Title: Voodoo5 4ns memory mod
Post by m14radu on 29.06.13 at 08:04:29
I proudly present my new baby :)
It's a voodoo5 with 4ns memories, swapped from a GF2 asus v7100 pro.

Many thanks to Komponent for this amazing mod !

The card in her glory !

The original cooling is very weak.
With it max overclocking was 192Mhz. Target was at least 200Mhz :)

The next step was to change the coolers with other ones, bigger.

Notice the black higher coolers.

The results were unfortunately the same...max 192Mhz.

Next step: removing the heatsink !
Card was cooled down in the fridge and heatsink were carefully removed. A lot of emotion in this moment  :D

I found a lot of nasty paste....

My aluminum cooler :)

Also with 2x80mm fans no better results were achieved  >:(
Max Overclocking was 193Mhz.

The voltage was set from 2.8V to 3.2V - no change !!!

The card gets very hot, so that a proper cooling is very important !
Below the errors I get ( horizontal lines ):

The next planned step is to use 2 cooper coolers with arctic silver 5 paste :)
For the rear of the card, I want also to attach a heatsink. Any recommendation for the front and back coolers ?
How far can I go with the voltage rising ? Up to 3.3 V ?

Fell free to comment the project.
Any idea are welcome :)

The same card before having it shipped to M14Radu, after completing the modding and testing it at 2.9V and 185Mhz.

I like the looks of the big aluminum heatsink  ;)
Still hopping that with the improved cooling the 200Mhz mark could be crossed so all the work invested in modding the card will pay off...

Hehe, I added the cooper cooling.
more pictures later :)

The card is stable with only 2.4V  ::)
I check 4xAA, 2XAA everything is fine, card runs cooler.
Of course, no more than 180Mhz is possible :)

Very odd since my V5 MAC DVI it worked upper 198Mhz stock cooled with 4ns with normal stock voltage.

Anyway very good work Komponent! Very clean work.

Radu, very nice aluminium heatsink. I wish you can reach 200MHz.

Regards,
Oscar.

Thanks Osckhar !

It seems that I choose not the best overclockable voodoo.

Modding is finish !

I manage to mount the cooper coolers.
With this cooper coolers the card could be pushed to 195Mhz. Even if the voltage was rised up to 3.3V, 196Mhz were not possible.

Now was time to improve the cooling on the back of the card.
The area behind the VSA get very hot.
On the back of the card I mount those tiny heatshink.

And, yes ! I reach 200Mhz stable !
:D :D :D
Voltage must be 3.26V to run stable.

199Mhz are stable with 3.17V.
201Mhz was no stable even if I rise the voltage to 3.3V.

How about some benchmarks? 166 vs 200 Mhz?
Great job tweaking the card!

Here are some benchmakrs results:
CPU was running @2.3Ghz.

@166Mhz:

@200Mhz:

How far can you take that xp-m of yours?? I have an xp-m3000+ which defaults at 2.2Ghz and I've gotten it to 2.6Ghz stable so far. That was on aircooling as well.

Nice tweaking of the card ofcourse, maybe if you slap on 320 chips you can go even further with this kinda tweaking?!

@Osckhar: You reach 198Mhz with the 330 Rev ? Or 220 Rev ?

@ultima: I used for this tests a ECS K7VTA3 board.
I know, is not the best but its the board setup for my v56k.
( dunno why my v56k is not working in the Epox boards but only in the ECS and MSI boards..thats anger me a lot ).

I have here a Epox 8K5A2 and a MSI KT3 ultra, ready to rock and roll :)

The CPU has gone in the past up to 2.6Ghz, on the Epox board.
Im installing now a fresh XP on the MSI board, with the XP 2600 Mobile.

I am working on an improved cooling solution too, for the back of the VSA-s.

Ill keep you informed my friends !

As Gary sad: Lots of iron in the fire :)

Hi Radu,

With original vsa-100.

The only V5 with 4ns and vsa-100 last revision is own by Michel but it has some problems in the second vsa-100. I would need to check where the pronlems comes since I did not it the rework.

Regards,
Oscar.

With Help of Komponent and G1nx  a second card was moded.
Thanks guys !

This time a overclockable voodoo5 was used, witch runs stable before modding @198Mhz.
No more 4ns memory were found, so that i use 4.8ns memories.

The top one is the second :)

I swap the cooling from the first card, and here it is :)

( the date from the picture is wrong )

The card runs 200Mhz @3.0V.

204Mhz @3.2V:

205Mhz @3.3V:

206Mhz @3.3V:

Today @3.3V the card run @207Mhz, with open window to cool down the VSA 's cips.
The next step will be to improve the back cooling of the VSA's  by using small cooper plates.
If you have ideas for a better cooling I'll appreciate :)

I had a couple of free hours today so I modded another Voodoo 5 5500 AGP card with 4ns RAM and voltmod, this time for Masterj85.

http://abload.de/thumb/280920139cspj.jpg http://abload.de/thumb/28092013001nfs9t.jpg

Tested with 166Mhz and overclocked to 190Mhz at 3.2V. At this voltage 3DMark2001 freezes at random point at 195Mhz, but that was expected as the card needs far better cooling than I have available and at least back heatsinks to go to 200Mhz or above...

Hopefully Masterj85 will post the results he will get after receiving the card.

Great work Komponent !

@Masterj85: Please let us know mate, what the card is capable to :)
I cross my finger to reach 210Mhz :)
