Looks like Dell wants a bigger piece of the market.

hmm they didn't buy Alienware yet, Dell only has that as planned, but I doubt that Alienware would agree on that since they sell systems with AMD CPU's also that is something Dell would never do.

No, it's confirmed. Done deal.
And apparently they'll still use AMD CPUs for Alienware-branded systems. Not sure how that will work, but hopefully it means that Dell is going to be very hands-off and not try to reorganize everything.
If they just take advantage of Dell's volume to get components cheaper and remian mostly autonomous with respect to manufacturing and customer support, I think both companies stand to gain.
Dell could easily screw it up and ruin the brand, though. Hell, the publicity alone is going to hurt Alienware a bit off the start.
We'll just have to wait and see.

Hm...
Personally, I never liked AlienWare products alot. Good performance but too "wannabe cool" Design, overpriced.
I prefer decent, straight and calm designs outside, while delivering high-end performance coming from the inside.

I agree with you FalconFly, I generally build my own systems because it's cheaper, I'm getting exactly what I want and I love messing with them. I do wondering what kind of impact, if any, that this will have for the general public. With Gateway buying out E-machines (not really a big thing there) and Compaq and HP merging and now with Dell doing this, just kind of wondering where we're headed.

well I meant thei Laptops for LAN parties not the PC"s them selves, they are too pimped I totally agree with that too, instead I rather have a nice LianLi or AddTronnics case and make my own creation on it like a painting of a PyroGX from Descent2 or a nice Tyrannosaurus Rex from Jurassic Park
hehe
