Title: Had the weirdest dream, 3dfx. Post by Tim on 31.10.09 at 10:20:19 I dreamed Gary got fed up with collecting 3dfx, and sold or gave away all his prototypes etc. Then a day later there was this flashing banner on this site, that said that the 3dfx archive shut down is imminent, due to the biggest 3dfx collector stopping collecting. Everyone got depressed and stopped collecting. The thread under news was like 10 pages long lol. |

Unfortunately, that dream might come true, let's hope it doesn't, but I'm afraid it will. I anticipated this a while ago, I think that in the end almost all of us will sell their cards, let's see if there will be buyers for then.
Altough for me it's like a drug, I can't help buying cards, I am now almost 30 years old and I feel that in the future I won't have time for this hobby, but I hope I won't be forced to sell my collection. |

To be really really honest with you, I think most of us at one point have thought, "what if" somebody would give an offer I couldn't refuse or, "what if" I would ever sell my cards, how much would they go for. I think it's normal really. Then on the other hand, I've had a real change of heart about 3 years a go, when I had one of my first cards ever collected, an X-24, I almost sold that one because I decided it would be almost an impossible job to collect all these videocards I own now. Turns out, it wasn't too hard, but mostly had a lot of good luck. To make matters interesting again, I've had an email from a person high up in nVidia that has got 3 packing cases full of cards he reviewed when he was still an editor for a well known website, he wanted to chuck them, but was waiting for a 'museum' type thing that he could give them all to. Over the next two weeks he will sort out his cellar and give me a list. Very exciting. He had been reviewing cards since the Riva TNT uptil the X800/6800s. Phew, I wonder what will come up!!! :o |

I think sooner or later 3Dfx cards will be worthless and we will be forced to sell. But really I can not stop collecting 3dfx cards.
What value can have a v5 past 10 years? Quote:
Oky, I have news too. I am closing a deal for an impressive 3Dfx card (prototype). :) Oscar. |

I don't know, in the last two years I've seen something very strange. A lot of 3dfx collectors sold their collection (all the cards or almost all). Now, that's not the strange part, what's really strange is that always there were buyers, some were old collectors, but there were also new collectors, that just started to collect. Also, I can see here in my country the same thing. Some sell, but others start to buy. I can't explain how a new guy would start to collect now, in 2009. I mean, I supose that someone who start collecting 3dfx cards is not so young, because it had to be there in 1997-1998 when 3dfx was the best. Let's say it had only 14-16 years back then, now it is 25+, maybe even 30. Now, at this age, I can't explain how a man starts to collect old cards, I understand if he started collecting a while ago, but starting now is very hard to explain, ussually at this age people are much more interested in cars, homes, clothes, trips. |

No way, is it what I think it is? Give us a clue. :) I don't think the rare cards will become less valuable though, especially not the prototypes. There always seems to be buyers. |

Heh, I guess I fall into your 30+ years old, <2 years collecting category. :p I was gaming at 3dfx LANfests in the late 90's/early 00s playing Descent2, UT99 and Q3A mainly. Now I mainly just collect for nostalgic reasons. |
