Title: 3Dfx Rampage: Does anybody have one?
Post by blueshogun96 on 02.03.10 at 08:59:31
I've been searching around the net for information on the 3Dfx Rampage lately.  I've heard of it numerous times, but I just assumed it was another card that wasn't mass produced as much as other Voodoo cards.  After reading exactly what it was and what it was intended to do, it made me want to cry a river knowing that we would never get to see it in our PCs.  I did end up downloading some Rampage drivers hoping to find out some juicy details about how the hardware worked, and then thought to myself, "How many people actually have a 3Dfx Rampage anyway?"  Assuming one of you does, what's it like?  Did it actually have a programmable pipeline?  Thanks.

Me too. Whenever I read about 3dfx and its history it makes me a little teary eyed. I watched a few of the original commercials a few days ago.   :'(

do you have any links to those?? I'd like to see em.

And I would have loved to see a Rampage that has more then just the Rampage chip on it, too bad they never actually built a prototype with a Sage chip on board. :(

There is only one pic that I know of thus far on the net that has two Rampage gpus as well one Sage but only low res.

However I think it is a fake.

Interesting radio of the dies and yes they are typical black top BGA. The die sits the transistor side facing out while the pins are connected via flying wire method but protected in the thick black plastic. The die is bonded to the sub straight with lead tin or silver tin soldier. They should have used the flip chip method with a IHS for better thermals.

This person claims to have every Voodoo 5 6000 + Rampage.  The Rampage at the end does appear to be real, but what do you say?

well, seeing as the user who posted it is called GSDonovan, I am tempted to believe him, as he also owns www.thedodgegarage.com/3dfx where you can see them all.

As far as I know, Gary is the person on earth with THE biggest collection of 3DFX cards/prototypes and Quantum3D stuff as well.

guys from 3dfxzone.it should have the second, and Hank should have the third..those three are probably all that survived from the 20 prototypes (10 A0 batch,10 A1 batch.all 3 cards should be A1) that existed..

If I'm not mistaking, one or two A0 boards are in the hands of eastern-european collectors.

Should be correct. That one should be from ^SiRtA^/Amigamerlin used for test and review

that one is from Hank-when we were doing the first CZ-SK 3dfx party a couple of years ago,he was kind enough to send it there so we could all see it.its the one with no fan and removable heatsink/gpu.

ahh,good old times.

I can post all rampage pictures I have if you are interested..

heh.

actually,I got more info today, seems like we have a fourth one somewhere in eastern europe as well.

edit: went through some old threads, and I can definitely see pictures of 4 different boards (2x 3dfx fan,2x removable heatsinks).seems like the  italian guys actually got their hands on two,but this info is 7 years old..and the name that was mentioned was Paolo (AKA Sirta),not Nightbird.

edit2: I know you don't really want pictures, but anyway, here are the four rampage cards we know about:

Title: Re: 3Dfx Rampage: Does anybody have one?

they cannot do much, really, the drivers (and the boards themselves) are alpha, but they are functional enough to run quake3 in opengl mode and half-life1 in d3d mode..no glide support (was supposed to be provided via glide to opengl wrapper,if memory serves),UT runs only in software mode.

if you are asking if rampage can be used for some oldschool gaming, the answer would be no-v5 6000 is much better for that.

As I said in a brief reply, thanks to Amigamerlin that bring Rampage to Italy, Paolo (aka ^SiRtA^ from nexthardware.it) made tests and review of the sample. He was the owner. Next, Rampage was sold to someone. Today that person should be Nightbird from 3dfxzone.it

My guess is that the drivers are the biggest issue for the Rampage boards (programmer's intuition).  I understand that the boards were still in alpha stages and contained bugs, but if the specs of the Rampage were out there, I think a better 3rd party driver can be written.  Probably not worth it though, assuming that most of the critical features weren't finished (i.e. Programmable pipeline).
