasons why I started collecting actually. (awesome box art, the faces are just cool as hell) Being kind of young and without a strong computer background I did not have any 3dfx cards growing up. At one point I had a Voodoo2 in the system but by no means was I really into computers. I then started collecting more of the cards and whatnot because I missed out on so much awesomeness. I got my first computer when I was 16, and it came with a TNT2 Ultra. (my first videocard) My friends dad had an old V2 laying around so I put that in but never really used glide. (only with UT) @goriath - I will be going through all my 3dfx stuff in the future and getting rid of some.. so keep yer eyes open. (the count is 4x 4500 AGP, but only the one sealed) |

Probably, they are not true collectors, so can spend much more money bidding on cards they prefer, V4s and V5s in this case. Personally I like every card 3dfx made, and I like a lot Napalm series as Avenger series too (I am convinced Voodoo3 was not really understood by users). But my first 3D accelerator was an Helios3D Voodoo Graphics in 1997. I agree with you, Voodoo Graphics was a miracle and Voodoo2 was miracle once again! These are the more fascinating cards. Tim wrote on 14.01.10 at 16:36:13:
Haha, I have to admit that. I am a maniac of perfection too. Many times I bought cards only to obtain better box and/or get some missed items, but keeping rationality. To spend 200 euro only to get a better paper box, is not rational to me. |

I became very serious about PC Gaming around early 1998. I opted to skip the Voodoo 1 and wait for the V2. The first game I tried was Jane's Longbow 2. OMG, it was like I died and went to heaven. I immediately purchased a second card and went SLI (2x Creative labs 12 MB). The V2 SLI combo was hands down the king for what seemed like forever. I still have both cards and the boxes to this day and have no plans to sell out. As far as collecting goes, I think there are different types (and shades) of collectors. Some collect to put pretty shrink wrapped boxes on their bookcase, some collect to play and tinker with the cards, and there's also folks that fall in between. I personally collect video cards (3dfx in particular) so I can actually experiment with them. I love tinkering and tweaking to get games running faster or looking better. This is hard to do that when the card is tucked inside a box with original strinkwrap on it. So there's just no way in my mind that a sealed V5 5500 AGP is worth $400+ (especially considering how common the AGP version is). But....that's just me. I think if someone handed me an original sealed V5 5500 AGP box, I'd probably tear it open just to see how a new 5500 card smells. I actually got the pleasure of doing that very thing with my Q3D X-24 that I snagged off ebay last year. The jerk seller shipped it with no packaging, so the shipping label was taped to the shrinkwrap. I was furious. The box was roughed up, so I figured what's the point of not digging in. I was stoked because I'd dreamed of getting an X-24 ever since it came out. ;D |

Well, the Raven PCI is a Banshee. ;)
If you mean the Obsidian2 that should be the Arcade-version of the S-12 PCI but with an added slot plate. Since the 90-2440's VGA-out fed into the VGA-in of an Arcade-board there was no need for a VGA-in, TV-Out or SLI-connector so it could be cheaper. |

Why not build one yourself? Since I have an original Medusa cable it was fairly easy to trace its pins. It uses an industry standard DHS-26P connector which you can get about anywhere. I needed a longer cable for one of my cards so I took one from an old monitor and resoldered its connector. If memory serves me well I've bought one at Sacramento Electronics which resides in Rancho Cordova, California. They're about $1.65 a piece, so you won't even feel it in your wallet. ;) |

The 4500 PCI cards seem to pop us less often than most 3dfx cards, so I would say they are rarer. I think the last voodoo 4500 pci he sold went for about $45 and they usually seem to go for around $45 £45 EUR45 I think recently. Depends if someone really really wants it. |

Finally, 3dfx products were not sold in Poland but imported from Europe. So there aren't a lot of 3dfx items available and it is extremely rare that anything will come up. If something usually comes on Allegro, it's a 3dfx voodoo1, no software, cables or box and usually untested. ::) But that's just my opinion and that of all my friends which use Allegro. Why was my post removed in "3dfx Related Auctions", it was highlighting a TSENG 6000 based card which is regarded as the best companion to a 3dfx voodoo 2?
Just curious is the post purely for 3dfx items or 3dfx related items. :) Could a link to a spectra be posted ? |
Title: Re: 3Dfx Related eBay Auctions - Discussion Post by NitroX infinity on 15.04.10 at 13:48:05
It is purely 3dfx items and items directly related to 3dfx.
|
Title: Re: 3Dfx Related eBay Auctions - Discussion Post by oldskool on 15.04.10 at 14:48:23
Well it was related but I suppose not directly. Nice addition to someones collection or retro rig. I suppose if you had a topic for indirectly related items it would get a bit messy and hard to moderate.

