Napalm & Daytona
02.03.05 at 09:51:14

Seeing as I'm close to adding the V4 and V5 to my list and being totally confused by the V4 line of cards, I thought I'd open this thread to gain some clarity.

This is what I gathered so far but I'm sure I made mistakes (also missing some stuff). Any help on clarifying the Napalm & Daytona cards would be nice.

(Daytona cards are Voodoo 4-2's; being phase 2 of the VSA architecture)

Note- Don't assume clock speeds on any of the prototypes unless the owner has actually reported it.

I have see clockspeeds all over the board for cards with an assumed 166 mhz default. I doubt most of the early cards have a clockspeed anywhere near production cards.

Off the top of my head I can think of a 4500 with 100 mhz clock and a 5500 with 143 mhz clock. The early VSA-100 where very poor at running at high speeds in SLI, 3dfx took a lot of flack for that.

One quote from someone at Nvidia was that VSA stood for "very slow architecture" since at the time 3dfx had 2 chip SLI running at 100 mhz.

Card below is dated 4499-

The most problems I'm having is with the 4500 and 4800 cards.

The retail cards
There's no question about these cards, that's for sure.
-
3dfx Voodoo 4 4500 VSA-100 PCI 166MHz 32MB SDR

-
3dfx Voodoo 4 4500 VSA-100 PCI 166MHz 32MB SDR DVI (Mac)

-
3dfx Voodoo 4 4500 VSA-100 AGP 166MHz 32MB SDR

Prototypes
I know there are at least two cards with both a DVI and TV out connector, one is PCI and the other is AGP. But whether they are 4500's or 4800's is somewhat of an unknown factor to me (like their specifications). And one or two might even be Daytona's.
-
3dfx Voodoo 4 4000 VSA-100 AGP ??MHz 16MB SDR

-
3dfx Voodoo 4 4500 VSA-100 PCI ??MHz ??MB SDR DVI/TV out

-
3dfx Voodoo 4 4500 VSA-100 AGP ??MHz ??MB SDR DVI/TV out

-
3dfx Voodoo 4 4800 VSA-100 AGP ??MHz 64MB SDR

-
3dfx Voodoo 4 4800 VSA-100 AGP ??MHz ??MB SDR DVI

This one is being discussed in another topic, so we know this one is for real.
-
3dfx Voodoo 4 4800 VSA-100 AGP ??MHz ??MB SDR L-Card

Daytona's
Not completely sure about the 4200's, they could be Napalm's.
Except for the 16MB 4200, that's the IBM card.

-
3dfx Voodoo 4-2 4000 VSA-101 AGP 166MHz 16MB SDR

-
3dfx Voodoo 4-2 4200 VSA-101 PCI 143MHz 16MB DDR DVI

-
3dfx Voodoo 4-2 4200 VSA-101 PCI 143MHz 32MB DDR DVI

-
3dfx Voodoo 4-2 4800 VSA-101 AGP 143MHz 32MB DDR TV out

-
3dfx Voodoo 4-2 4800 VSA-101 AGP 143MHz 32MB DDR DVI/TV out

Cards in blue are correct, might be missing some specs though Grin

Cards in Green are unsure.

- 3dfx Voodoo 4-2 4800 VSA-101 AGP 143MHz 32MB DDR DVI//TV out

you got those two mixxed up my friend

there is no AGP 4200 known. but there is a Voodoo4-2 4800 AGP with Tv-out aka Rolo01's card.
here the two Voodoo4-2 4200's and the Voodoo4-2 4800.

Voodoo4-2 4200 +DVI PCI 16MB DDR FalconFly's card.
...

Voodoo4-2 4200 +DVI PCI 32MB DDR FalconFly's card with DVI port still attatched to the card.
...

Voodoo4-2 4800 +TV-Out PCI 32MB DDR aka Rolo01's card, he told me once it runs at 143Mhz core/mem.

Okee, adjusted the colors and a name.
But I'm still in the dark on these cards:

- 3dfx Voodoo 4 4000 VSA-100 AGP ??MHz 16MB SDR
- 3dfx Voodoo 4-2 4000 VSA-101 AGP 166MHz 16MB SDR

Is there only one 4000? And which one is it, the VSA-100 or VSA-101?

- 3dfx Voodoo 4 4500 VSA-100 PCI ??MHz ??MB SDR DVI/TV out
- 3dfx Voodoo 4 4500 VSA-100 AGP ??MHz ??MB SDR DVI/TV out
- 3dfx Voodoo 4-2 4800 VSA-101 AGP 143MHz 32MB DDR DVI/TV out

I know there is a V4 PCI with a DVI and TV out and there's also at least one AGP version (see below). But I don't know if they are Napalm's or Daytona's and whether or not the numbering is correct.

- 3dfx Voodoo 4 4800 VSA-100 AGP ??MHz 64MB SDR
- 3dfx Voodoo 4 4800 VSA-100 AGP ??MHz ??MB SDR DVI

And what about these two? Are they VSA-100 or VSA-101 cards?

Seem to be wrong about something here, could've sworn I've seen a V4 AGP with only DVI. Can't seem to find the image of it though.

I have only seen pictures of the one, unknown speed, chances are though if it is a first run card it will be 100 mhz or 143 mhz.

Don't forget the V4-4400 (143 mhz 4500)

Quote:
- 3dfx Voodoo 4 4800 VSA-100 AGP ??MHz 64MB SDR
- 3dfx Voodoo 4 4800 VSA-100 AGP ??MHz ??MB SDR DVI

And what about these two? Are they VSA-100 or VSA-101 cards?

