Everyones opinion on a strange problem.
06.05.09 at 12:15:10

You might remember a thread I had started about a "multiple etrace error" on a game called Leadfoot. Well, I wanted to get some of youre opinions on what it could be from a hardware standpoint.

My original setup was a ddr board with a pci v5500 and win 98. I would get this error almost everytime I finished a race. I swapped ddr boards and went with a agp v5500. Same error.

I ran a sdram board with the same os and the agp 5500. Same error.
While setting up a computer for my dad, I installed it on a new hard drive with a fresh win98 install and ran it on the SAME sdram board, this time with a V 3000. No errors.

Thinking I had something strange going on with my original win98 install. I got an old 10 gb hard drive and did a format and a clean install of win 98. I hooked this hard drive up to my original ddr board and unplugged the original hard drive. Then I installed the v5 drivers, the audio drivers then installed the game. I GET THE SAME DAMN ERROR. WTF????

Maybe its the V5? Im running out of things to check. Ive already went through a crapload of video drivers. I even found a patch for the game.  Wink

Ok, Im done crying now. haha

To be honest, Im done with this crap. I almost have enough crap to put together another computer and I think thats what Ill do.

I have seen some posts in other forums by folks who said they were able to get other Ratbag Games applications to work in similar circumstances by using Software mode rather than 3D acceleration.  Does Leadfoot have a Software mode and have you tried it?

How about going through different driver vendors and different versions? It smells like driver issue to me.

Software mode actually gives the error also. Another thing that is odd is that Powerslide runs perfectly fine.

I just tried 2 previous 3dfx drivers. Got the same error as with the amiga 2.9 drivers. wow. It just seems that it couldnt be a software problem considering that it wouldnt work on a clean win98 and driver install either.

The only time it seems to work is with a v3. It did work for about 4 or 5 races when I initially installed it on the v5 rig. But it soon started giving the error. After multiple uninstalls and reinstalls it made no difference.

It must be something to do with the v5, since the v3 works fine.

ALL of my other games seem to run fine though. Except for avp2. That one never seemed to like the voodoo cards. AVP1 runs great though. Ok, now im just rambling.   Cheesy

leadfoot: extract glide2x.dll and glide3x.dll from the voodoo3 driver that worked without errors and drop them to the game's folder.see if that helps.

avp2: the only error I remember is that 16bit only capable cards were not able to run it without editing the cfgs first, what seems to be wrong with it?

You would think that would possibly fix the problem. But no matter if its software, direct, or Glide the game kicks to the desktop with the same error.   Shocked

With AVP2, Its strange. I just tried it for the hell of it, and its running good. hehe.

Thanks for the help though.  Wink

I had directx 9. But, I downloaded directx eradicator.  Roll Eyes Im not sure how well it works though. I wiped out all versions of directx. Then reinstalled leadfoot. Letting it load its version of directx(i think directx8). Still had the same error though.   Huh

Ive tried disabling direct draw, direct 3d, then ran glide and had the same error. Its wierd man.

Well. I made another attempt. I unplugged the v5 power connector and installed a v3 and powered the computer up. Installed the v3 drivers. Still had the same error.

The game won this round. I have to go to work tomorrow and I wont be back until Saturday. Next plan of attack will be to hook up the hard drive with the fresh win98 install. Remove any traces of v5 drivers. Then install v3 drivers and try again. Thanks for the help guys. Until Saturday.     Wink

Justr tried Leadfoot on K6-3@600 with V3 3500 on Win98 SE and it worked quite good. Played a few races, no errors, no breakdowns, no lockups... Only when I exit the game I get:
LEADFOOT caused an invalid page fault in
module KERNEL32.DLL at 0187:bff9e0b7.
Registers: ...

But thats not rly important. Im using the official 3dfx driver couse I use also use the tuner. Ill try the game next week with V5 5500 and see what comes up.

Someone over at fuo motorsports( http://www.fuo-motorsports.com/ )
Turned me on to a faq/troubleshooting website for dirt track racing sprint cars, which uses the same engine as leadfoot.

http://www.atari.com/us/support/faq/dirttracksprint_pc.asp#errors<br />

This computer has only been on the internet to download drivers. But, I figured what the hell and deleted the wsock32.dll and winsock.dll files which it says are the files that will be infected. Then I rebooted and re-installed the files from the win98 cdrom.

It says that any exe file in a zip archive file will be renamed to EX$. Well, I remember seeing a EX$ file in my video driver folder which I transfered over with a cd from my laptop.

I set up a computer for my dad and used a v3000 on that computer(with a fresh win98 install) Leadfoot seemed to run fine on that computer. But, that hard drive had never had the drivers(v5500 amigamerlin) installed which contained the ex$ file. It only had v3000(oem drivers) files installed on it. So, Im thinking that that file infected both of the hard drives that are having trouble with leadfoot.

So somewhere along the line I picked up the virus.  Then it attatched itself to any exe file that was contained into any zip file. Which most 3rd party drivers are it seems.

Anyways. The game actually got through the first 3 tracks on career mode. Im cautiously optimistic at this point. Its late. I have to take my truck in because of a exhaust leak. I hate exhaust leaks. hehe.

Ill update tomorrow.   Cheesy