Yes, I see your point. I thought I might have been stretching the rules a little :) But it was such a nice component for an ultimate voodoo 2 setup, but then everyone else would be able to post their ideal components as well and it would all get very messy. :D
3dfx only. |

Nice one, I haven't seen a boxed one on ebay in what seems like ages. Ebay really sucks that way, sometimes an item is only viewable from certain geographic locations, a real bug in the ebay system. Then again......it can turn out to your advantage, like what happened with you. |

Title: Re: 3Dfx Related eBay Auctions - Discussion Post by Tim on 17.04.10 at 22:40:24
Like I've seen again and again, the eBay system has got several severe bugs in it which limits auctions to either one, or a number of geographical locations only.
Settings your ebay advanced search to worlwide does not pick these auctions up. Sometimes it's as restricted to several states or counties. It's weird, but true, many many topics on this all over the internets. :) I look at the Obsidian2 and Obsidian 2 searches twice a day at least, and this did not come up. Going to eBay.com or eBay.de directly helps strangely enough, but even then it misses quite a few auctions. |

I can only roughly translate: It's a V5 Mac flashed with a PC-BIOS, the DVI works perfectly, the seller has neither the original CD nor a manual, drivers are downloadable via Internet.
The seller takes no responsibility if the card doesn't function if it is caused by an inexperienced user. Paccocelere 1 and Paccocelere 3 are shipment standards, while 1 is insured but 3 is uninsured (I think), the seller prefers insured shipping. |

I just received confirmation from my family members in the UK that my EyeScream 3D glasses have arrived today! :)
Here are the photos: The seller was originally selling them on eBay and I was watching them for at least a couple of weeks. His starting price originally being around 99.00GBP, then reducing his Buy It Now to 75.00GBP, then 55.00GBP. Each time he listed them for a week, and amazingly, nobody bid on them! I eventually contacted him out of eBay and he agreed to sell them for just 20.00GBP. 8-) I hear the package is in like new condition and perfectly sealed! Not a bad price I thought. |
Title: Re: 3Dfx Related eBay Auctions - Discussion Post by razrx on 23.04.10 at 21:53:39

I recently won an auction for six 3dfx thermashield fans for a BIN price of $5 US, shipping was $3 US. |

255 euro + shipping. Shipping might be up to 19 euro...so you end up paying 274 euro. That's more expensive than the original price, back then, in 2000. If it was the PCI version and sealed (fully) it might worth it, but not AGP and not sealed. Anyway, I noticed that a lot of peoples ask huge amount of money for V5 AGP, while V1, V2 (much better cards at their times) are solde for peanuts. |

One or two months ago, I spoke with a US seller that initially was not available to ship outside USA. I asked him the reason why, he answered that so many people ask to lie on custom's bill. Finally I was able to reach a deal with the seller; I said him that there was no need to lie on custom fees, 'cause the item (a buy it now item) he was selling, it costed me about 10.00 euros, ship. incl. So I already knew that it would have passed custom's check without any tax ;) ...and as RaverX already said, it was very good catch; Voodoo4 4500 L-shaped for few bucks ;) |

Well, one of the cards I bought is not working. Detects in device manager just fine, but upon launching a game or going to the control panel it locks up. Tried multiple PCI slots, tried underclocking the card to no avail, and the other card I bought works just fine. With that being said, how much would something like this be worth? It is in mint condition and would be great for display. Hell, if someone knows what they are doing they may even be able to make it work.