It's a good question I brought up in another thread- The question is just what is a 4800? I don't think it's board options (TV vs non-TV) since 3dfx has not renumbered cards based on board options.

So that leaves clock speed and ram configuration. We do know 3dfx changes board names vs ram configuration (V5-5000 vs V5-5500) and they were considering selling a 64MB single VSA-100 board.

clock speed is a bit hazy, but the V5-6000 was suppose to ship at 183 mhz at one time and was still called 6000.

How do you know it runs at 143mhz?

See post in hardware section regarding VSA card naming. How can one card be a 4800 and another be a 4500 if they both have the same clockspeeds, interface and ram configuration?

They can't unless the cards have the wrong bios which is looking to be more common then thought. Oscars "L-Card" is a perfect example since we know the L-cards are 4500's and my 64 MB card is another perfect example since the bios on the card can't even *see* the extra ram on board and only reports 32 MB.

well Osckhar has that V4 4800 with TV-Out and DVI and it's known that that card is a V4 4800 the seller of that card showed a pic of it's prompt screen at the dutch 3dfx site I can show you a pjoto of it's prompt screen , here it is:
...
and here the card:
...
...

And I don't know why 3dfx would call the card Voodoo4 4800, but this is a V4 4800 PCI, it was on ebay also once. and these photo's are those photo's I saw at ebay that time.
And about that Voodoo4 4000 AGP with 16MB DSRAM a chech bloke has it and he said it runs 166Mhz not 143 sorry my fault there. I got this info from http://www.3dfx.cz/3dfx.htm ; 8)

Oscar has an L-card with a 4800 bios.

Quote:

And it states it has 32 MB of ram so it is NOT a 4800.

The cards are flashed to different bios all the time, what the bios reads can't always be trusted and have point out several examples.

I'm in contact with the person who purchased the 64MB AGP card with TV and DVI like mine and guess what? It has the wrong bios since the bios that is on the card does NOT support TV out even though it is on the board.

I'm positive 3dfx did not name a single VSA-100 chip board "4800" based on clockspeed since if a board was rated for 183 mhz spec it would have 5.4/5.5 ns ram which none of these examples do.

So logic dicates a 4800 = Single VSA-100 board with 64 MB ram.

Obi, I take it you have this information from 3dfx.cz? This guy is probably guessing too. I think there is really nothing known about this card , so I have to agree with Gary here. Unless we find the owner of it (no-X doesnt have it for as far as I know) it will always be a mystery. Although I know you all think its a VSA100 card, I still believe it is Daytona

it's also hard for me to even read chech language Smiley oh well, don't worry 'bout my fuzziness sometimes I pannic ... sorry I had a bad time....

Could you guys please use thumbnails? Not everyone has a high resolution. Thank you Smiley

Another try at this:

Blue
= Confirmed
Purple
= Confirmed, missing/uncertain specifications
Green
= Uncertain, could or could not exist
* = see note about this card

Napalm:
-
3dfx Voodoo 4 4000 VSA-100 AGP ??MHz 16MB SDR
*

-
3dfx Voodoo 4 4500 VSA-100 PCI 166MHz 32MB SDR

-
3dfx Voodoo 4 4500 VSA-100 PCI 166MHz 32MB SDR DVI

-
3dfx Voodoo 4 4500 VSA-100 PCI 166MHz 32MB SDR DVI/TV out

-
3dfx Voodoo 4 4500 VSA-100 PCI 166MHz 32MB SDR DVI (Mac)

-
3dfx Voodoo 4 4500 VSA-100 AGP 166MHz 32MB SDR

-
3dfx Voodoo 4 4500 VSA-100 AGP 166MHz 32MB SDR L-Card
(
Wrongly named as a V4 4800
)
-
3dfx Voodoo 4 4500 VSA-100 AGP 166MHz 32MB SDR DVI/TV out

-
3dfx Voodoo 4 4800 VSA-100 AGP 166MHz 64MB SDR

* Card exists but which core it has is argued about.
I believe it has a VSA-100 core since it's on a photograph with VSA-100 only cards. See here.

Daytona:
-
IBM Voodoo 4-2 4200 VSA-101 PCI 143MHz 16MB DDR DVI

-
3dfx Voodoo 4-2 4?00 VSA-101 PCI 143MHz ??MB DDR DVI

-
3dfx Voodoo 4-2 4?00 VSA-101 AGP 143MHz ??MB DDR TV out

-
3dfx Voodoo 4-2 4?00 VSA-101 AGP 143MHz ??MB DDR DVI/TV out
*

* Questioning this card's existence.
There are two Napalm versions (AGP/PCI) which have DVI & TV out.
Might have confused the AGP version for this one?

Unknown:
-
3dfx Voodoo 4 4?00 VSA-100 PCI ??MHz ??MB SDR DVI/TV out

-
3dfx Voodoo 4 4?00 VSA-100 AGP ??MHz ??MB SDR DVI

-
3dfx Voodoo 4-2 4?00 VSA-101 PCI 143MHz ??MB DDR TV out
*
-
3dfx Voodoo 4-2 4?00 VSA-101 AGP 143MHz ??MB DDR DVI
*

* Thinking out loud; are there PCI TV out and AGP DVI Daytona's?

We're gettin' there, slow but steady Grin
small note: we're talking about 3dfx' Voodoo 4 and Daytona cards. V5 not included Wink
