*g* No.1 is my primary gaming Rig with an ATI Radeon 9800pro 128MB AGP No.2 is the secondary gaming Rig with an ATI Radeon 9600 128MB AGP No.15 is my Laptop which I sometimes use for some gaming when not at home (Radeon IGP320M = Radeon 7000, unfortunately shared Memory, but works surprisingly well) No.3 and No.4 used to be gaming rigs in the past, but due to decline of actual use, have been reverted into pure Network Clients. All others were pure Network Clients right from the start. The Silicon Graphics and DEC Alpha Workstations were aquired to gather some non-x86 experience and play around with former Dream-Systems, which had unreachable launch prices beyond 10000$ in their days. Systems still in Service : SGI Indy SGI Indigo2 SGI Power Indigo2 SGI Octane (2x) DEC Alphastation 4/166 Digital Personal Workstation DPWS-533a (2x) Due to power consumption and nowadays generally poor Energy/Performance ratio, I will unfortunately have to start selling them off this year. (Electricity gets too expensive in Germany to keep them in full service) They will be replaced by much more efficient AMD Athlon64 and Opteron Systems. For that reason, early plans to extend the non-x86 line with HP-UX (HP-PA) and SUN (UltraSparc) based Systems had to be dropped completely. |

Hi guys. I don't understand why you guys would use 3dfx cards in new motherboards /modern pcs.
I'm building an older pc so I can play windows 9x games and use 3dfx. I use a Serial ATA hard drive so I can't parition it and install windows 9x like I could before. My current pc, main usage Win XP Pro Sp2 3.0Ghz E P4 Prescott w/ Hyper Threading D865PERL 800Mhz fsb mobo w/ ht support 1gig ram 2x 512 pc3200 in dual channel w/ aluminum heatsinks 70gig 2x 36gig 10k rpm sata in RAID 0 ATI 9800 Pro a-i-w omega 2.6.25a 420watt silverstone stf40 w/ PFC Acer 17in AL1731 LCD monitor using DVI BenQ1620 Pro & Nec 3520a awesome dvd burners My older system: Pentium 3 450Mhz slot 1 24x cd P6bx-a+ mobo Voodoo 3 3000 agp 384mb pc100 ram 230watt Etronics 17'in LCD (vga cable only) IBM Deskstar DJNA-371350 13.5igig harddrive probably install Windows 98 upgrade ^^waiting for ECS p6bx-a+ mobo replacement anyday now. Hmm, time to develop a custom board with AGP2x ? You could use the AGP2PCI Adapter in combination with an AMD Opteron 150 and some high-end board with 66MHz PCI slots ? Only compatibility *might* be a problem. And of course the money... |
Title: Re: Okay 3dfx people! let's post our PC's+ Names & Post by gdonovan on 07.09.05 at 14:55:41
Do they make a high end board with 66 mhz PCI slots? That would work with the proper AGP2PCI adapter assuming the adapter doesn't default to 33 mhz operation and nothing else on the PCI bus doesn't rob to much bandwidth.

Too bad Games don't take advantage of Multi CPU systems (yet), this ~10000$ investment would turn out actually slower than your average 1000$ Box using a higher clocked Single CPU.
Fitting that with any Voodoo would literally redefine the term "bottleneck" (people would call it "voodooneck" thereafter ;) ) |

Indeed. The AMD Athlon 64 4000+ is a lot faster than the AMD Opteron 140. The specifications are the same except that the AMD Athlon 64 4000+ is clocked 1GHz higehr ;D Only multithreaded games will run al lot faster. Since Quake 3 runs more than smoothly enough on a single high-end CPU I don't see the point of installing an 3dfx Voodoo 5 6000 in a dual CPU system. Unless you want to be cool ;), if so : Buy 4 Opteron 850's, Buy 4 modules of 1GB, Buy 4 harddrives of 400GB and install an 3dfx Interactive, Inc. Voodoo 5 6000 with 4 VSA-100 chips ;D But first I need to win 4 lottery's before I can pay the whole system ::) |

