hey ho cheerful collector peeps! Cheesy I'm impressed with the resources this site has to offer, but not as much as I'm astounded at the fact that people collect out dated gfx cards o.O;;;

anyway, I have an issue and I hope you 3dfx guru's can help me out! I'm trying to run an old Colormaster Voodoomania with some s3 virge. I have a P1 166Mhz and 50MB RAM, running win98. I've tried about 10 different sets of drivers, including the Monster3D one, a bunch of different voodoo ones, tried random programs, quite a few of the applications this site has to offer. DX5 is installed. I was hoping somebody might have the original driver for it???

Embarrassed
I had them, however, not recognising the labelling on an old floppy I'd made a bootdisk out of one of the two floppies. I did this quite a while back also, so I can't really blame myself. I was a stupid n00b at the time. more so than now.... =S Those drivers were for win95 neways [dunno if that makes a difference to be fair].

thanks for yuor help!! much appreciated. And good job on the site, it's good to know some people are still abotu offering help after 3dfx went down...

Kind thanks,
~mako

i've just tried that one, no luck. i also tried the
03 Mar 1998 3dfx Voodoo1 V2.15 338k ZIP      Direct3D only, DirectX5 Driver
just now, again no success. i don't kno wot else to do. I'm trying to run an old game that used to run with this graphics card. it requires D3D and DX5. DX5 is installed, and many of the drivers I've tried supported D3D. I vaguely remember there being an actual application in the Control Pannel that was by 3dfx. Maybe the fact that it's not working's got something to do with that?..

Hmm... What is the game?

Do other glide based games work okay?

hmm
I dunno about glide. I don't actually know what that is. I'm pretty sure glide's not listed as one of the minimum specs for the game.
The game's FF7, and it has a configuration pannel in which you can usualy decide between [hardware render][software render] and it says which basic tests [tetures etc etc] it passes. I've only seen it on software so far, adn all but one test fail. I remember that it used to be able to select hardware and that'd be that. I also remember there being a tool thingy that was in the control pannel. And although I do not remember what it did, I remember that it had the same icon as the tool thing of the voodoo3 [which I've installed, but which doesn't work,.. obviously  Roll Eyes]. I've also tried several times to reinstall the game, but to no effect. Nothing changes...

i haven't tried ne other games, but I'm certian it's the gfx card because of that CP. without a working 3D card most of even the oldest games wont run. I gather that this number 9 card had only 2MB's ram. And yes, i have tried installing the patch for 3dfx and s3 vision. no effect.

I'm pretty certain that I need a SPECIFIC colormaster vooodoomania driver, which hopefully comes with the said tool too.

please please please hlp me. Do all of yuo collectors just let them get dusted up or do you actually use the cards at all? And why do yuo collect them in first place? only coz 3dfx went bust?..

Colormaster always used the generic 3dfx Reference design, so any normal Driver will work.
(unless you possess an oddball piece of Hardware noone of us has seen yet)

If it doesn't, then there's something else screwed up with your System's configuration and no 3dfx Driver can be installed correctly.
(or the Card is damaged)

i dont suppose it COULD have anything to do with the fact that I'm using win98 right? it shouldn't anyway... the minimum specificatiosn fo rthe game are 95, but that means it SHOULD still run in 98 right?.. o.O

it COULD be that the card is damaged, in which case I'm just gonna keep trying this stuff without any point, but without knowing it... -____-...

[EDIT: There's another thing I've been unsure about. when updating drivers, every now and again it would ask me about a specific DLL, MSVCRT.dll. it said that the one installed [with win98] is more recent than the one it's trying to update to. and it'd ask me whether i wanted to keep or overwrite it. Is this of any significance? mako doubts]...

Yes, technically, it should work.

Be aware though, that having DirectX5 installed requires you to use an old DirectX5 Driver. Otherwise, more modern Drivers will simply fail due to missing DirectX6 installed.

-------------
msvcrt - msvcrt.dll - DLL Information

DLL File: msvcrt or msvcrt.dll
DLL Name: Microsoft C Runtime Library

Description:
msvcrt.dll is a module containing standard C library functions such as printf, memcpy, and cos. It is a part of the Microsoft C Runtime Library.

If yours is newer than one another Software wants to install, it is recommended to retain the original (newer) one. Otherwise, other Software will likely cause problems.

strangely enuff, the game SILVER works fine, no problems at all. very strange all this. I'm starting to think it COULD have to do with the S3 Number Nine crappy card...

There are a small number of S3 Cards that cause compatibility Problems with a Voodoo1 or Voodoo2 installed.
(S3 968/868 series)

See http://www.falconfly.de/tools.htm to check for available Patches, if your configuration is affected.

thanks alot for all yuor help. what yuo said about DX5 is very interesting. First I shall try to install DX6 and see if that works better with the current drievrs. if that still fails, I'll try reverting to the oldest driver I can find...

Cheers! Smiley
