Title: F1RS Voodoo 2 restarting PC?!?!
Post by Quaker763 on 08.08.11 at 10:41:56
Hi, as you may not know, i bought my V2 3.0 to play one game in particular, Ubisoft's F1 Racing Simulation. I managed to track the game down at Gametraders (HOORAY! :D) and then got a V2 because it looks much better in glide. After some trouble getting it working, (and some help from ps47, thanks bro) and he reccomended the Voodoo2 V3.03.00b DirectX 7 Beta driver and all was well, i could play Quake 1 and that was about it. Well it was all i tested. I was ecstatic when the game detected my voodoo and installed the game. I launched it and... My bios screen showed up. The PC had rebooted!  :'(

Now if im not mistaken, this game was made for the voodoo 1 (1996) and im not sure if its a compatibilty issue. Im using an AMD Athlon XP and my V2 is hooked into a GeForce 2 MX.

Could someone suggest something to fix this (as its the reason i bought the V2 lol )

Make sure you are patched:

ftp://ftp.ubisoft.com/F1Racing/

Sorry it took a while to get back, I had to hook up my V2 machine again.

Tried all of that (including ALL the patches on EACH type of install small, medium, large) and it's still reboting. I even tried limiting the memory to 2MB per TMU making it an 8MB v2 instead of a 12MB. May I also note that I am using an AthlonXP processor (its a 99 or 2000 mobo so dont worry about my V2 frying) and the setup is detecting a Pentium CPU.  Hope We can resolve this problem  ;D ;D

In order to find out the problem, you should try other different things. Running the same game and the same configuration over and over will give us little or no info:

- F1RS also supports D3D. Try the D3D renderer with both the Voodoo2 and the primary display device.

- Try the Glide renderer with a Glide wrapper.

- Play more games. Other Ubisoft titles with a very similar technology are POD and Rayman 2.

- Also try to install this update to the game folder (ignore the recommended folder): ftp://ftp.ubisoft.com/PodUpgrade/glide.exe

Then post here some feedback about your progress.

Yes. I have tried the game in a Glide wrapper ages ago (before I got the Voodoo 2) and it gave me a unhandled exception error (in Windows XP). I also dont have any other Ubisoft Glide games, but I do have NFS3, Quake 1, 2 and V-rally.

I do the D3D test later on when I have time

Ok. Here are the results from the D3D version of F1RS... Theyre not good  :( :(

First off, I tried D3D WITH the voodoo (and the 1.09 patch) and got a "There is no 3D present'. So I shut off windows 98, hooked the monitor into the Geforce 2 and rebooted. I got a "There is no 3D present" AGAIN. So i did an uninstall and reinstall and got the same message.
So I physically took the voodoo out of the machine and got the no 3D present error.

Great, more problems  >:( >:(

Also, Im using a V2 Dx7 Driver and the game was made for Dx5, It's probably not a problem but

Run dxdiag with both Voodoo2 and GeForce2 installed and check that both cards are properly detected and have DirectDraw/Direct3D acceleration enabled under "Display 1" and "Display 2" tabs. Also run DirectDraw and Direct3D tests on both tabs. If any of these features is disabled or unavailable, then you must have a problem with your setup.

And by the way, you don't need to detach and reattach any cable to change the active D3D device, nor you have to uninstall the Voodoo2 to use the GeForce2. Voodoo2 is an add-on card, not a replacement. Just go to Control Panel -> Display -> 3dfx V2-1000 tab (or whatever it is called in your setup), and there you can enable/disable D3D on your V2.

Again, if this tab is unavailable, you must have a serious problem. Go to Control Panel -> System -> Device Manager and check that Voodoo2 is present under "Sound, Video and Game Controllers", without either a yellow interrogation (detected but uninstalled), a yellow exclamation (installed but not working) or a red cross (installed but disabled).

Ok ok ok. Good news and bad news

The good news is... I changed to the Latest Ref. Driver (DX 7) and the card ran in DX and in Glide(V-Rally)

Bad news... I was installing NFS3 and i accidentally reset the PC as it was doing nothing just as the setup program loaded. The PC hung on reboot. So i reinstalled 98 and installed the drivers and it hung on reboot. New PCI slot, hung on reboot then Fatal Exception OR at 0167:BFF99b42

I dont THINK (not saying its not) the card's f*cked or i may be using the wrong drivers. OH and heres the list of what i installed

1. nVidia Foreware drivers
2. DirectX 7a
3.Voodoo 2 DX7 Drivers

Up until it hung i was getting it to run in DX and it was detected in DXDiag

HALPS PLZ!!  :'( :'( :'( :'(

EDIT: I reckon its a driver problem... Quoting ps47 on the help he gave me

Quote:
install either directx7 or directx8.1,newer releases can cause instability.

I think i'll try DX 8.1 with these drivers, and if that screws up im going for a DX 6.1 driver, as thats what 98 ship with (according to DXDiag)

EDIT 2: Ok no more lockups or hangs, but now V-Rally gives me a BSOD when dx version is launched and an illegal operation in Glide mode. (With the DX 6.1 driver)

EDIT 3: I think i'll try the DX 7 beta driver first with DX 7.0a before i use the 3rd party driver as im not too keen on using them

If you really think it's a driver problem, you should first try the Athlon-compatible driver, as your CPU is an Athlon XP: http://www.falconfly.de/downloads/athlon-voodoo2.zip

If that doesn't fix the problems, then it's time to try the card in another system with different CPU and chipset. If instability persists, there are high chances of the card being damaged.

@Allstar
Not in Vista, nor in XP or 7, but yes in windows 98. Win 98 is very sensitive about what version of DirectX is installed. I also keep version 8.1 installed and use the good old 3dhq driver; sometimes amigamerlin.

I would recommend the thread starter to completely remove all unnecessary cards (voodoo inclusive), format the hard drive and install the system in exactly this order:

1) Setup windows 98
2) Update windows 98 with new internet explorer and add the critical updates with autopatcher (nice little update program)
3) Update DirectX to 8.1
============
Now install drivers:
4) Mainboard drivers (if you have VIA chipset, VIA 4in1 is a *must*, preferably the 'retro' one)
5) Main display drivers  + monitor driver / forceware or whatever
============
Now plug in additional cards (soundcard, network, voodoo etc) and install them one by one
6) install a card
7) load windows & install drivers
8) restart computer, shut down after successful driver initialization and goto step 6)

If you do it this way and you still get errors - then something is wrong with the hardware. Good luck! ;)

Thanks for the tips!!!

I might get around to trying this later on today. I currently dont think its a hardware problem as I have played GLquake with the card. I didnt think about installing any MB drivers, so thanks for letting me know about it.

1 Question, if i use DX 8.1, do i need V2 DX8.1 drivers, or can I get away with using a DX 7 one?

Thank you all for the help,

-Quaker762

It shouldnt be a problem. Mainly because V2 is meant to use glide and not DX. It might be problematic if you intend to use V2 as a DX device (I would strongly recommend against doing this)
