Title: MSI MS-6168 Post by Kaitou on 11.09.09 at 11:00:17 Hi Guys! I have bought a MS 6168. I have several Adapters for Socket 370 to Slot 1 Support. Is it possible to run a 1300MHz Celeron Tualatin on a standard board with a standard Bios with an adapter? Would a test damage the board? What modification would I need if not? Which BIOSes are safe to flash on the Board? greetings to my 3dfx colleagues! |

I doubt that a BX440 can support a Tualatin, no matter what BIOS you use. The risk of damage is low, but I wouldn't take a chance if that was my only MSI 3dfx board. available. Short story - try to find another CPU.

Which mainboard-revision do you have?
Which BIOS-version is currently flashed? |
Title: Re: MSI MS-6168 Post by Kaitou on 11.09.09 at 17:52:44
Packard Bell AMI BIOS V1.4
Where on the board does it say which revision I have? |

Once upon a time I recall seeing that an 800/256/100/1.65V [SL457] CPU was the max supported for that motherboard. I could be wrong however. ( I can verify that cpu worked with my 6168 )

\The BX chipset supports this cpu, see this old page- http://www.geocities.com/_lunchbox/ There are sellers who have the Powerleap unit which is your best bet as it has the power regulator built in.\ |

Very interesting, I found another interesting and detalied review : http://www.tomshardware.com/reviews/resurrection,573.html

Is this the right one?
http://ebay.keeneyedeals.com/img/20090610/IMG_3695.JPG I also upgraded the system: Pentium 2 450MHz FSB100 256MB PC133 It is a huge difference compared to the 333MHz FSB66 ! But I get no sound. I tried several soundblaster cards and the onboard. I donīt have the right drivers. One time I installed everything correctly but I had to turn my speakers aaaall the way up to hear "a bit of noise/sound" Very weak. Right now I have a CT4810 Creative Card installed. I am trying to get the right drivers but I donīt even know the name of the model... Ensoniq? SB16?? |

No, try this- http://cgi.ebay.com/Powerleap-PL-iP3-T-Celeron1-4GHz-Slot1-upgrade-adapter_W0QQitemZ120466057167QQcmdZViewItemQQptZLH_DefaultDomain_0?hash=item1c0c5627cf&_trksid=p3286.c0.m14 http://cgi.ebay.com/Powerleap-1-4GHz-SL6C6-Celeron-slot-1-upgrade_W0QQitemZ350251556266QQcmdZViewItemQQptZLH_DefaultDomain_0?hash=item518c9e9daa&_trksid=p3286.c0.m14 The one with the power regulator is better, but the 1.4 Celeron is not that power hungry. For a point of reference, the 1.4 Celeron uses as much power as a P3-600 33-34 watts. |

Wow, that is pretty expensive...
So if I buy one of those, I have the complete set for "plug and play" ? Does anyone have the right driver for the onboard sound of the motherboard? Also I need the manual for the Version 2 Because I donīt know how to plug in HDD LED, PWR LED and stuff |

$50 for the adapter with cpu and heatsink isn't bad. I'm pretty sure I have the manual and driver. |
Title: Re: MSI MS-6168 Post by Kaitou on 13.09.09 at 03:54:38
Thanks,
I found this link: http://support.packardbell.com/de/item/index.php?i=REFFIUP02610100&pi=platform_symphonyclub And I downloaded the drivers there. No chance. Sound Driver is installed but I have to turn my speakers aaall the way up to hear the music playing. All of the settings in windows and creative driver panel are to the max. Soundchip broken? I had the same issue with some soundcards also on the 6168. I am about to test the Vibra16 ISA and then the Terratec Promedia. If both donīt work I will give up... :( I hope the board I get from ebay will work better. I donīt know what the problem is... I am writing this right now on the 6168 on Win98SE |

A lot of boards with built in sound require speakers with an amp.
I'll try to review what I have in the morning. |
Title: Re: MSI MS-6168 Post by Kaitou on 13.09.09 at 05:01:39
Thatīs what I am so frustrated about.
My Speakers are expensive Quadral with built-in amp. |

Hello @Kaitou!
!!WARNING!! - I would advise AGAINST flashing the BIOS, I once tried this and had to send my BIOS chip to Badflash.com to get it re-flashed! I can ease your fears - as I've already tested the Powerleap PL-iP3-T... The Powerleap PL-iP3-T works fine with a Tualatin Celeron, I tested it on my MSI-6168. The only drawback is that you can ONLY run Win 9X operating systems - NOT Win 2K/ XP, etc... Also, you "might" need to re-install after the CPU upgrade... BTW the VER:2 mainboard (same one I have also) is actually an OEM board for Packard Bell only. It's REAL name is the BORA PRO http://www.uktsupport.co.uk/pb/mb/borapro.htm Originally used in the Pulsar K450 v3 as seen HERE: http://www.uktsupport.co.uk/pb/faq/model2.htm The Spec page is HERE: http://support.packardbell.com/it/item/index.php?i=spec_BoraPro&pi=platform_symphonyclub Jumpers can be found HERE: http://support.packardbell.com/it/item/index.php?i=instr_BoraPro_jumpers&pi=platform_symphonyclub Actual function of ALL jumpers including unlabeled ones... J17 = [above CPU slot] S-video / composite video out (requires MSI backplate) SW1 = [next to BIOS] CPU Multiplier setting JVSB1 = [next to J17] Keyboard +5V standby ON/OFF JRMS1 = [white jumer under IDE slot] Soft OFF PSU J16 = [Above ISA slot] Front / Rear USB enable swap J12 = [next to PCI slot 1] Function unknown? JCL/JCS = [above PC Speaker] Function unknown? J14 = [Next to PCI slot 2] Clear BIOS password Some of the above jumpers have the same pinout as THIS board: http://stason.org/TULARC/pc/motherboards/M/MICRO-STAR-INTERNATIONAL-CO-LTD-Pentium-II-MS-6119.html MSI TV OUT BRACKET - S-VIDEO - RCA COMPOSITE !!HURRY ENDS SOON!! http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&Item=250496587329&Category=115477&_trkparms=algo%3DLVI%26its%3DI%26otn%3D2 If anyone can discover the functions of J12 and JCL/JCS we would like to know.. |
Title: Re: MSI MS-6168 Post by Kaitou on 13.09.09 at 07:06:00
But what about the sound problem?
Thank you for the link! I bought one of the backplanes. Now I have one for each MS6168 :D Maybe the reason why it is so quiet has something to do with the back connector? How do I plug in my Front Panel Speaker Out ? |
Title: Re: MSI MS-6168 Post by paulpsomiadis on 13.09.09 at 07:47:17
I created a short, easy to print manual from my previous research in the last post... 8-)

Title: Re: MSI MS-6168 Post by Kaitou on 13.09.09 at 08:11:25
But what about the sound problem?
It is very frustrating to hear it only very quiet like whispering.... :'( :'( I have it working now with the vibra16XV ISA Not the best solution but I am hearing sound!! |

Title: Re: MSI MS-6168 Post by Kaitou on 13.09.09 at 17:28:30
I guess so...
It used to be normal... I donīt know what happened... I used the official Packard Bell Files... I will check the other board which should arrive next week or so. Right now I am installing the Hammerhead FX Pad... |
