If anyone knows how to fix/disable these issues please let me know.

1)  I would like to disable the pop ups from the tray that requests that I remove unused icons from my desktop and any and all other tray pop ups for that matter.

2) I got rid of that stupid dog that would show up when ever I ran "Search" but how can I just run a simple search/find without and the XP crap. I just want to click search/find and type in the file name I'm after.

I know Microsoft is trying to make things easier but now there are several steps to do a simple search.



Does anyone else have any complaints or fixes for these??

Or try one of the bigger Reg-Tweakers. Maybe those settings can be controlled from the Registry, so such a tool would help you get rid of them.

Download TweakUI (it's a tool directly from Microsoft), install it, start it and go to the "Taskbar and Start Menu"-section. Uncheck the box "Enable balloon tips" and you are free. ;)
The downside is if you want to have that balloon tips in case of being notified of other events (e.g. when you remove an USB-stick or something via the tray icon "remove hardware") you don't get them as well.

That can be found in TweakUI, too: section "Explorer", in the list on the right check the boxes in front of "Use Classic Search in Explorer" ad "Use Classic Search in Internet Explorer".

In principle you could go into the registry and change some keys, too, but TweakUI is very powerful and you can't destroy anything, which you can clearly when you mess around in the registry. ;)

I prefer Win2K pro + SP4 & Win98SE + UO SP2.03  all the way, those OSés are the best for Voodoo use, XP is okay with newer hardware though :) Like radeon X850's, X1900's, or GeForce 6800's or 7900 GTXés hehe

If you are using XP Pro, there's a whole HERD of settings you can configure using the Group Policy Editor.

It's a MMC snap-in, and the simplest way to access it is Start -> Run -> "gpedit.msc".

To my knowledge it can do anything that TweakUI can, except change Windows Explorer image thumbnail settings (if you have the shimgvw.dll component enabled).  I particularly like the powerful utility for hiding Control Panel applets -- it's MUCH more useful than the one in TweakUI.

GPE is the single greatest reason to use XP Pro instead of XP Home.

yeah i`m planning to euthanise xp soon

after getting my old system running on 2k sp4 with a 2000+xp , i benched it against a 3.2xp both with a 9800pro and came to the obvious conclusion
that my xp system is chewing more resources
then necessary!

and considering i use to run 2k on a p2 300 / amd k6 400 / 1.6xp , the 3.2 xp should give 2k a good kick!

I turned on "logon" "Auto Logon" and clicked the "Set Password" button, typed it in and typed it in again to confirmed and now I'm not bothered by the welcome screen ;)

Control Panel -> Users -> Change type of login (or something like that, I have a german XP here ;) ) -> Uncheck the box in front of "Use Welcome Screen"
Then you have the "classic" logon screen where you have to type in username and password.

If you want to autologon then you can do it with TweakUI, too, as gamma742 already stated. ;)

Has anyone ever lost the neat little icons from your favorites list. I mean like FalconFly has a white and gray 3dfx logo. I noticed that all my favorites lost their icons, now they're back to the standard "e" internet explorer icon >:(

I deleted the shortcut and saved a new one and got the 3dfx icon back. I would hate to have to do this for all of my "Favorites" shortcuts, what a pain in the butt!!

Those icons are stored in your browser's cache.  Whenever it gets wiped or overwritten, they get nuked until the next time you visit that site (you shouldn't have to re-bookmark it, just go there once).

If your browser is set to clear the cache every so often (I set mine to clear on every exit), or you have a script to clear it on shutdown, etc, the icons will keep getting nuked each time.



P.S.  Try Firefox.  ;)

I went to falconfly.de several times and rebooted as well hoping that it would come back on it's own. No go. so I re-bookmarked it and that seemed to work. Same with ImageShack.us :-/

Hmmm...  that's kind of odd.

Here's a link that might be helpful for IE specifically.  There's a section near the bottom of the page labelled "Favicons are Missing" that has a couple of suggestions (an application that can fix it, and a manual alternative that's probably preferable).

Good tip.

I think I'll use their workaround method. It's permanent and manual both of which I prefer. I don't add favorite very often and do like to dump the temp internet file from time to time.