Obi-Wan_Kenobi just wait, the Chinese are getting into the motherboard buisness. They're building stuff like those old mother boards that had 2 cpu slots. But the Chinese are building them for Pentium 4's. They have built some motherboards with 2 pentium 4 cpu slots, but the coding is LPT or something like that, so Unix and Linux are only compatable, not windows. Thou microsoft is pinning them in a corner with law suits over a guy who quit MS to work for google and the chinese pc market.
I'm sure within a year they'll release a motherboard that has 4 cpu slots for pentium 4 processors, cpu's using mott metals instead of silicon, ATI R580 will be out, FSB will be 2,000mhz and pc speed can reach 12Ghz with all 4 cpu slots filled. In about 3 weeks ATI will release the R520 series which will wow anyone. Well that's the info I gathered on what's to come. The Chinese motherboard 2 and 4 cpu slot info I read in Maximum PC, thou some of the people there aren't as knowlegable as you'd think. Perhaps they'll make it AGP 2x and 8x compatable, but it seems like all motherboard makers want to get rid of agp all together and go with pci express. I'm prefer agp, I don't like pci cards, even thou I have a 16x pci express slot on my mobo, just don't like modern pci-e video cards. |

@ FalconFly
Wel Flight Simulator 2004, FarCry, Doom3 and QuakeIII rena and Half-Life2 do support SMP fully. I have tested those apps both with 1 CPU and with both in FS 2004 I had the greatest improvment of 78% in speed @ 1600 x 1200 x 32 FSAA x6 AF x16, the ASUS ATi Radeon X800XT Platintinum Edition AGP was my Main VGA., I must say that hav'n 2 OpteronDP 244's in action with FS 2004 at that sick reso with max details and Densities is a dream, the system did am max of 57 fps with 2 CPU's and about 36 with 1 CPU. |
Title: Re: Okay 3dfx people! let's post our PC's+ Names & Post by FalconFly on 07.09.05 at 17:38:15
*ugh*
As far as I know, none of them natively support even HT yet, let alone SMP. (Quake 3 is an exception, but SMP support was always buggy and was therefor disabled by default inside the Engine) SMP support is just being carefully begun to being advertised for "future Gaming" by leading technology creators, and even for the forseeable future they predict only a very slow start for using it. AI and other less relevant tasks are planned to being made Multithreaded in the future, but that's still a long road ahead, no single sign of that exists in today's Games, all absolutely Single-Threaded (with Q3 being the only odd exception within the entire last 5 years with its broken and abandoned SMP support plans). In such high Resolutions and Quality settings, CPU power becomes irrelevant anyway, it's clear that only and exclusively your Video Card is the limiting factor. The only SMP accelleration found at all would be the common SMP Extension inherent to OpenGL, but that alone doesn't mean alot either in such extremely VGA limited games. DirectX AFAIK has no SMP support whatsoever (yet), so your performance improvements likely come from one CPU having unlimited access to both RAM busses over the Hypertransport link or some other really odd System abnormality (you'd have to check with a CPU load dagram though) Benchmarks with 2 CPU's were extensively done on many Systems and the common outcome still was (and is) that Dual CPU Systems are useless for most Games. In fact, several Systems tested actually yielded a small slowdown over Single CPU tests due to SMP overhead. The only time your figures would make sense, if you were to perform then in Software Rendering (and even there your reported gains are difficult to achieve outside of development simulators) Otherwise, if you have a significant overload of background tasks, those would be taken by one CPU, while the other now can concentrate on running the Game. If you want to benchmark CPU's, the old common rule applies : Benchmark in lowest possible Resolution and low Quality settings. Anything else invalidates your benches, as soon as the Video Card (or other component) becomes a bottleneck even for one split second. (Those benches included much more powerful CPU's as well as much faster Video Cards, the result remained the same) --------- Sorry to disappoint you, but there's something "different" (diplomatic word for 'screwed up') in your System configuration that prevents one CPU from delivering its full performance when used single. Note that if you use Win2000, this OS becomes highly unpredictable if installed in SMP mode, and then left running with only one CPU. Unless you're planning to perform extensive manual work on its deepest Structure (the only way to manually fix it), it's simply known as absolutely mandatory to re-install it from scratch when moving to Single CPU again, if you don't... funny stuff can be expected. |

Yes, but it was auto-disabled for a good reason, support for it was broken (expected behaviour on some Systems was alot like 3dfx HSR... Missing Geometry and all kinds of funny stuff, making it lightning fast but usually unplayable)

Title: Re: Okay 3dfx people! let's post our PC's+ Names & Post by Obi-Wan_Kenobi on 07.09.05 at 18:53:03
I have tested it my self, I use FS 2004 about 80% of my free time, and Dual OpteronDP 244 is slot faster than Single OpteronDP 244, don't worry I have tried it out and really there is a difference and it's very normal that Flightsims are multi threaded.
FarCry the same thing, even the Log File of FarCry see that my system has two logi processor and also states 2 usable Logic Processors. Doom3 as it's from Id software has standard SMP support all Id games have that since Q3A, only SMP get detected and enabled Automaticly, Q3A and RTCW are the only 2 where you have to enable SMP manually with this code in the Console: r_SMP 1 enter, then restart the app to play with SMP. But everyone has thier own sight of things ofcourse. |

