Title: 3Dfx "rebirth" ?!
Post by dlc on 20.12.04 at 02:40:57
I heared this and I just could'nt belive it.
You may allready heared, but... nVidia is made a GeForce 6600GT card that will have a ability to make a SLI (!!!) connection with another 6600GT card!!

Well, it looks to me - that 3Dfx will rize again! :)

p.s. Enyone heared if it have ANY connection with Voodoo technology. Is it based (in any way) at those Voodoo projects that never were produced!?

No connection to the 3dfx design which did every other scan line. From what I understand Nvidia did NOT get the patent on 3dfx style SLI.

Nvidia is just stealing the name.

NV's SLI is kind of old news. I like it but it's not Scan Line Interleave it's Scalable Link Interface. I wouldn't mind having a rig but from what I've seen so far the motherboards are only 8X cap. in each slot if your using both PCI express slots. It's still great, but I know my luck the day I buy it they'll have 16X going in both slots the very next month and I be ticked off for not waiting.

NVIDIA® SLI™ (Scalable Link Interface) technology is a revolutionary approach to scalability and increased performance. NVIDIA SLI takes advantage of the increased bandwidth of the PCI Express™ bus architecture, and features hardware and software innovations within NVIDIA GPUs (graphics processing units) and NVIDIA nForce4 MCPs (media and communications processors). Together the NVIDIA SLI patent-pending technologies work seamlessly to deliver heart-pounding PC performance. And depending on the application, NVIDIA SLI can deliver as much as 2x the performance of a single GPU configuration for unparalleled gaming experiences.

Hehe, just give me a time to get to my FTP-client tomorrow... I have funny picture of one of my current PCs...
Athlon FX-55@3.3GHz/Mach II GT cooled/ASUS A8N-SLI/dual ASUS GeForce 6600GT PCI-E in SLI mode + two Voodoo II 12MB PCI in SLI mode too ;) That's 4-way SLI we always dreamed about;)

I personally really love multi-GPU setups, so existence of nV SLI is a music to my ears ;) A pity that I can't get dual 6800 Ultra PCI-E and beat a few 3dmark records - there isn't a single 6800 PCI-E card in Ukraine even as press samples... :(
But I welcome the concept greately. I had Rage MAXX in 2000 and there is also one in my collection today, last year we'd a lot of fun with Volari Duo V8 Ultra sample (sold it for $430 and still blame myself for that - money come and go while hardware remains;))... Multi GPU is excellent hi-end solution that will change the shape of contemporary 3d gfx market deepely, almost doubling the power of most potent graphics adapters right now!

Well I gotta say that's nice but the only real Sli is 3dfx SLi, nVidia stole the name from 3dfx,  nVidia could of been bright enough by calling something else like  really like NLT aka Nvidia Linked Technology instead of coppying 3dfx'
letter's SLi

The real SLi is Scan Line Interleave and no other discription needed and the there is only one card that has real 4-Way SLi, that the ledgendary Voodoo5 6000 ;)

If I'm not mistaken, Quantum3D owns that technology. I know my Mercury sub-system is 8-Way SLI and the Almighty AAchemey is up to what, 32-Way or so I've read.

I think I could appreciate playing Doom3 at the Ultra Graphics setting. I tried that on my 256 9800 AIW and I got a warning that stated that I need 500 MB of texture memory. It looks like ALT-F13 has the necessary memory to kick it up to the "Ultra" setting. Screenshots please ;D

It must be nice to have that kind of raw power. Maybe this Spring ;)

@gamma742
Basically you can play Doom 3 at Ultra settings with any other videocard (even Radeon 9600 or FX5200) the problem with 500MB+ texture size is that you'll get more swaps than on High settings if you don't have 512 video RAM.

Unfortunately, my current setup, as stated above is dual 6600GT and they are 128 MB each... So only 256 MB overall.
I saw benchmarks on dual 6800U though. It really shows nice boost in Ultra mode in comparation with other solutions...

@Obi-Wan_Kenobi
LMAO... That was a joke about 4-way SLI, dude... :) And my personal opinion that it's OK to use SLI name for multi-GPU setups: brand is still pretty recognizable and idea of technology is almost the same. Who cares about particular method of GPU co-work - single line, half screen or frame to frame?

@ OBi-wan
Because you can run Glide with your card (6800GT)
You can sure say there must be 3dfx technology in it.

You can run anything with a wrapper.

Glide is low level programming that access the 3dfx hardware direct if I remember correct, that is why a lot of glide games were so fast as there was very little overhead.

Somehow I don't think that's going on with a Nvidia product utilizing glide.

Of course any game that uses glide is hardly a stress for todays hardware.

Yup, what he said.

Then I have a question , it's pretty stait foreward hehe,

Is 32Bit Glide a possibility or a reallity?

I would to to add the Motion Blur to the original QuakeIIIArena, if someone has an idea, I'd llike to know how I should get it working :) BTW the Motion Blur Q3 demo also works on my GeForce6800GT 256, hehe that card also has Motion Blur, but it didn't work on my 9700 Pro, is that strange?