If you check the on-wing (S2 Sedan) feedback you will also find who is the buyer... ...and the buyer is the second highest bidder for the last V56k seen on ebay, with a max bid of 3,111 dollars ::) He is also the same that tried to over-bid G1nX in the Q3D Ventana3 auction with a max bid of 1,111 dollars ::) What I really don't understand is the reason why at the age this funny bidder didn't pay me the needed postage to ship his Voodoo3 2000 PCI boxed to him; it seems He don't lack of money... ::) BTW, back on topic...it seems that this Voodoo5 6000 will be probably sold for the real price of 2,027.02 dollars to this hardcore bidder |

Do you guys have any thoughts on what a Copper V4 might go for? I mentioned this some time ago, but I'm pondering selling mine: pics. Last time I tried, it booted up with some ancient BIOS (I think v0.24) and had some display corruption. Changing to a newer bios didn't change anything, so I assume the board would only ever be partially functional.
To maximize the sale, I'm thinking about tossing in the 'blank' V3 that I have: pics ...and maybe a V5 AGP. Not sure I can ever part with my PCI. :) I guess I'm just not sure if it'd be worth the time it'd take to list it. I'm not going to just throw the card out, but I'd have to list it, then find all of the message boards... Plus I'd be losing my baby... heh. Thoughts? |

What is the reason to but a non-working card? Is there a way to fix it?
|
Title: Re: 3Dfx Related eBay Auctions - Discussion Post by RaverX on 28.11.10 at 16:52:31
I higly doubt it's fixable. If it was I'm sure that the owner would have fixed it by any means (Hank Semenec included).
How about the buyer ? 1. Maybe he didnt' read that the card is dead - in that case he's really stupid, when you bid such amount of money you read everything 10 times. And you ask questions. 2. He thinks he can fix it. Again - I'm 99.9% sure that he's wrong. 3. He doesn't care, he has a lot of money and wants a V5 6000 for display - but it's a strange choice - with those money he could buy a good one... 4. He won't buy the card, he just bidded like crazy with no intention to buy - I think that's the best explanation. |

Title: Re: 3Dfx Related eBay Auctions - Discussion Post by Menkau_ra on 30.11.10 at 14:34:49
We need to check the bid history. Because to win your bid must be higher then the bid before for only $1. It means that somebody bid $1725 and this guy bid a dollar more - $1726.
What a crazy world. Lucky seller ;) |

Maybe two bidders wanted to be sure to get it so they overbid not expecting it to go as high as it did. I'm sure theres more than a few people that do that on this forum.
Good luck with the evalution box auction BTW, it will be interesting to see what it fetches. |

Hmm, true, but it happens time and time again, it's not a coincidence if one follows the who's who. They are probaby surprised it went that high, but it's not out of their reach I don't think. Thanks though, yea it will be interesting. :) |

Yes, there are a lot of rich people, but very few are insterested in old video cards, trust me. They are insterested in exotic cars, expensive watches, jewelry and stuff like that. Ah, one more thing - rich guys are usually very miserly (they spend the money with great care). But we are going really offtopic now - I STILL wait for huteputz's answer : did you get the money ? :D |

I'm curious. Being new to the scene and all, I hope you forgive me if I'm asking stupid questions. This is a shrink wrapped retail box of two Voodoo2's. £25 sounds to me like quite a good price for a package like this. Aren't those hard to come by? Is the 8MB version a lot worse than the 12MB version? Is there something with Guillemont branded cards in particular that would make this a bad buy? |

Runs like a dream! Like other 5500 4x cards it comes with 1.12 BIOS dated 7/21/2000. (no splash screen on startup however, which I read is normal)
What is the going rate for these little guys? Dumped the BIOS here - http://rottentreats.com/4x/V5_5500_4X_BIOS.BIN |

Well, you could trust me or not, but some of these don't necessarily have NFR sticker, although they are proto-cards ...or not. It depends by the story of the card. I would leave the card as is, since we can't really know what there was behind. |

If there is sticker residue it's kind of a dead giveaway there was one originally I would have thought. Often ebayers remove the stickers because they think they can't sell the card otherwise. I guess it's up to him. Very nice card nevertheless. :) |

Awesome card 8-) Only thing I would do for the moment is replacing the coil. Just use one from a dead V4/V5, the replacement itself is easy (if you know how to).

