I recently came into possession of a used HP, slim-ish style pc.  So far things have gone well enough getting it up and running, XP installed drives work fine, Optical drive is ok.  But several drivers didn't load, onboard vga and onboard DVI video, onboard sound, SM Bus, drivers for both the onboard Gigabit Ethernet and a PCI gigabit ethernet, to name a few.  I think I have the SM Bus and vga video drivers semi sussed out.  Question one, will the Catalyst drivers make the DVI run as well?  How can I find out what sound card is onboard? 

Specs of the pc: AMD 64 3000+ cpu, I forget the name of the cpu, @ 1.8GHZ
512mb PC3200 DDR 400 ram (of which I am looking for more, if anyone has any for a decent price I may be interested depending on price and shipping costs)
twin 80gb SATA drives, unsure if it is SATA or SATA2, is there a way to check which it is? 
dvd-r/cdrw combo optical drive
onboard 64mb ati r200 series radeon video (exact model unknown)
Intel HaM 56k modem (hooked this into it today, actually had to cut pieces off the bracket to get it to fit, as it is for a full tower pc)

Is there a silkscreened company name on the motherboard? Or model #?
Do you know the model of the HP PC the parts came from?
Answers to these questions should help find the info on the motherboard make/model and then drivers for them.   :)

The best way to identify a device is by inspecting its vendor ID and device ID. You can use any tool that lists device IDs (for example, the LSPCI command in some Linux Live CDs), and then search for those IDs in PCI device ID databases. Alternatively you can also use a tool that comes with its own device ID files (SiSoft Sandra, AIDA32/Everest/Aida64, SIV, SIW and others). Here are some useful links:

I used PcWizard the other day and all I got was that it is an MSI board, and AMD cpu.  I will rechecck to see if it gives exact model.  As foe logo, I didn't see one other than the logo on one chip, which was an ATI IXP 400.

EDIT:  Stupid me...just foudn out what cpu it is, how'd I miss the sticker on the front of the pc, I;d like to know?  Gah....it's an AMD Athlon 64. 

Ok, some further info about the pc: The Motherboard is an MSI 09AC with an ATI RS482 chipset. 

The cpu is an socket 939 AMD Athlon 64 3000+ code name: Venice 1.8ghz
The bios is Pheonix Thechnologies 1.18, dated 08/01/06  Any way to get than updated? 

Question: I downloaded the Catalyst drvers, but they did't work cause there is no video drive rloaded other than this cruddy VgaSafe thing.  it reccomneded loading a standard video driver, but I can't seem to rmember how to get to those drivers.  No matter what I try it always gives me ATI drivers only.  Where can I find this driver?

edit:  Can someone remind me how to get to install the standard video drivers in XP?  I;ve tried the one method I could think of, installing a new device, and the standard video drivers weren't there to choose from.

Really?  I didn't know that, so thank you for mentioning it.  I will give that a look tonight. 

EDIT:  Ok, so wait, one page mentions Catalyst 10.2, I'm trying to install version 6.11, shouldn't that work for old product?  So far, I can't even identify the type of onboard video I have, I tried GPU-Z and nothing, I mean no info whatsoever shows at all on it. 

2nd EDIT: Just fiddled around with some of the drivers that come with XP and it seems that the ALL-IN-Wonder Radeon 9200 drivers may work, though they aren't likely the 100% correct drivers.  I need a way to determine exactly what setup I have on the pc, any ideas?  The DirectX way failed, it showed no card at all under the display tab, and only the stupid vga.dll driver, which is an uber-stupid driver with limited functionality. 

3rd edit:  Grrrr...so much for the all-in-wonder driver working.  In safe mode it loaded fine, but in regular mode, it couldn't start the adapter. 

If you can install the network card drivers and get it online, go to Windows update (select the custom option) and see if it'll find it. With XP, I've had luck doing it that way with Intel cards along with older Nvidia cards when working on other systems for people. It's something you'll have to do anyway and it might find some of the other drivers for you like the on board sound.

Did you try to identify your motherboard's PCI devices by their Vendor ID and Device ID? Did you follow the instructions on the Microsoft knowledge base articles to reinstall VGA driver? It's hard to help you without getting ANY feedback from you, and I'm getting tired of this. Here goes my last attempt: save the attached code to a .CMD file and run it. Then post here the output file (pci.reg). I'll try to identify your motherboard devices by myself.
