Title: Obsidian2 SBi card, no medusa cable? Post by RaptorZX3 on 19.09.13 at 07:53:06
i've found a place in Montreal where they sell those Quantum3D Obsidian2 SBi card with 24mb of RAM. here's a link:
http://www.ebay.com/itm/Quantum-OBSIDIAN2-SBi-24-MB-PCI-Graphic-Card-/400292077329?pt=LH_DefaultDomain_0&hash=item5d33445f11 Problem is they don't have the medusa cable. I was wondering if it's possible to make those cards work without this cable? I see they have some pinouts on them, maybe those could be used as some kind of bypass or custom cable like they did for the Canopus cards? (Witchdoctor cable) Because i wouldn't mind putting 50$+some shipping (i believe it must be under 10$ since it's very near my house shipping-wise) for this card, if i could find a way to make it work without this damned medusa cable. Or...is it possible to get this kind of cable custom-made? |

You can make that cable, here's the pinout:
http://www.falconfly.de/downloads/MedusaCable-Pinout.zip You'll need a standard VGA cable and a DB26HD female connector (http://www.winfordeng.com/products/con26hd.php) You can also use the card without medusa cable using the TV output, you'll need a TV or a monitor with S-Video input, but the image quality will be much lower than using VGA from medusa). |

alright. So if i have a friend with good skills in soldering, i can just ask him to make me this cable?
i asked the seller about shipping to me. what the f.....16.10$ is the cheapest shipping to Canada, only for 1 item in a small bubble envelope?? |

i guess it is, but i need to ask for shipping fees with my postal code still...
i noticed the 3DFX "identify" page doesn't have this card listed there. |

That guy had more than 50 pieces for a long time now... I guess he wanted to get rid of them, so he was forced to ask a reasonable price. Even so he still has 10 pieces, that means that 50 bucks wasn't "really cheap"... |

it's just that peoples generally looking for 3dfx cards will type in "3dfx" or "voodoo", not "obsidian" or "quantum3d obsidian" and something similar. And that guy doesn't have "3dfx" or "voodoo" in the keywords, so i guess he doesn't know he's got a bunch of sought-after 3DFX cards!
i mean...this model is on-board 24mb of RAM, not a 12mb + 12mb daughter card on it, so it's built-in SLI i guess. And this place is called "pc recycle", someone talked about it once to me, and he told me you could just go there and check their stuff in person, and maybe find some great gems for a fraction of the price. The thing is i don't have a car and i would like to go there with a friend, who would maybe like to find some old hardware as well, but that would be during week-end. |

You can also use the internal pass-thru connection

I have more than enough skills at soldering if anyone wants me to create some of these cables for a small fee...nothing to expensive, maybe $5...plus parts. ;)

Markets been saturated with them for a long time, anyone that wants one already has one I suspect. |

I would like to have one, but don't feel like paying almost as much for shipping as the card itself costs.
Can anyone check what it actually costs to send such a package to The Netherlands? |

I noticed that, I bought two for myself (they were more expensive, but they had the medusa cable included) and I was very suprised to see they were in very good condition, they looked like new. I assumed they come from "retired" systems, but they didn't looked "used", there were no dust, the heatsinks looked very good, the card didn't show sign of use... Do you know more about those cards? I'm still curious to know from where they come. |

i don't have any more info...i just know they're located in the west side of Montreal, so if i want one, i can buy it on Ebay and the seller told me i can just come by to pick it up.

@ultima - I might combine with you for one and split the shipping if you like :)

that might be interesting to do, I'll think about it and let you know.
Cheapest would then be to have it delivered to me I think and then I resend it to you, but we'd have to check if that is correct. |

if i really want one, i would have to sell some games, because i'm damn broke these days...also, i'll probably have to take subway and bus to go there, technology places in Montreal are always stupidly far away in there...