Ok, here is my story. /edited
I wanted to test the Rev.A0 5500 (pcb date 1500) in my V6K rig. Which has a Epox 8k3a+ motherboard in it. I tested a regular 5500 AGP last night and it worked fine. So I got home and plugged in the Rev.A0 but I did not get any display. So then I tried a non-3dfx PCI card and it worked fine. (ruling out any system issues) So I got out a spare 8K3A+ (pictured) Still no luck in the different motherboard with the Rev.A0. Computer booted fine with a non-3dfx PCI card and when I had the Rev.A0 plugged in as a "slave" it was not seen in windows. |
Title: Re: 3Dfx Related eBay Auctions - Discussion Post by Loeschzwerg on 06.04.13 at 10:20:13
Postcode 7F means that an error occured and the Bios is waiting for a keyboard input (like F1 for example). So the board initialized main functions (CPU, memory and most other things) but detected an error.
Try to boot with a different card as "main" display card and the Rev A0 as "slave". You could also use a AGP2PCI adapter with the Rev A0. Within Windows you could check if VSA100s are detected. If YES, chances are high you've got only a corrupt bios :) If NOT a hardware defect/problem is very likely. Regarding your 8k3a+ problem, check for the capacitors. If any of them are "belly" you know what to do ;) |
Title: Re: 3Dfx Related eBay Auctions - Discussion Post by rottentreats on 06.04.13 at 17:05:55
Looks like the card is dead. (a guy can only be so lucky) I guess I will never know if it worked or not, the guy said it was pulled from a working system but who knows with those recycling places that part out computers. The card is in EXCELLENT physical condition, has the cool rework and NFR stickers. I doubt my 8K3A+ killed the card...(as a regular 5500 AGP runs just fine in it, and my V6K runs great in it too)
Per our friend Hank Semenec: "Boot to DOS, then execute PCI.EXE. You should see several devices, the ones you are looking for are 121Ah (3dfx). If you see the device then your card is alive and just the BIOS is nuked. If you do not see the 3DFX signature, say good bye to the card." Tested in another spare 8K3A+ to just see if maybe it was a "quirk". (it is still a prototype) PCI.exe did not detect the card. Also tested on a Asus P3V 4X, also not detecting the card. So not I have to figure out what to do with the card.. either keep it as it is still a neat piece... or sell it as non functional. (unless there could be steps to try and fix it...) Unless there are some other steps I can try? |
Title: Re: 3Dfx Related eBay Auctions - Discussion Post by Loeschzwerg on 06.04.13 at 19:08:14
Well that's bad :( No I don't have any further idea. Have you also tested it with an AGP2PCI adapter?
If you want to get rid of it, let me know. |

I don't have a AGP2PCI adapter to test with.. but I did hook up a multimeter as suggested. Reads 2.18V at the low end and 2.42V at the high end. (I just left it hooked up for a few minutes and it varied) Pretty constant at 2.27V though.
I don't know if that is close enough to 2.8-3.0V.. so with that being said, anything else I can try or does that narrow down the issue? |
Title: Re: 3Dfx Related eBay Auctions - Discussion Post by Komponent on 07.04.13 at 14:18:18
Might be a multimeter issue, but to be sure pop in a working Voodoo5 and do the same measurement. If it reads arround 2.8V replace the voltage regulator on the proto card.
|
Title: Re: 3Dfx Related eBay Auctions - Discussion Post by rottentreats on 07.04.13 at 14:21:06
Just did that now. My functional 5500 AGP always reads 2.9V or more. Looks like I have a project on my hands :D
/edit - Just hooked up the Rev.A0 card again and it was only at 2.10V at the voltage regulator. (and the same at C37 and C66, which I was informed stores the supply voltage for the VSA100) |
Title: Re: 3Dfx Related eBay Auctions - Discussion Post by Komponent on 07.04.13 at 14:31:18
It did look like a power issue, but it still might be a different failure so keep us posted after you replace the voltage regulator with a proven working one. Good luck!

