Title: GL games hang on startup
Post by dobbz on 16.08.02 at 21:54:34
Voodoo4 1.04.01b, Win98se

I had to reinstall Windows, now Quake and Quake3 hang my machine right after the 3dfx splash screen. I reinstalled my drivers and directx but that didnt help. What's also worrying me is the software version of Quake (non-gl) wont load either.

Hmm...

That's a difficult one, as the Problem is indeed quite severe.

I can only guess, that something got screwed in the Registry.

You might try cleaning the Registy of all 3dfx entries (search for the Key "3dfx"), and re-installing the Driver once more...
Ususally, that helps with some of the more stubborn errors.

Also try running DXdiag (located under Windows\System). If any errors are apparent to it, it will tell (or crash itself).

That might indicate an error more principal in nature.

Crashing Games can also be an indication of missing Chipset Drivers (see if you have all current ones), or completely unrecognized/not installed Hardware Drivers (look in the Device Manager for Unknown Devices still pending correct Installation).

Crashes can as well be caused by obsolete Sound Drivers, that often don't cooperate well with more current DirectX releases. Having that up-to-date solved quite a few of mystery Problems in the past ;)

I take it DirectX is installed already...

Hope some of that helps....
Without more detailled System specs, that's about all that comes to my mind.

Greetings

ok, reinstalled directx again and it loads but it 'has problems' accessing just about every area of system info so it asks to continue anyway. the display tests work fine.

Do you have the chipset drivers installed for your motherboard? ???

Hm, would be really good to know your System specs...

In case you suspect Problems emitting from
- CPU/FSB Overclocking
- too critical RAM timings in Bios
- Faulty Bits in RAM,

...it's quite useful to check the overall System integrity.

A perfect tool for detecting Errors of CPU/RAM/Chipset Combo is Prime95.
Download : ftp://mersenne.org/gimps/p95v21.zip

In there, you can run a "Self Test", which can take some time to run, but it is very successful in finding Problems.

Screenshot :

In case a faulty RAM Module is suspected, you could as well run "Memtest86".

i really doubt its a hardware problem.. the games ran fine until i reinstalled win98.

Hm..

Then I'd say you either forgot something, or some Installation (Drivers, Software, OS) screwed up...

Really hard to say, as everyone has his own way of Installing ::)

Hmm...

You have some Beta Files in there, which I don't have.

I use DirectX8.1 .

You seem to use DirectX8.1b , as some Files have slightly newer Version numbers.

Problem is, I don't know if DX8.1b contains any Beta Versions (which it shouldn't).

Is this for sure the very same DirectX Version you have running before re-installing ?

The DXdiag Text also does not reveal what exact Motherboard (Chipset) you are using.... Did you use the (obsolete) Drivers off an Installation CD, or get the latest ones from the Web ?
