I know, S3 isn't known for the best cards around but thought it was interesting still.

Hm, I didn't actually expect S3 to be close to their formerly announced schedule.

IMHO hey built alot of potential into their Delta- and GammaChrome cards, but - as usual - failed on a few ingridients required for success (Driver Support, Global Marketing and Distribution)

I remember their Cards being launched with absolutely terrible Drivers, which caused even the biggest Resellers here in Germany to eventually withdraw the entire S3 line from their shops.
(ironic, as the Chrome series actually had enough power to take a stand - unfortunately not until a year after release, when Drivers had finally picked up considerably)

I wish S3 the best of luck, but that requires them not repeating the old mistakes that sabotaged their own success many times now :-/

I wish as well, that some massive Investor would go to S3 and enable them to make a kick-arse card to have a 3rd player on the GFX stage again...
Sentimental, but I sometimes love looking at the 3D GFX ads and tests from the very old days... All the old big players, all there, fighting for the best 3D Accell for the buck - those were great days !

lol I agree with you on that one FF, really wish the Kyro series of cards had picked up, I thought they had a good thing going with the Kyro II and although the drivers weren't updated that often it played alot of games pretty decently. XGI getting in the mix more would have been a nice thing as well but both of those are no longer around either. Would like to see another company take ATI and Nvidia on. Just gives us consumers an added choice.

Much the same as AMD and Intel, which by this article might be a third CPU coming up if they can get it going.

NewChip

Sounds interesting at least.

Hmm...sounds painful, where did they put their finger? ;D

Seriously though, the strength of S3 came when they were bought by VIA. ;)

Now practically EVERY EPIA mainboard has an S3 GFX built in. 8-)

KEWL for them! :)

Hm, I actually read though their News Release and stumbled...

About the S3 Graphics Chrome 400 Series Graphics Processors

DirectX 10.1 Support [...]

Looks like they did it again ::)
64bit RAM but advertising DX10.1 Support.

That means S3 is continuing their old road of failures :
Hardware with potential but stuffed with checkmark features and crippled by some catastrophic design error.

those cards are not meant for gaming-they should be great in video decoding, and have extremely low power consumption and heat dissipation.good choice for barebone pcs,and perhaps notebooks as well..

Yeah, but without a recognized Desktop 3D Card, S3 will never get the broadband attention required to get a decent cut of the Market...
