Title: My "new" 3DFX rig
Post by ultima on 16.04.08 at 15:37:22
Hey guys,

gonna start building my new 3DFX rig which I'll be using for some oldschool gaming like Diablo2, NFS3 and all that.

The components:

Case:    A-Open HQ-25 desktop case
Mobo:    MSI Pro266TD
CPU:      Dual P3 1.4Ghz Tualatins
RAM:      2 x 512MB PC2100
VIDEO:  3DFX Voodoo5 5500 64MB agp
Sound:  FM801 soundcard
HDD:     40GB ata100 7200rpm WD
Optical: LG 16x dvd-rom

I think I'll be using windows2000, as it does have dual cpu support, but not the graphic burdon that XP brings to 3DFX cards.

Pictures will be posted soon.

Bearing in mind that the newer Direct-X versions can't be used in Win2K.

You're limited to DX 5.0
(or apparently a hacked version of DX 8.0...but I've never actually found that one)

EDIT: AH! Sorry @ps47...mixed it up with NT4...LOL! ::)

Excellent reference ps47  :)

I too am finishing up buying the hardware for my 3dfx 'retro' gaming machine.... I was planning on installing Win98SE, as I never used WinME and have only heard bad things about it, especially when compared to Win98SE.

However, I see that WinME supports up to the most recent release of DirectX, whereas Win98SE only supports upto the first DX9.0c release....

What is your opinion on the best Windows operating system for running games in DOS & Win95/98 generation Glide games?

I went ahead and made a dualboot.

I skipped the discs from setting them up on raid 0, as I'm sure windows98SE doesn't support raid. :)

So, dualbooting 98SE and XP now, so that'll be ok.

Installed Diablo2 last night, runs like a charm ofcourse, gonna install Rogue Squadron as well.
For the life of me I can't find Carmageddon2 anywhere. :(

Anymore nice Glide games?? I know there are, but can someone name a few so I can choose?? :) Thanks

Hey Ultima

My favourite Glide games are: Descent 1, 2 & 3, Unreal Tournament, Quake 1, 2 & 3, Whiplash and GLDoom.

here's a good list too: http://www.3dfxzone.it/enboard/topic.asp?TOPIC_ID=1758

yeah, forgot to mention the UT original, play that all the time,
still like that way better then any newer UT.

I have lotsa games that support Glide, but those are kinda boring.

I will stick to the major games I guess.

Major bummer tho, all my Diablo 2 accounts were gone, all my stuff was gone, been offline too long. :(

Had very nice stuff, ubertristram thingies, those +3 skills and all that charm thingie for all my chars, lvl 89 blizzard sorc with uberdamage. :(

Now I have 1 character, cold sorc, and found a gull, so MF is now @ 165%, so at least getting somewhere. :)

@paulpsomiadis if you want DirectX8.1 on your NT4.0 search for the file
DX81NTeng.exe it's not a hacked version it's official release from MS i think.

well i don't remeber where i downloaded the file from but it works.
I have a test rig with NT4.0 SP6 among other OS used to test video cards and it runs smoothly with dx8.1nt

LOL! ;D

So it's the fault of M$ website why people don't know about DX 8.1 in NT 4.0... ::)

I tried loading DX 8 on my NT rig once, if I remember right the video was locked at DX3 and sound was bumped to DX5.

I'll have to double check though.

you might be right didn't check to see on what version it really runs also because mostly i use NT4.0 to test the functionality of OpenGL cards using Specviewperf6.
