Title: Dead V5 5500?
Post by elfuego on 23.01.09 at 01:45:54
Hallo again!

I finally gathered the rest of the components for the retro rig and tried out the V5 5500 I bought. Unfortunately, this is what I got:

but before that screen I got this one:

It says it has a modified rainbow BIOS. So... according to you guys, do you think the card is dead (should I return it) or should I try to fix it somehow? To me it looks like the RAM is a goner, but maybe I am just wrong?

Try a stock bios and see what happens first.

Might u be able to help me out a bit? I never did the 3dfx BIOS updating before... and I also dont have a PCI video card next to me :( I will try to find one tomorrow. What else do I need? I got myself a bunch of 1.44" floppy disks and Win98 startup disk.

Currently I have nothing else, since the rig is "brand new".

How big are the chances that only the BIOS is bad and the card is still working?

P.S. Thanks for such a fast reply!!!  :)

Also dump the original bios so we can see how/if they were messed with :)

Alright - I downloaded BIOSes 1.15 and 1.18 along with the 3dfxflasher. I will dump the current BIOS image and upload it afterwards. I just hope to find a suitable PCI video card for the process...

Till then, wish me luck please... I invested a lot into this card already :(

The memory timings could be wrong.
( You are using a modified bios ).
Try to load the default values; it should fix that. ;)

I placed the original BIOS 1.18 and it LOOKS like it works!!! The pic isnt garbled anymore on starup screen, but I'm not claiming a thing till I test the card thoroughly in Glide. Please keep the fingers crossed for me, I really want this to work...  :-X

Yup, card definitely works! Just tested on 3dmark 2000 and 2001. Thanks again! I will upload the modified BIOS after I install the network card in the rig.  :)

As I promised, here's the dumped BIOS that was on the card itself before...

If anyone can look at it and tell me what was wrong with it? :-)
