Title: Motocross Madness doesn't like 1024x768 85Hz.

It seem like Motocross Madness, with 2x Voodoo2 12mb in SLI, in 1024x768, doesn't like the 85Hz refresh rate. Maybe it's the case with most games. So i lowered the refresh rate to 75Hz instead and it work fine.

While the games (at least Motocross Madness) still work, it will show some artifacts in menus sometimes, and strange colors on some textures, like the textures would look corrupted.

the Voodoo2 cards are: Guillemot Maxi Gamer 3D 2, and Canopus Pure3D II. (with custom longer SLI cable i made because the default one wouldn't reach both connectors). And using FastVoodoo2 4.6 drivers. Monitor is a CRT Viewsonic G70mb.

Just letting everyone know here. 75Hz work fine though.

First try other games, I highly doubt it's the game fault.

For the texture corruption I suspect that the problem is one of the V2 card, refresh problem - monitor (but from what I remember V2 also doesn't support such a high refresh rate, it has a RAMDAC of only 135 MHz).

One more thing: what CPU are you using? A lot of V2 cards will overheat in modern systems and lockups/texture problems will occur in just a few minutes.

V2 cards works best with P2 and P3 slot CPUs, P3 socket CPU is also ok (up to 800-1000 MHz), anything above might be a problem.

Athlon (especially socket A) CPUs are too fast, and the socket A motherboards are tweaked for modern cards, I don't recommend using V2 cards in such systems.

If you want to keep your cards in original state then you are right. But if you have those coolers for voodoo2, kind of triangle shaped, forgot the name v-max or tenmax or something, then you should be safe

I remember back in the day, I desided to actively cool my voodoo's, so I bought thermal glue and put a heatsink and fanon all 3 chips and used a floppycable for sli. Lol
THere were 2 pci slots between the cards. Hahaha

Of course that cooling will help, but from my experience it will only delay the problem, after a few hours of gaming texture corruption will occur.

I had a "generic" V2 card back in 99 and it worked perfectly in a Pentium I system without any cooling, I could play on it for hours, the record was 16 hours of non stop play (Quake1).

Then in 2000 or 2001 I installed that card in an Athlon 900 socket A system and I gor texture corruption in games after only a few minutes.

I installed a 12 cm fan that cooled the card from the side, this helped a bit, but after an hour or so texture problems appeared again.

The card worked properly only after I downclocked it to 85 MHz, so that might also be a solution for RaptorZX3.

And another interesting fact: a Diamond V2 card worked without problems in the same Athlon system...

the system in question is a Pentium 3 450Mhz, slot-1, with 512mb SDRAM (2 x 256mb i think, i could put more in, but it's useless), using Windows 98SE, with latest unofficial fan patches.

Though when running the game in 1024x768 at 75Hz, it's alright, no weird textures

I did a test on this system with Midtown Madness 2, in 1024x768, with similar graphics details applied, with the main video card (Radeon 7000 series AGP, 64mb i think, forgot which one but supposed to be faster than those Voodoo2 cards anyway).

Hardware 3D: slow
Hardware 3D with T&L: slower
using "FastVoodoo2 4.6" (Voodoo2 12mb SLI setup): it just run alright, little slowdowns sometimes but still playable.

Also, i changed the VGA Male-Female pass-thru cable on it, i bought those nice cables from Monoprice.com:
http://www.monoprice.com/products/product.asp?c_id=102&cp_id=10201&cs_id=1020108&p_id=6368&seq=1&format=2

Ferrite cores, gold-plated connectors, and much more flexible, so it's much easier to leave a slot space between the 2 cards for better ventilation, and that's what i did. I have a 80mm in front and a 80mm on the back, as well as the power supply fan also on the back.

But i'm still wondering...which low-priced, quiet PCI slot blowers should i buy? some are bad quality and are just very noisy with "grinding plastic noises"

But yeah, i don't mind using 75Hz for games in 1024x768. Though Motocross Madness work fine in 800x600 in 85Hz, as well as other games (GLQuake, GLHexen2, Unreal, Unreal Tournament, Quake 2...) Eventually i'll try this computer again on my LCD monitor with those better pass-thru cables, and those Male-Male cables as well:
http://www.monoprice.com/products/product.asp?c_id=102&cp_id=10201&cs_id=1020102&p_id=85&seq=1&format=2

i was sick and tired of those cheap VGA cables i have around here, and there's no way i'm going to pay 40-50$ for a quality VGA cable. So that took care of the problems (for both VGA and pass-thru)