These findings do not make you clever, and this is not news to many people... (most everyone knows already that I got a great deal on these cards) :D 8-) I am selling these cards at a reasonable price. As you can see by my auction on eBay I am asking for a price below market value.
No matter what anyone thinks, There are pre-production prototypes. Anyone to argue that fact is simply just wrong. Look how many V56K's there are... probably just as many (if not less) V5 5500 AGP 4x cards. |

Don't really think so, 300€ is a lotta money for such common cards, even if the voodoo3 is a sealed box, those are so common they are not worth much.
I would probably pay 150 euros for that MAX, but that's just me |

some just have too much money to burn, unfortunately...no offense to anyone.

To be honest, I have no idea how much sealed box are selling for, but I thought it's a good purchase for someone... definitely not the best out there, but good enough. As there are 7 cards in total. But as I said I have no idea, since I have no even 1 boxed card in my collection...

Most I ever payed was 100€ for a boxed 5500PCI mac edition, cause I really wanted the dvi connector.
Box is in near mint condition, but don't really care for the box |

It's not a bad price (if you compare to the other offers for boxed 3dfx cards), but it's also not a good price, most boxes aren't in the best condition, plus those are the most common cards. And V3 2000 is offered twice (even if the box and maybe even the card0 is slighty different. And I think that the shippment will not be cheap... |

I was the seller, not going to pay that for a simple v4 PCI. |

i won a pair of 2x Voodoo2 12mb + SLI cable + drivers cd (Diamond Monster 3D II) and they seem to have a heatsink-fan attached to them.
Won them for 20$, + 13.35$ for shipping. My friend was a bit too late to grab them, so instead of keeping those, i'll resell them to him since he need those in his P3 800Mhz setup with 1gb SDRAM PC133 and GeforceFX 5200, he can't play his Glide games too well so he'll put those in this PC. (Quake 3 framerate is like 1fps without those cards) I got them for 20$ because the way he wrote his auction, he didn't put what peoples usually put in the search bar (3dfx Voodoo 12mb) but put something like "pair of Diamond Monster 3D II 12mb pci" instead. |

"Designed for V5 6000" and "Limited Edition", with a price that really match the V6000 users, which mean "rich bastards" ;D

I don't agree. 100 Euro is a fair price IMHO. If you can't afford it, you can always build yourself one AGP2PCIX adapter, at the price of 2 risers plus many hours of soldering. :o

Title: Re: 3Dfx Related eBay Auctions - Discussion Post by osckhar on 16.12.13 at 20:06:26
Well, it is not a rich matter... If cost for produce only a batch of 4 samples cost 325Euros + plus VAT, plus to add material needed and time soldering... 100Euros expensive? In Spain is not cheap to order PCBs.
Agree with komponent, you always can build your adapter yourself. - Oscar. |

well here in Canada/North America, electronics seem to be cheaper than anywhere else in the world, i don't know why. But something like this would very rarely sell here.

This merc system has a bad board, its also a Soft Reality system so the Q3D logo on the desktop would be incorrect. SF was bought out by Q3D in 2002. Might be fixable by swapping out a board or two if you have spares. |

Hi,
Here is a strange case form a Russia seller : a Voodoo3 1000 in a 2000 box. http://www.ebay.fr/itm/3dfx-Voodoo3-1000-graphics-card-16MB-AGP-BOX-/141251929820 On a french forum we think the box is a little weird : smaller than other Voodoo3 box, carton instead of plastic inside, and the cd drivers looks like to be a cd-r one. What do you think : is this a normal "special" Voodoo3 box for Russia, or just a scam ? |

Listing some retail boards as bundles. With more to come from 1998 until 2003 with lots of different retail cards.
More listings are live for different cards, however not all of them contain 3Dfx so not appropriate for this forum. http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/112150633507?ssPageName=STRK:MESELX:IT&_trksid=p3984.m1555.l2649 http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/112150618081?ssPageName=STRK:MESELX:IT&_trksid=p3984.m1555.l2649 http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/112150611375?ssPageName=STRK:MESELX:IT&_trksid=p3984.m1555.l2649 It's the last of the last of the retail collection, I really hope it will go to someone who will get more playing/testing/benching time out of them then I could ever get. Starting price might be higher then expected, however, I bought these individually ultimately for a higher price and would like to get out of it at least what I purchased them for. Selling them all individually would take ages and the organisation behind it would be too much to take on. I hope someone can enjoy these for years to come. :) |
