Also could you force the T-Buffer to act as an A-Buffer (Accumulation buffer), to make it more of a modern day feature that might get used by more games if implemented in this manner?

lol, the T-buffer is an accumulation buffer.

Possibly even add in an anisotrpoic filter, add in Gloss Mapping, re-implement a better working (non-buggy) HSR (Hidden Surface Removal). Along with Tessellation so the data sent accross the bus is kept to a minium. Maybe Texture Thrashing to give better peroformance?

I believe aqueoss was working on AF but he's ill atm. Also, HSR would be useless as the game manufactures would have to implement it in their game. The only game that it works (bearly) in is quake 3.

All that other stuff, you'd have to speak about it with hank. Hit em up over at 3dfxzone english boards.

But one thing that I'd like to see updated is a new icd. Opengl 1.2 support as well as a total work around with opengl.

To straighten things out here :

Hidden Surface Removal is performed to some extend by a variety of 3D Engines (but AFAIK only in a limited way, since HSR costs valuable Engine runtime as well).

When implemented, it needs to be effective enough to remove large amounts of unneeded Geometry, yet fast enough in order not to kill off the performance gained.

The 3dfx Driver HSR only worked with the Quake3 Engine as far as I remember, which indeed was making things alot (!) faster, but resulted in notable, upto severe display corruption, rendering is effectively unusable (felt like being an experimental, early Beta Stage).

If the Engine did not support HSR by the Driver, no effect was noted at all.

(e.g., run Quake3 with Aggressive settings to completely screw up the Display, then Unreal Tournament via OpenGL, and observe it having NIL effect).

And if you don't know Hank and his abilities....
...well... ::)
From what I've heard, he's a former 3dfx Engineer, created the latest Voodoo5-6000 Hardware Fixes, and to my best knowledge is the only person existing that is able to upgrade V5-6000 Boards to the latest Version or even repair damaged ones.

Without him, many of the existing, recent Reviews would have been impossible, and would have rendered the V5-6000's as partly/largely non-functional Prototypes they originally were.

Hank is likely indeed the man to talk to, when it comes to separating what might be possible in Software, and what would need to be fixed/modified in Hardware (out of reach for Software workarounds)

Well, I honestly don't believe he has alot of time at hands (and the time available is probably occupied by many others already).

If anyone around the AmigaMerlin team shows up at 3dfxzone.it, you probably have the best chances to get 'first hand' feedback on your Idea's...

Some basics (like effect of 3dfx Driver-HSR) however, used to be common knowledge not too long ago (?), so you won't need "special" people to give definitive answers on those (actually very old) Topics...

They might have more finetuned and detailled answers, but still, all of these questions have been answered before at some time. I'm certain if any of it can be realized in some form, we'll see it one day ;)

You know exactly what I meant about the whole HSR thing. Don't be a jackass cpdubal. And you dissed the whole opengl 1.2 thing to say that we need opengl 1.4. lol, we're still using the original opengl icd from 3dfx. It still hasn't been updated. SO you're dreaming if you looking for 1.4; and besides, if you looked at the whitepapers the vsa100 can only go up to 1.2.

And on the hank issue, that's a damn shame that you've never heard of him. You seem to know SOOOOOOOOO much about 3dfx and their tech, etc. But you fail to know who Hank is. Lets put it this way, Hank created the 6k, him and Scotty.

EDIT: cpdubal/Black_out, if you want some real opinions and answers, head over to x3dfx, and you'll probabaly get more of a response, since I need to do a little more research when it comes to video cards...

flaconfly: Well, do you have an links to the threads where it has been discussed before? I would like definately like to read them if so.  :)

I haven't really discussed these kinda things before because up 'till the recent year I had stuck in my 5500 and just happened to stumble accross this huge community I though died off in late 2000.

I bet you've talked about this stuff a billion times, but it is is pretty new on me. I mean I never in my wildest dreams thought that people would re-complie the source and make XP drivers (AmigaMerlin 2.x, 3.x mainly). Now 3Dfx is alive again. ;D

Honestly :
If much of this is new to you, please listen to people like Lecram and the others. They have been around in other Forums for a long time, and most of them remember those Discussions very well...

(which were all quite intense at times in the past already, so you'll find them (including myself) naturally confused when history repeats itself ;) )

Would you please like to show me where exactly I called you a "jackass"? I'd really love to see that...

I can't find things that you remove by modifing your post.

After this you get no more response from me this already is getting off topic I won't get into it with you.

One last thing, I have removed all my posts on this topic because I will not be apart of this.

Have a good day  :)

I really think you should lock and/or delete this. He started the thread. Now it just looks stupid with me at the top.  ::)
