dial up internet connection/slower than normal
11.04.13 at 08:10:12

I've been noticing lately that sometimes my dial  up connection slows way down, I mean WAAAAY down, like say if I am downloading something, it might be bouncing around from 3.6k - 5.7k a second then a few minutes later it'll drop to 0.7k a second, and stays there for a good long while at times, as if something is running in the background sapping what little bandwidth I have.  I know it isn't the usual suspects, as I always to try to nip my AV updates in the bud until I choose to update them, and I usually try to do the same to updates of ADBLOCK Plus.  In addition it isn't some other suspects like my DivX program updating or GoogleToolbar updater or other similar stuff that starts up with the PC, I go through running processes before I log on to the net, and shut those down.

So, my question is, is there a program out there, a free one would be nice, also not a huge download as well would be ideal, as like I said dial up net, but is there a program that can tell me what running programs are using what amount of my bandwidth?

Don't know if it will tell you actual band width, but Win Patrol is pretty good program that gives you list of services running, startup programs, delayed start up, what's running in the background at the time and it's a very small program, 2/3 megs I think.

Once you make the connection to the net you can run the netstat command which may give you some ideas on what's trying to reach out to the net in the background and taking up bandwidth as well. Worth a shot I guess.

Still having issues.  Nothing I can see in that program shows me anything evident using bandwidth when it shouldn't be.  It's odd too, because the activity monitor for my connection in the taskbar might say I am connected at 44k or 45.2 or whatever, and if I watch the numbers, they match, I can watch it change in appropriate amounts.  Only other thing I can think of is a virus/worm/torjan that saps internet connections.  Any ideas?  I do  use antivirus, AVG Free.  It's actually pretty decent and hasn't found a darn thing so far.  I also have Avast, but I don't use it much as it is slow on my pc; when I use it, I install it, run a complete scan, then uninstall.

You can try downloading CCleaner and Malwarebytes and run those. CCleaner will remove all your temp, internet temp among other utilities, it's about 3/5 megs I think and Malwarebytes will do a search for malware on the system. I've it where the AV won't detect something until Malwarebytes does it's scan, finds something, and then that triggers the AV. You can also try using Microsoft's Security Essentials. I've been pretty impressed with it so far and that's free as well. These are all fairly small programs but the updates to them once installed may take a while. If you have access to a coffee shop or some other high speed connection someplace, bring a USB stick there and download them there or a friends and install afterwards. Maybe run netstat in a command window once you get connected and see what's trying to get out on the back end of things. Not sure what else to tell you to try. Hopefully some of these will help.
