Performance?
26.03.05 at 04:49:58

What kind of performance would I get out of a VooDoo5?  In terms of more modern games like Quake3, UT2k4, and Doom3?  Assume that no other parts in the system would bottleneck the card, and that I had whatever special drivers or tweak installed that needed to be so.

Normally I wouldn't think of asking such a question about cards as old as this, but going on what I've seen from 3dfx sites in the past, I've left nothing outside the relm of the real.

Quake3 is an old game so that should run at an easy 60FPS I think.

UT 2K4 should get you around 40FPS

Doom3 should get you around 5FPS.

Off course, this is all without software like 3dAnalyzer and MesaFX. (Doom3 playable on V2 SLI with specialized drivers)

I'm not sure about the UT2004 part.

This Game is insanely T&L dependent, it might easily run very slow on a Voodoo5 even with a very fast CPU (depends on Level geometry though).

With the demo of UT2K4 I get 20FPS average on my machine;

Voodoo 5 5500 AGP
Intel Pentium 4 2,26GHz
512MB PC2700 DDR-SDRAM

So I think the 40FPS is a reasonable assumption.

Well, you get 20FPS because the Voodoo5 can't deliver more than that.

An Athlon64 4000+ might get you 22FPS, but that's it.
The Card's Geometry limit is obsiously reached, no Upgrade (except overclocking FSB and Voodoo5) will get you any higher.

40FPS is therefor unreachable.

(bare in mind, the Demos also use reduced Texture Quality to keep the Demo size small, the Retail Game will actually run slower)

UT2003 ran fine with medium/normal detail on my athlon1400/voodoo5 5500agp,but UT2004 was lagging like hell.changing the resolution and details didnt help..

how would a Voodoo5 6000 react to UT 2004, the same as the 5500 couse it has actually the same amount of ram per VSA unit? or would a 6000 get a nice 41 frames per sec?

Voodoo 5 6000 runs better on 2003 then 2004 in my case. But as FalconFly said it mosltly depends on the architechture of the map. DM_Antalus was playable in high detail textures and 1024x768 though.

I dont think it was 40 frames per second or more but yeah, on a 6000 it was playable. The funniest part is that I could even play at 1600x1200 in instagib mode. Seems the weapon models and special effect are pretty demanding.

As for quake 3, in 2048x1536 I had 52 frames a second so on a 5500 you should get 60+ easy on a modest resolution. I think even 100 is not unlikely.

Doom 3 I consider unplayable. It's fun to watch for a few minutes or trying to make it run faster but playing is not recommanded  Wink...just like Half-Life 2.

oh Half Life 2 should run fine on the 6000, since it's 3d Core is made from DirectX 7. The 6000 should run Half Life2 flawlessly. My Voodoo5 5500 AGP did 34 frames per sec avr @ reso 800 x 600 x 32 at normal detail.
