Lagging problems
06.12.09 at 20:26:23

Hello all. I am new here Smiley

First thing first. I made a 90s gaming PC the specifications include:

Windows 98SE
DirectX 8.1
OpenGL 1.1
AMD K6-2 500Mhz
TI5VG+ Motherboard
128MB of SDRAM
Voodoo 3 2000 PCI
3Com 3c905-TX (PCI)
Creative Sound Blaster AWE64 Gold (ISA)

Now, games such as Quake 1 and 2, lego racers, POD, Sub Culture, Freespace 2. Run perfectly and very smoothly with opengl mode. Ultimate race pro and such very nice. Destruction derby 2 and monster trucks and general SVGA games run well.

However the problem is when it comes to direct3d games (and a few ogl) such as Midtown Madness, need for speed porsche, re-volt, Army men, desperados, lego racer2, lego creator, quake 3 (30fps av) run terrible terrible terrible!!!
Havent tried Grim Fandango..

I can feel that it is graphics lag, but i dont know for what reason, is it possibly driver problem??

I have 1.07 standard drivers and i am very annoyed for what the reason for such a problem is.

If there is anything that can help me i would be greatly appreciated!

I used to have a Pentium MMX 233 MHz machine that hit a wall similar to the one you describe.  I had an AWE 64 Gold ISA card that proved to be the culprit.  It turns out that this particular sound card provides good support for games up through DirectX 5, but as soon as you try to run a DirectX 6 game such as Microsoft Combat Flight Simulator, it stutters horribly.

Install a PCI sound card rather than the AWE 64 Gold, and see if that helps.

the cpu is slow-don't expect that games like quake3 will run smoothly (but you can try wickedgl anyway, see links in my signature).as for the d3d games, you can try installing the dx8 beta driver,it should give you a boost in d3d compatibility (again, see my sig)..

+1 : Indeed, that cpu is slow for q3, k6-2 500 was ok for it's time, but v3 is really screming for more, I remember playing quake3 on a voodoo2 and athlon900 - smoooooth Smiley Later, I made a retro computer - P2-400 + the same V2 - much slower, performance of a single V2, and remember V2 is a a little slower than V3 and P2 400 is faster tha K6-2, so it's simple - really - upgrade to something like P3-1000 or Athlon 1000 or above Smiley

i dont mind not running quake 3 since its qutie nice on my gts260 system.

If i upgraded processor i fear i would loose the compatability with games such as destruction derby and monster trucks in particular. Mosnter trucks is already running too fast. A faster processor would stop it working all together

If the motherboard can handle it try to get a K6-2+ or  K6-III cpu, compatibility should not be an issue.

K6-2 has no onchip level 2 cache, that's why it's terribly slow.

Check for IRQ conflicts, you have quite a few cards there. Also, can the motherboard handle properly 128 MB ? Some older motherboards have problems when you are using more than 64 MB of ram, I don't think it's your case, the problems appears mostly with older EDO chipset, but you never know. Try with 64 mb if you can, then with 256, if you have.

Do not under-estimate L2 Cache, it is very important for performance.

You can not say the processor is not at fault here untill you have actually tried a processor with L2 cache. If there's still stuttering, the processor is not the problem.

Nitro, the level of cache i have current is fast enough, too fast for some of the games

I should have got an agp supported board and just put my radeon ve in.
:|

I dont have any edo ram about nor lower than 128mb sticks around but thanks for the try raver:)

Nobody asks you to accept the fact that K6-2/3 is just far too slow for any of those (just a little bit newer) games that you mentioned, but you can check for yourself. Use fraps to track the scalability of FPS when you increase the resolution. If you get same (or similar) FPS at 640x480 and at 1024x768 - then its not video cards fault.

You will notice that its not the card, nor the driver - its the CPU that lags like hell. If you want to play those other games you mention - get another rig.

well.

what fastest p2 or amd k6-2??? I belive at the time k6-2 was more for the money. And i definately did not have a k6-3 or p3 at the time (1998-9).
I do remember though that i had an ATI Rage 128 Pro and the PC ran the games i have indicated fine... :| All i can say is, if this CPU i have now runs games too fast and yet is too slow to run those games (according to you) then what must i have had? a p2?

Hello all,

Sorry I misunderstanded you all! I am gratefully sorry for not accepting my problem. I did a test you see..

I plugged my voodoo 3 2000 PCI into an Athlon 1700+ (1.1Ghz) system and the voodoo 3 outperformed the GeForce FX 5500 AGP which was in there for Midtown Madness!! I could feel it.

I also found out something about the computer specifications of which i though would be alot older (something like my specs above) but was actually a:

AMD Duron - Inconclusive speed - Maybe 700Mhz
ECS K7S5A Mainboard- I thought this was too mdoern when i read it - As the main PC at the time was hardly anything more (ECS K7VZA).

This brings me to the conclusion that the PC was infact a Socket A PC and not what I thought as a Socket 7.
This explains alot and I am gratefully sorry. I do not know if the games had problems back then as my dad does not remember things like that. But i know it had an ATI Xpert 2000 Pro 16MB card which would have had V-Sych enabled which would have explained why the PC games didnt run too fast..

Now, I am understanding it all, and if i could put my Duron 1.3Ghz into the PC i could do well off with the games i wish to play above- But the Voodoo driver does not seem to have V-Sync option, and all software like aTuner etc do not support 3DFX.

Anyone got suggestions for V-Sync??? - Then my dream would be complete Cheesy

Currently the setup is:
Windows 98SE
DirectX 8.1
OpenGL 1.1
AMD Duron 1350Mhz
Soltek SL-75KAV/-X Motherboard
768MB of SDRAM-For internet smoothness
Voodoo 3 2000 PCI
3Com 3c905-TX (PCI)
Creative Sound Blaster AWE64 Gold (ISA)

Have you tried V.Control? See "sync to vertical refresh" option.
