Away from the scene for a while, and have question
15.03.11 at 21:22:19

I was always a big fan of 3dfx, but have been out of the scene for quite a while.  Had my Voodoo 5 running in XP for a while, but some of the games I played wouldn't work with those drivers, so I moved to ATI.

I thought about building a retro rig, but not sure what hardware/OS to start with.  I read in other threads that there are some drivers that work in Vista/Win7, but my question is about games running in those OSes.  Do most games actually work fine?

As for hardware, any good suggestions for a commonly available motherboard.  I have several P4's and plenty of different types of RAM laying around.  I actually still have the PIII-650 that I originally had it in, but wanted something a little beefier.  I still copy of Win98 even.  I do have an AMD 1800XP with a VIA KM 400 chipset.  I can see the model right off-hand, but can pull it out and look it over if needed.

Any suggestions are appreciated.  TIA.

P.S.  There used to be another 3dfx forum several years ago.  Is that one still around?  Is this one of the better ones?  From what I've read so far, everyone seems very knowledgeable and helpful.

Welcome to the forum Smiley

for your voodoo5 if you want to use win7 then the SFFT 1.5 driver is the best.
Unfortunately you need a good CPU, the xp1800 is very poor for win7. I run my v5 6000 with an xp1800 on win7 and the system was slow.

The voodoo cards are in my opinion not for the newest OS, like win7. I advice to use XP or better win2000.

I was thinking Win2000 might be my best bet.  That's doable as I won't be doing much of anything besides old gaming on it.  What's the best driver to use?  Still the SFFT?  I used to use OmegaDrivers, but he stopped development before several other developers.

well, i used the SFFT driver because it has the best direct3d support but is not so stable. More stable is amigamerlin 3.1 R11 driver, but is not as new as the SFFT 1.5.
For OpenGl games take MesaFx driver Wink

i did not try the Omegadrivers.

I would still suggest Win98 and Raziel driver - its just incredible how much faster it is (in some games) then SFFT+WinXP.

Windows 98, was always faster for gaming at the time, was ages before I went to XP.
