/BIOS settings questions/
20.04.05 at 17:29:56

I have some questions about settings in the BIOS.

...

/1/ What is the PCI Bus Mastering? It is set on disabled by default.

/2/ What is the PCI VGA Palette Snooping? Is also disabled by default.

Should I enable them two?

...

/3/ What is AGP Aperture Size? Got it with my BIOS update, before there wasn't such option. Guess it's 64 MB by default. Dangerous if I put an higher value?

Thanks and good evening!

PCI Bus mastering definition: -

http://www.pcguide.com/ref/mbsys/buses/types/pciIDEBM-c.html

RECOMMENDED = ENABLE

(providing you have a mainboard and hdd / cd / dvd drives that are Ultra-ATA capable. i.e. ATA33/66/100/133)

VGA Palette Snoop definition: -

http://www.pcguide.com/ref/mbsys/bios/set/pciSnoop-c.html

RECOMMENDED = DISABLE

AGP Aperture size definition: -

http://www.ocfaq.com/article.php/overclocking/vidcard/43

RECOMMENDED = HALF of your total RAM

AGP Aperture size...

if you use a radeon and you get an instable machine maybe setting this value down to 32mb can fix it....
64mb, 128mb....no difference in speed....no matter whats your value....

Actually, it's about the ATI on the motherboard, which is disabled, so it doens't make much difference.

But for the BUS Mastering, I think I have UDMA (Ultra DMA) and Enhanced DMA. So setting it on will be ok right?

Hum well thanks...

Tongue

Compaq BIOSs are very limited and that's a shame, but apart from that I really think they are pretty good.

If you are using a voodoo for the video card, set the AGP Aperture as low as possible (4 MB).

Good link for motherboard bios settings with voodoo video cards:

I always have mine set to 64MB with no problems.

It can't be that of my Voodoo, since it's a PCI one. It's that of the integrated ATI chip.

If I always have my PC detecting a new CPU and setting the time back to 00:00, is the problem coming from the battery (the one on the mobo, often from Sony)?

Yup, dead battery - just pop out the old one and go buy a replacement to pop back in afterward! Wink

Did it yesterday. Now all seems back to normal.
Actually, on my QDI jumperless motherboard, I can set the CPU speed directly from the BIOS menu!

Nah, pretty normal - I've had lots of jumperless mainboards that have CPU settings in the BIOS. Grin

Yes, but I have a Pentium I MMX @ 233MHz and it was running @ 100MHz until yesterday!

Jumperless Pentium boards will default to 100MHz by default as a safety feature - so, if like yours, the CMOS battery fails...the system will still boot! Grin

Well, it's not only a Pentium board actually. It showed the message "CMOS Cheksum error" or something like that, and then went back to the default setting and kept on finding a mysterious new CPU... but Windows worked fine...

PCs... what a mystery
