Title: Voodoo 4500 AGP with TV ; UltimateRacePro
Post by tigeroo on 12.06.04 at 13:01:17
I have a Voodoo 4500 card with a PCB serial of:
600-0908-00A0
...and a sticker of:
Sn C03E097250 "Made in Taiwan"

The board has a TV connection and a PS2 type socket.

These codes are not listed in the 'recognise your hardware' section, does anybody know what board this is and what the required drivers are. I just tried to get UltimateRacePro working with it and got the 'Failed to initialize video' message.

I would be extremely grateful for assistance!

Look here :

http://www.falconfly-central.de/cgi-bin/yabb/YaBB.pl?board=general;action=display;num=1086019062;start=15#20

It should be a Powercolor EvilKing 4, which runs fine with 3dfx Reference or 3rd Party Drivers.

If the Game fails to launch, it usually means it is a Driver Problem, or a Hardware Limitation of the Voodoo4...
--------

Seems a very old Game, several Patches exist for it :
http://www.3dgamers.com/games/ultimateracepro/

See if those help, and we'll need nore Info about your System (Operating System, RAM, CPU, which Driver you use etc.)

Since it has Glide support, and is quite old, there is a possibility that it expects a Voodoo1 or Voodoo2-specific Glide Version.
See if any Glide Files are contained in the Game Directory (rename them, so the installed System Drivers are used instead).

Otherwise, it should still run with DirectX/Direct3D according to the description.

That rings a bell (thrown the original documents away!), I think you are right on the mark there. Thank you, much appreciated.

I have a copy of this game which came with a Creative Labs Soundblaster AWE64 Gold card.  It does run on a Voodoo5 5500 AGP, although it generates the following message at startup:

_GlideInitEnvironment: glide2x.dll expected   Voodoo Graphics, none detected

In spite of the error message, the game runs fine.  I don't see a Glide splash screen at startup.

For reference purposes, my system has the following components:

  Soyo SY-7VCAE Motherboard
Intel Pentium III  933 MHz Socket 370 Processor
  3dfx Voodoo5 5500 64MB AGP Graphics Adapter
Creative Labs Sound Blaster Live! Platinum (Model SB4760P)
  256 MB SDRAM
  Microsoft Windows 98 SE

Seems it is looking for an old Voodoo1 or Voodoo2 only Device, which it doesn't find.

Since you have correct Glide Files for your Card installed, some Games actually can still run using those instead (e.g. on Voodoo3/4/5)...

I installed the game on a box with a Voodoo2, and it does use a Glide2 renderer with that card.  You can see the old Glide2 splash screen at the start of the game and in the "Tune Your Display" section of the Main Menu, it shows the old 3dfx symbol as the renderer.  You apparently cannot choose the DirectX renderer if a Voodoo card is recognized as being installed.

On the machine with a Voodoo5, you see a DirectX symbol as the renderer in the "Tune Your Display" section, and there is no Glide option available, although you can use software rendering.

ok,

So I installed the patches for the game and downloaded what seemed to be the most up-to-date drivers. now I get the following error messsage...but the game works after this. I tried renaming HW3D.DLL and copying the glide2.dll and glide3.dll into the game folder but the game seems to work the same way. I do not get a glide splash screen but I do get a 3dfx one when it changes modes. The file the message relates to does not seem to exist on my PC.

"The driver of a PowerVR 3D card has been detected, but the hardware could not be initialized You should remove the file SGL.DLL from your WINDOWS and WINDOWS\SYSTEM directory”

Patience,

Thanks for the info!  Prior to my last post, I had tried putting the Glide2 .dll and .ovl files into the game directory (which didn't work), but your step of "hiding" the hw3d.dll is crucial to success.  I am using the .dll from the 1.04 (non-beta) reference drivers, so my version is a little older, but it works as well.

tigeroo,

With a Voodoo5 or Voodoo4, you would expect to see the newer 3dfx logo splash screen rather than the old one used with Voodoo2, and apparently, you do.

Patience,

Yes a PowerVR 3D. Do you know why it would be reporting that? driver problem perhaps? or just an old game. The card is definitely not a PowerVR.
