Title: Sweet, got me a "special" Velocity 100
Post by ultima on 14.05.07 at 09:47:11
Hey guys,

last week, a colleague of mine said he may have spotted some old hardware in a recycle shop near his house, so I asked him to keep a look out for any 3dfx stuff.

Today he dropped by with 1 card, pitty he didn't find more.

Anyways, the pcb has the following to say:

210-0380-001-A0, which is a Velocity 100 8MB
PCB date is 3599, no need to explain that. :)
And on the front of the card, in the upper right cornor, it says rev A and the in white box next to it a big 3.

I think it's a compaq part, but dunno for sure, there is a sticker on there, with a barcode and A02595 on it, anyone have a clue??
Will ofcourse post pics tonight.

But, the ram it has, is 5.5ns Siemens SGRAM, rated for 183Mhz, which ofcourse is pretty sweet.

The exact markings are:

HY839S1632(QTQ or OTQ??) 5-5
GERMANY                A
9937              U37513

Gonna take it home tonight and see if it works. If not, maybe someone will want it for the 183Mhz sgram??

cheers

I put in the card and it booted fine, bios shows it being a velocity 100, as expected.

Runs at 143Mhz, but gonna take off the heatsink, remove the glue and put on some decent stuff and cooler, gonna see how far I can take her.

Ram won't be the limiting factor me thinks. :)

I added a small fan to the heatsink, I ran some tests, scores are following:

@ 143Mhz

3dmark99: 5950
3dmark00: 1600

@ 166Mhz

3dmark99: 6650
3dmark00: 1700

Haven't gotten it stable yet over 170, but that will be taken care of soon enough. :)

3dmark2001 wouldn't run, as the card has only 8Mb.

there seemed to be a way to unlock the second TMU also, just dunno how that could be done, it was via a software mod or something. :)

Actually SGRAM is very overclocking unfriendly, it was a noted shortcoming.

You can install normal Voodoo3 drivers, that will unlock the TMU automatically.

ah okay well I thought it was something more difficult than just installing the Voodoo3 driver, FalconFly once did it.

Not sure this is true- I had to unlock via a registy hack... but it has been awhile..

Well,

I used the amigamerlin 2.9 drivers for my voodoo 4 and 5, and when I put in the velocity 100, I pointed it towards those drivers, and it was installed as being a voodoo 3 agp.

About the ram, it's rated 5.5ns, which is 183Mhz, and what I meant by that probably not being the limiting factor, is that I had my doubts that the velocity 100 chip would actually reach that speed without problems

So I would have 40Mhz headroom before I come to the speed of what the ram is rated for.

Gonna go a little higher then 166Mhz tonight.

It is. I tried it myself some time ago and compared the benches. The Velocity was as fast as a V3-2000 in most benches.

and what would this reghack be?? I know my way around the registry, so this shouldn't be a problem.

any link??

Win9.x:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\System\CurrentControlSet\Services\Class\Display\0000\Glide
'0000' can be another number (0001/0002/etc)

WinXP:
Not sure but something like:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\3dfxvs

Add the following string:
FX_GLIDE_NUM_TMU
and give it a value of 2

OK, thanks,

I'll give that a try tonight and see if the scores get any better.

Will post back ofcourse.

Would you like to make a photo of the front as back side of the card as well, just to see if there are any other differences 8)
