Title: Howto run Need For Speed 3+4 In Glide on Voodoo4/5
Post by DenisF on 20.02.04 at 02:53:33
Oki since i really love those 2 games, and they look extremely ugly on D3D mode, i had to find a way to make them run in Glide mode on a V4/5.

Here's what iv'e done;
*Installed NFS4 (basicly it uses the same engine as NFS3, so at this point theoreticly whatever i do should work on NFS3)
*After the installation, 3dsetup (the game's rendering engine selection tool) showed my card is unknown.
*Shut down the pc
*Pulled out the V4, put in a v3 instead
*Booted to XP, shut down as soon as the login thingy appears
*Replaced the V3 by the V4
*Booted normally, XP was still loaded with the V4 (amigamerlin 3) drivers, i verified all of the files and they match the one's in the driver setup folder.
*Ran 3dsetup, It detected my card as a "3dfx Voodoo3"

Started the game, viola! it works perfectly in glide mode!
I bumped up all the settings to the highest, 1024*768*16(z), and 2xFSAA, still got around 60fps.
Hamazing :)

Now iv'e installed NFS3, applied the voodoo3 patch, and it also detected my voodoo4 as a voodoo3, game worked flawlessly in glide mode :)

Insofar no glitches/whatever have been found in other glide based games, which means my v4 works as a v4, but NFS3/4 *think* it's a v3 :)

Please note;
during this whole proccess, i never reinstalled any drivers or whatever, even when the V3 was in - amigamerlin3 drivers were used. (which are V4/5)

Please let me know if this works for you!

Regards,
/DenisF

concerning nfs & glide, here's my tip for nfs2se:
this version supports glide but only on voodoo1, here's what to do to run it on newer voodoos:
1. install the game
2. copy the .exe for glide version from the cd to your installation folder (& create a link to your desktop)
3. start this .exe, every voodoo should run in glide now!

er..are you sure that fsaa does not override the edge-aa setting? bet so..and it looks so..sadly the edge-aa feature isn't really noticeable. if so, the voodoo1 would have rocked much more than it even did!  8)

>>adding<<
god, i miss t-buffer fsaa since i run my radeon  :'(

In the words of the Big K:

Quote:
11. there is no x2FSAA with EdgeAA. just x2FSAA with different LOD offests when used with mipmap dithering to reduce banding.

EDIT;
But i always keep EdgeAA on, just in case :)
It doesn't really reduce performance.. so.. who cares.. let it rip.

yeahh..never seen a performance impact nor a better quality with edge-aa --> not really useful. (tried it especially with my old voodoo3 3000 one year ago)

..found something useful that remembered me of this topic.here:

1.For Need For Speed 3, make sure the "Voodoo 3 Patch" has already been installed, even for OEM version of the game that came bundled with the Voodoo3. Follow the directions with the patch PRECISELY, especially the copying of the VOODOO2A.DLL file (5/4/1999, 108KB) to the games install directory (this allows for higher resolutions to be selected in game, as high as 1600x1200 from what I can tell).
2.Run the 3D Device Setup program in the NFS3/4 Program Group at least once, and select "Direct3D Device 1".
3.MANUALLY EDIT THE REGISTRY as follows:
Find the
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Electronic Arts\Need For Speed III
and/or
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Electronic Arts\Need For Speed High Stakes
keys and highlight them..
Change these key values as follows:
"3D Card" = "3Dfx Voodoo3"
"3D Card Description" = "3dfx Voodoo3"
"Group" = "3Dfx"
"Thrash Driver" = "voodoo2" ("voodoo" also works for Voodoo1/Graphics mode..not as good as voodoo2 of course)
"D3D Device" should already be set at "0"...
"Hardware Acceleration" should already be set at "1"...
"Thrash Resolution" (only exists in NFS4) should already be set at "640x480"...
4.Run the game normally, but make sure the shortcut used to start the game DOES NOT contain any command line parameters (these parameters mostly override the registry and force the game to run in different Direct3D compatibility modes..

The pictures are strange, they are named ".jpg[1]" and when I try to give them a name like "123.jpg" they give me advertisings!

???

I don't think I drank too much today.
