Title: DOS drivers needed
Post by djkoelkast on 19.02.07 at 14:37:07
Hi all,

I have a dedicated DOS machine with no Windows running on it whatsoever. It runs DOS 6.22 and has a VooDoo Banshee 16mb AGP.

I'd like to play games like Carmageddon with 3dfx support but it misses a .dll-file, this is because the DOS drivers aren't loaded.
Where can I find the DOS drivers for this voodoo?

Thanks in advance!

A DLL file is a Windows file.

When playing games in Windows, those games use drivers (DLL files) to access all the functions of the hardware.

When playing in DOS however, the game must access these functions on it's own. The only way to play a Glide game under DOS is when it's natively supported by that game.

Carmageddon has 3dfx DOS support but it needs drivers, have a look at this:

Quote:
Common Problems and Fixes:

Problem: Error Unable to load DLL.
Solution: This error will occur if you don't have a 3Dfx video card when running the 3Dfx version, or you are not using GLIDE version 2.4.2. Update the GLIDE drivers for your 3Dfx video card.

and yes this IS for the DOS version, actually it loads DOS4GW first and after that gives the error.

I haven't used a pure DOS box in a LONG time but if I remember right, isn't the glide file for DOS a .OVL file (this is just an example glide2x.ovl v2.4)? Like I said, I'm not comepletely sure, that file might be part of any windows installation, but i thought that was what was needed in order to play a game under does.

Maybe find that file and put it in the games directory? No idea if this will help or not.

Oh, ps, the link you sent isn't working.

Is it just me, or aren't the DOS drivers part of the driver install for each and every 3Dfx card...???

@djkoelkast - as long as you have installed the card in windows, look in the folder where you extracted the Voodoo Banshee drivers... ;)

The GLIDE2X.OVL should be there somewhere...maybe? ???

I don't have Windows installed ;)
But I found a solution:

downloaded 3dfx Win95 drivers, transferred glide2x.ovl and glide2x.dll to the carmageddon folder and started with: carmav -hires -novoodoo

Must be -novoodoo because otherwise it compains there is no voodoo (but there is... maybe because it's a banshee AGP?)

umm...are you SURE it's using GLiDE? ???

-novoodoo disables the voodoo support entirely! :o

(at least that's what the syntax suggests...) ::)

no I'm not sure but it does look better than just carma -hires
It maybe that it not tries to DETECT the voodoo, I don't know.

At the same page I gave before (which doesn't work anymore?) this option is there. I don't have the splat pack though.

Try this google cache link: http://216.239.59.104/search?q=cache:tgfpItaSfqwJ:www.interplay.com/support/product.asp%3FGameID%3D87+carmav+novoodoo&hl=nl&ct=clnk&cd=1&gl=nl

When I start without the -novoodoo it doesn't work at all with voodoo2 or banshee versions of glide, it gives a voodoo not detected with voodoo1 glide. It does seem to start with the 2/banshee version but the screen remains blank. No 3dfx logo whatsoever.

Is it possible the voodoo banshee is not that DOS-friendly?

For MS-DOS you need the .OVL files (as said). I don't know if more files are neccesary, if you want to be sure just extract all files.

The files can be extracted from the Win9x drivers. In case of a Voodoo Graphics just extract the Voodoo Graphics drivers, in case of a Voodoo II the Voodoo II drivers, and so on :).

The path-environment will probably work here too. That means you put the drivers in some directory (i.e. C:\DOS>) and set that path to that directory. Just write path=C:\dos and it will work. If you have other path-environments you have to include them as well. Then it'll be path=c:\;c:\dos;c:\sbpro;c:\windows etc. :)
