Opinions for "new" p4 system w/5500 pci
15.12.03 at 02:37:27

Greetings all!

My 5500 pci has been patiently waiting to be put in an updated system and I have some time and some cash to finally put it back in service. I will be running Win98SE and I was wondering just how well the card will scale with a modern p4 processor...

Will the card be able to utilize say, a 2.8Ghz CPU or is anything over 2Ghz overkill?

Thank you for any well-reasoned opinions or experiences shared!

according to new hardware t&l games: the higher your cpu scales, the better performance you'll get. that's because the voodoo5 doesn't has hardware t&l support and so the cpu has to perform those effects..  8)

So how about this setup for Win98SE GLIDE gaming goodness:

Intel D865PERLL Mobo
Intel P4 2.8Ghz - 800FSB
My (underused) V5 5500 PCI
Kingston HyperX KHX3200AK2/512 512MB Kit DDR400 PC3200 Memory

already bought the setup? then it's worth a try..
elseway, if you didn't bought this setup yet, make sure agp2x is supported by the new mainboard.
beside i would claim you'd run better with win2k on such a system which evently - as i've seen it - runs glide games at the same range or faster than win98.  Smiley

The system has not been bought yet.  Since my V5 5500 is a PCI card, I don't have to worry about AGP compatibility. Thanks for the tip on Windows 2K. The board supports it and maybe I can find a copy and give it a try!

ah sure..sorry, just forgot that.   Wink
with win2k you should have higher compatibility to the actual pc improvements..know what i mean ..(win98 evently doesn't support firewire, usb 2.0 and the whole other stuff) Smiley get service pack 4 (released august 2003) for the maximum..if you like to, you can also try winxp+sp1, but i won't do, because it's always a little bit tricky as we're dealing here with a voodoo5.

Yeah, I agree with you about XP - that's why I figured I would stick with 98SE and stay away from Win2K core. I decided to leave some of the newer technologies behind (Hyper-Threading especially since Win9X won't support) for a "simple", very high-powered Win98SE box to enjoy my legacy glide games and if lucky, some of the newer Q3 apps such as Jedi Academy.

If I go XP (sometime when Longhorn appears probably), I have a pair of V2's ready (for SLI) to pair with a Radeon 9800 level card or better to try out! Grin

Thank you again for your thoughts!

of course win98se supports USB 2.0, firewire or USB keys

you have to install,  *cough*  A DRIVER!  Tongue

how frickin' hard is that

on the other hand I'm still waiting for amigamerlin 3.0

BTW : win2k "supports" hyper-threading, but badly; so you end up losing performance with it activated
this hyperthreading thing will only work properly on win XP and linux ..

yep, but no native support by win98. at least, you won't get 'full' usb/firewire performance with win98, so you stay better with win2k core in this respect. that's why i prefer win2k at all...even hyper threading problems should be cleaned out by sp4, but i didn't checked it so far.

@mcmd: here's the thread that should help:
