Title: Trouble with my Voodoo 3
Post by Ycto on 21.01.10 at 17:46:27
Hello,

I have recently plugged in my old Pentium III again, with the Voodoo 3, 8mb card.

It is now running Windows XP, and I don't know if it's relevant, but it has been running Linux before.

Every time I start up the PC, I have to go in Device Manager, and manually stop and start my Voodoo 3 card. Only then, it works.

This is quite annoying, I figured there must be a solution, but after lots of Googling, I still didn't find one.

I hope you can help me out!

Thanks in advance.

Hmm.  Interesting problem.  I have had the same problem with my AIW RADEON 7500, and I solved it with a driver change.  What is your driver version, especially when running that thing under Windows XP?  Also, what Voodoo3 model is it?

Hello!

First of all, sorry for my late reply.

I don't know about a driver version, can you tell me where to find this?
As for model, it's an 8 megabyte one, connected through an AGP port (so no PCI, if that even exists :P)

It's really all I know, but if you'd tell me where I can find that sorts of stuff, I'd be more than happy to look it up for you :)

Thanks in advance,
Ycto.

If it has only 8MB of memory, could be a Voodoo3 1000

For WinXP you should use the AmigaMerlin drivers for Voodoo3 cards. I believe 2.5 is the last version, not sure though.

Hello again

I have tried your suggestions, however, I'm afraid none of them worked :(

The Amigamerlin drivers did not work either :(

It appears to be a Voodoo 3 2000, not 1000. I only just noticed the text that pops up and disappears almost immediatly after starting up the PC ;)

Here's what happens:
* I start up the PC, it loads Win XP in.. I don't know, lowest bit mode, but I get really ugly graphics.
* When I open the configuration, I cannot change the resolution.
* I open Device Manager, I see that "3dfx Voodoo 3" could not be turned on.
* I "disable" the device, and re-enable it
* I check the configuration again, and finally, I can adjust the resolution.

This is really strange, especially because this Voodoo 3 card has worked on Windows XP in the past (I'm running it with Service pack 2, again this should work.)

I hope you guys can help me out.

Thanks a lot, also for your interest, to anyone who posted.

try this one: http://www.3dfx.cz/download/sfftalpha41_custom.rar (load it via the device manager)

and clean the agp slot and the agp connector as well.

Hello

Well, I ran through what you said (Yeah, I did go in my PC and cleaned the thing :P, gah it was dusty in there..), but unfortunately, it did not help :(

Again, the problem lies within starting the card on start-up. Device manager then says it "could not start the device", so I just disable it, and re-enable it, then I can go into Screen settings or resolution settings, don't know what it's called in English, and set the resolution to the correct settings (1024*768).

So when I start up the PC, it just show the screen it the worst resolution available I think.

It also says "Multiple monitors", the screen I'm using is a Packard Bell TV, but it apparently recognizes "Normal television" and "Plug and Play Monitor".

Information on the card:
3dfx Voodoo 3

Chiptype: 3dfx Voodoo 3
DAC-type: Internal DAC
Memory: 8 MB
3dfx Voodoo 3 Board
BIOS-data: NO ROM DETECTED

I think there might be a problem in the BIOS, as it says "no rom detected" but I have no idea on how to solve it.

Thank you for your help, I hope you can again help me out :)
