Title: AM2+ board recommendations.... Post by jandarsun8 on 05.04.08 at 03:18:21
After 5+ years of a machine that I've just been swapping parts out here and there (see sig for final build), I'm finally buying a new machine. Problem is there are so many options now, I'm looking at all this going DUH!
Got a general idea of what I want, however I'm looking at recommendations for AMD AM2+ board that supports the Phenom chip. I've been reading some of the reviews on some of the boards and Gigabyte boards have been having issues with literally burning up. So I want to stay away from those but what about DFI, Abit, Asus, Foxxcon, Elitegroup, MSI? Biostar is a no-go as well. Elitegroup I know some many think are at the low end of the spectrum but I've had three of them and have had pretty good luck with them in the past. My Voodoo system and Kryo II system are still up and running with 2400+ cpu's and DDR so that's cool. Foxxcon I've heard are also at the bottom however DFI and Asus seem to be at the top and are demanding top dollar for the boards as well (179.00 US$). Sooooo I guess I'm wondering what's in the middle of the pack that you guys may be running or have ran that seem to be more solid then others either in current configs or machines that you've had? This will be running XP, and I've already order the 3870x2 vid card from here. http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16814121228 |

I'm running a Gigabyte AMD AM2+ board and it rocks, my last Gigabyte board a P4 848 is still going strong after 6 years of operation. Check out the MB I'm running, very happy with it- http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16813128081 So far rock solid. |

yup,the amd am+ boards from gigabyte are pretty good, running the same one as Gary..but I must say that I liked the asus cpu fan control much better-3 options in BIOS (maximum, dynamic and silent),you just chose "silent" and that was it,no more tweaking and toying around.on the gigabyte board you have to tune it manually via their easytune5 app, which is clunky, impractical and even caused a system crash two or three times.I hate the spin up/spin down sound the fan produces when booting as well (easytune5 kicks in only after windows starts)..the ability to set RPM in BIOS manually would be much, much better..anyway,I plan to fix this by running the fan at maximum and adding a manual RPM controller..

Thanks guys! After looking at the Gigabyte boards that were starting on fire, they were the lower models so I went with Exxe's choice of a Gigabyte board.
The rest of the components that are now on the way: Phenom 9550 chip ASUS 3870X2 Radeon GeIL 4 gig DDR2 8500 dual channel kit (2x2gig) two Seagate Barracuda 7200 250g drives ASUS Xonar 7.1 PCI-E 1x sound card ASUS DVD burner Samsung DVD player That's it so far. Probably going to get a case locally here since shipping is 20$ from newegg and I can pick out one right then and there. I'm probably missing something but I'll get that figure out once I get everything here and start to put it together. |