Well, I stand corrected concerning FS2004 SMP support, turns out MicroSoft is well ahead of time with that one indeed ;)
Still leaves the Farcry and Doom3 mystery, maybe my Brain has some ECC error does I didn't notice those Games being years ahead of the general Gameing industry development *g* ----------------- Quake 3 : almost no SMP support http://www.tech-report.com/reviews/2001q4/athlonmp-1900/index.x?pg=4 http://www.planetunreal.com/TheAdminPage/FAQs2.htm Q...Is EPIC planning on SMP support for UT. All my servers have dual Processor's ranging from 400Mhz to 600Mhz. We have been thinking of removing one processor from each server and building another to maximize the servers. Any ideas!!! A...We're not planning on SMP support for UT. Q3A's SMP support is only for the rendering pipeline and it's my understanding that it doesn't make use of the second processor when running a dedicated server either. Just run two servers on the same machine. Q3A, almost no significant gains (a lousy Celeron 550 can even beat Dual PIII 550 helped by a tweaked .dll) : http://www.firingsquad.com/hardware/q3adrivers/page3.asp -------------------- Doom3 : No SMP support http://www.computerbase.de/artikel/hardware/prozessoren/2005/test_intel_dual-core_benchmarks/35/ http://www.pcstats.com/articleview.cfm?articleid=1836&page=11 While the frame rates in Doom 3 are decent, one must remember that even this relatively new game cannot take advantage of dual core processors. This is something to keep in mind if you are a hardcore gamer. ---------------------- Doom3 & HL2 : No SMP Support http://www.3davenue.com/1342.html Based on these figures, it is clear that dual processing does little for games - while the 4800+ obviously shows its power over the 4200+ and 3500+ in every test including games, the fact the 4200+ and 3500+ are primarily neck and neck says that extra core doesn't do a whole lot for gaming ------------------- FarCry : no SMP support http://www.computerbase.de/artikel/hardware/prozessoren/2005/test_intel_dual-core_benchmarks/36/ |
Title: Re: Okay 3dfx people! let's post our PC's+ Names & Post by Obi-Wan_Kenobi on 07.09.05 at 21:31:01
okay , but it will be usefull for later titles, otherwise the whole Dual Core concept shouldn't be taken seriously.
Anyways Flight Simulator 2004 does take a very good advantage of it and that is also the major reason I go for Dual, it's just alot more powerfull than single, I've tetsed that myself. I also take the use of Multitasking, burning a CD with CPU0 and playing UT 2K4 with CPU1 and you won't see a big performance drop at all, or do Seti@Home with CPU1 and formatt the Hardrive with CPU0 foran instance so they also a very usefull advantages to SMP And yeah FarCry does imho also run better on a dual CPU based rig, but yes my ole sys was an A64 3200 S754 1MB L2 & the XFX nVidia 6800GT AGP and Now I have a Dual OpteronDP 244 2x 1MB L2 and an ASUS ATi X800XT PE AGP and yes maybe there is a difference. Anyway it's for me a great improvement, and yes there are lots of game that don't make use of SMP yet , but hey at least i'm ready for the newer stuff that will right :) So there is still a bright light at the end of the tunnel :) |
Title: Re: Okay 3dfx people! let's post our PC's+ Names & Post by FalconFly on 07.09.05 at 21:33:58
I'm not picking on you, I have 7 SMP machines in operation myself for a good reason as well ;)
I just needed to confirm "which Game supports what?" just to make sure after the FS2004 surprise. |
Title: Re: Okay 3dfx people! let's post our PC's+ Names & Post by Obi-Wan_Kenobi on 07.09.05 at 21:36:53
Well I know you are not pick'n on me ;) I didn't say you would even do that hehe, but FS2004 is the prgram that makes most use of SMP at high reso's and max densities, anyways I dunno if there are more sims that can make great advantages of SMP, hopefully that FS 2006 will take a better bennefit of it :)
but still HL2 does take advantage of the Dual Core implant! so it's still could be possible that SMP does take an effect ;) the 4800+ runs Dual Core @ 2.2Ghz the 3500+ 2.2Ghz Single core right? I was just very dissapointed with the S754 Athlon64 3200+ CLawhammer, it wasn't even powerfull enough to run FS 2K4 at max densities and max details with an GF6800GT, sad for such specs. the Dual OpteronDP 244 really changed my Point Of View of things, even with 1 244 CPU it out paced the A64 3200. lol @ Least I sold the A64 system for 900 Euro's to a friend hehe |
Title: Re: Okay 3dfx people! let's post our PC's+ Names & Post by FalconFly on 07.09.05 at 21:53:41
hehe, no that is not an SMP effect coming from inside the Game, that tiny advantage may at best be one CPU taking away the OS overhead, leaving one to fully concentrate on the Game.
If the game had SMP support, those Dual Core scores would be significantly higher alltogether. |
Title: Re: Okay 3dfx people! let's post our PC's+ Names & Post by Obi-Wan_Kenobi on 07.09.05 at 22:06:30
yeah that's true hehe but still an advantage in a small corner :) anyway these are indeed no SMP based apps, just simple Uni core based apps, the GFX card takes about 80% of the job, which leaves the easy stuff for the CPU.
this thread is still a very intersting one ;) |

