Voodoo 2 problem
06.02.09 at 12:49:59

its nice to see some 3dfx fans. I started with a Orchid righteous 3d. I moved up to 2 sli cards after that. I Loved the cards. I ran them in a pentium 350 and they worked perfectly. I still have the cards now. Glquake was probably the most memorable game(unreal, Kingpin, Half-life, AVP).

Anyway about 4 years ago(was out of the loop for about 8 years) I put together a system with a athlon 1.8mgz iirc. And 256 mb of memory. Mobo has a nforce chipset. Back when I originally put the system together I had issues. I could run one card with no problem at all. But with 2 cards it booted fine. After the driver install on the second card, i would reboot the computer. As soon as windows would start and load the drivers it would reboot without warning. It would constantly loop over and over again. I tried the alt-con-del as windows was loading the drivers, and actually was able to delete the rundll file that was causing the reboot. So I could actually run the computer.

Well, that brings me to now. I pulled everything out of the garage and set it back up again. Same exact problem as before. I found the fastvoodoo drivers and they actually kept the computer from rebooting. So I tried some games. To my surprise almost all the games ran. (half-life, unreal, quake, dungeon keeper, avp 1, 2 is questionable, mechwarrior 3) Anyways, Im getting a wierd graphics glitch with every game. When running one card the problem is worse than when running both cards. It seems like the textures are pixelated. Its actually the same problem on all games. So Im sure its probably a hardware problem.

I ordered a voodoo 5500 and realized its the wrong agp slot. aarrgghh. I just ordered a voodoo 3000 pci, so I will try that too. Im thinking about putting a pentium 677 together to see how the voodoo 2 works in that system.

Any feedback would be appreciated.

Sounds like it's an issue with one of the cards.

Have you checked both V2's individually? Do they both have the same problem, or is it just one?

Yep. Just checked each card. The problem is with just 1 of the cards. I might go on ebay and look for another card. I have a pair of Best Data fx2 12mb voodoo 2 cards. I havent seen 1 on ebay for a long time. So Ill probably have to get another type and hope theyll work with the patch.

Im expecting a pci voodoo 3000 in the mail soon. Im going to try that and see how that works. I just picked up a mobo with a pentium 677. I was planning on trying the voodoo 5500 on that mobo.

But, after thinking it over, I might just pick up a tower off of Ebay already assembled. It looks like that will be cheaper than putting together a second computer.

How do the voodoo 3000/5500 work with the older games? Like Glquake, Unreal, powerslide, mechwarrior 3, etc? I would think they would work fine, since they are all glide cards. It would be nice to have the same compatibility as a voodoo 2, but to have a single card. Seems like there would be less opportunity for conflicts.

Thanks.

As you guessed, in old games glide support is just awesome - so you won't have any trouble playing middle-old games on either V5 or V3.

But there might be a problem playing first generation of glide games on V3/V5 though. For example I remember not being able to play F16 Falcon VS MiG29 Fulcrum on anything higher then V2. Whatever I did, it just didn't detect glide. But for such old games even a single V2 is more then enough to enjoy!

Have fun!  Wink

Well, i started buying parts for the new computer(case, mobo, 667 p3 proc, ram, etc). I also ordered a creative voodoo 2 12 mb card to replace the bad one. I should also be getting the voodoo 3000 any day now. So Ill test that out first in the computer Im running now. Once I get all the parts for the new computer, Ill test out the v 5500 in that one.  Wink

I'm just going to run windows 98 in both computers. Hopefully between both computers, Ill be able to run every older game I want. LoL. the plan is to have the voodoo 2 sli in the 1.7ghz AMD computer, and the v 5500 in the p3 667. I would like to put all 3 cards in the p3 667. But, Im sure that would cause alot of headaches as far as drivers for glide, opengl, etc.

no issues running a v5 card together with v2 sli.just make sure you have voodoo5 opengl/glide dlls in the system folder (d3d will not conflict at all).if you need to run a glide/opengl game on the v2 sli, just drop the v2 glides to the game folder and you are set.

Hmm. Thats interesting. Well, Ill wait and see how the "new" computer runs everything. If everything runs good and I have no compatibility problems, then ill probably just run that computer and put this computer back in storage. It would be nice to have 2 voodoo 2 cards and 1 voodoo 5500 in the same case Smiley

Well, I recieved the voodoo 2(looked like a brand new card) card to replace my defective card. I also recieved the voodoo 3000 pci. I tried the voodoo 2 in sli first. After downloading the mis-matched card driver everything worked pretty well. Had a couple problems, but overall was pretty happy with how they ran with my games.

Today I just tried the 3000(amigamerlin drivers). Every game ran almost flawlessly. It was nice to be able to bump the resolution up to 1280x1024. Glquake ran very good, Unreal, etc etc. I was very impressed. It made me second guess putting a slower computer(for slot compatibility) together to be able to use the 5500 agp that I just got.

Im running a Athlon xp 1.4 ghz chip right now and my motherboard agp slot is too new for the 5500. The nice thing about the motherboard is that it has no integrated video. I was going to downgrade my mobo and processor so the agp slot would match. I wasnt that worried about downgrading anyway since I was having a decent amount of compatibility problems. Well, after running the voodoo 3 and everything running pretty well I think Ive changed my mind.

As luck would have it, I just saw a 5500 PCI on Ebay! I couldnt pass it up. Im pretty excited to say the least! I already bought some new components for another computer. So Ill swap those things and my 1.4ghz athlon and mobo over to the new tower. I might go ahead and pick up a faster socket A athlon since it would be a simple swap. woohoo.

P.s. Is there anything I need to know about the amigamerlin drivers? It looks like the drivers for the 3000 are the same as the drivers for the voodoo 4 and 5. Thanks.
