Title: Best driver for the V4 4500 PCI
Post by comptech_69 on 23.04.06 at 00:32:45
So I've been using the V4 4500 that I bought in thisthread for a little while now and it's been working fine under Windows XP SP2. Well, today I went to play counterstrike, and I keep getting errors all over the place. The main errors I've getting are video errors saying the card dosn't support D3D or DirectX and defaults to software mode. When I actually get the game to work under D3D or DX it lags horribly. But the game will run smooth on my nVidia Vanta 16Mb PCI card so I know it's a driver issue. What is the best driver for this card that's currently out there for Windows XP?

Good deal, I'll try that driver. And outlaw, that link you cave me is for running the game under WickedGL. I actually am going to try that also since I downloaded WickedGL yesterday. Thanks guys :)

I know I'm a little bit later  ::) but I would like to give my (first) contribution to this thread (and also to the forum):

IV. 3D HARDWARE ISSUES

Half-Life has the ability to use both OpenGL and Direct3D.   Many cards with support for 3D acceleration will provide both OpenGL and Direct3D drivers.  Which one is better depends upon the quality and performance of the drivers themselves, and will vary from card to card.

The following section explains the known driver and compatibility issues for specific chipsets at the time of Half-Life's shipping. (...)

3DFX Banshee, Voodoo 1, Voodoo 2, Voodoo 2 SLI

Get the latest drivers from your card manufacturer or get the latest drivers directly from the 3DFX site. Half-Life ships with the current, tested GL mini-driver. Make sure that you have Glide version 2.54 or above. Half-Life does not support Direct3D on Voodoo cards.

I use Win98SE, DirectX 9.0, and run Counter-Strike in OpenGL mode.

Still better, then. But wouldn't have better performance running in OpenGL?

AmigaMerlin 3.1 R11 is the best driver for Win2K Pro/XP Pro
here it is :)

Combine this with Wicked 3D for the best performance or if your PC is fast enough use Mesa FX 6.2.0.2 for the best image quality ;)

Hmm, difficult. I don't think the newest AmigaMerlin drivers are always the best driver. Generally they are better with faster CPU's. On less powerfull systems (i.e. AMD Athlon 700) the original 3dfx drivers can easily be faster. (Tested with Voodoo5 5500 AGP)  :).

I think it's best to test the latest (and some older) Amigamerlin driver and the latest 3dfx reference driver. The one that runs best on your system is the driver that stays on your system  ;D.

Yes indeed. Ff the PC is fast enough the latest drivers are very good :).