You have shown me some benchmarks with FS2004. The X800XT PE was ahead of a GeForce 6800GT in SLi modus. Well, it looks like FS2004 runs very good on the R420. This will affect the scores as well. (My point is, it's hard to compare CPU's when using a different GPU ;)). Anyways, for multitasking a SMP machine is way faster. For gaming a single CPU system is enough these days. (Except for some games, Quake 3 excluded since it will run seamless on relative slow CPU's, too) Remember that this discussion started because of some idea's to run the V5 6000 in a faster system :P |

yes true the R420 is a master chip hehe, so is the OpteronDP 244 :P anyways, let's get back to the topic then, if there are people with new systems! :P
It would be nice to see thier system layouts 8) |

Intel Pentium 4 2,26GHz Asus P4S533c 512MB PC2700 DDR-SDRAM (CL2.5, generic) 256MB PC2700 DDR-SDRAM (CL2.5, Samsung) Club3D Radeon 9700 128MB Chieftec Dragon DA-01-BD (blank, bigtower, no psu) Chieftec ATX-1136H (360Watt, ATX psu) Plextor 40x12x40x PX-W4012TA Seagate Barracuda V, 120GB (7200rpm, ATA100, 8MB) Last two upgrades were the videocard and the extra 512MB of memory (one of my 256MB modules died, the remaining one has errors at the last few megabytes) CPU is next in line for an upgrade because it's now the performance bottleneck. Though I might just skip it and save up for a Core 2 Duo PC. |

I don't know what I'll go for because I don't know when I'll be replacing this system. But I'm not gonna spend an insane amount of money on just a processor.

yeah then you'd be better off with the E6600 Model they are just over about 300 bucks :)

My first A7V333-R is still alive and rocking ;) it's been do'n a stable service for about 5 years now with Win2K Pro+ SP4 ;) MSI KT3 Ultra is nice too, like the Red PCB of those. Anyways ASUS is a very reliable brand in most cases all my systems have ASUS motherboard setups all are different and all never failed me once.
Most people I know have ASUS since they make robust motherboards with extreme stabillity. |

I like Asus but all of A7V333 that i've found was broken :-/

Still get mails from that man that it's still running like a rock :) Mobo was the MSI MS9130 K8T Master2-FAR :) [not FAR7, the older model] with Dual Opteron244 CG CPU's 1x Corsair XMS Platinum TwinX1024RELLPT [Registred, ECC, CAS2,Low Latency. AT X800 XT PE AGP from ASUS and the SB Audigy2 Platinum still use that one now :) it was mainly built for Flight Simulator 2004 :) You have a nice pic of your MSI rig? 8) |

well my 3 PC's have names that fit them :)
SVETA is the AThlonXP 2700+ the 3dfx PC FIREFOX is the CrossFire rig since the plane FIREFOX was fast that name always fitted my Game PC. YODA is the laptop, Yoda is fast but the smallest of the three and also most protable PC of the lot which suits YODA's name as well :) Giving PC's names is also easy for net working so you won't have to remember all the specs of the machine it's just the nick name that reminds you where to put what :) Been networking with PC names for like 12 years and gotta say it's an easier way of networking. |

I have backups of the basic install of windows98SE with SP and all chipset drivers installed, except ofcourse of the voodoo cards and other videocards. I don't have the room to have 10 pc's running for tests, so this is the best solution for me. Works just fine, reloading an image with ghost is fast enough, everyone knows that. |
