Hello,

Here is one of my 3dfx Voodoo5 5500 PCI.

-> Unsold original 6 ns sdrams and sold new 4 ns sdrams.

-> Unsold original VSA-100 Rev.220 and sold new VSA-100 Rev.320.

So, let me guess, now you're going to add a good heatsink and overclock the card to see it's potential?

This came in very bad stated. Many components left (Condensator and resistences), some of them very bad solded- seems like some one tried to fix it. This card needs tune up and It will be done soon.

Card did not have problems for updating new TSOP. Problems showed up with BGA rework. The first VSA-100 added did not work. It appears they were in very bad condiction, like refurbished. The seconds VSA-100 added worked without problems just the card lost in the proccess CHIP SSOP24 ( U509 & U509) and they were added like you can see in the picture.

Yes, very nice card.  8-)

- Oscar.

Yes you are right.
The idea is build a fast Voodoo5 5500 with agressive timmings and passive cooler and check the performance with a common V5500.

I hope those 320 didn't come from a Voodoo5 6000.

Voodoo 4 I bet, they were released the latest.

Why not do the 128mb mod at the same time, this would probably bring more speed, or not?

Looks very nice anyway  :)

Did you change both VSA100 by yourself? I'm able to solder BGA chips but only smaller once. If you did solder them yourself maybe you can give me a hint.

A little repair left, but the card looks good so far.

Hello Gary,

The only cards with latest 3rd revision silicon (355-0026-320)  are only present in the 6k 3700/3900 A rev. ( Such rev should be stable over 200MHz). V4 comes 355-0026-200/220  like v5.

BGA rework is done across a BGA station not via hot air gun though. Once work is done BGA is tested under ray-x scanner to check there are not short circuit between 'pins'.

TSOP/BGA reworks are done by a special friend of mine.

Regards,
Oscar.

Learn something new every day- I forgot about the chips sold on sites like Ebay.

Wasn't there also a rev 330 of the VSA100 on some Voodoo 5 6000 Rev 3700 cards?

Nope, I gues you mean 230- it is only used on 2600 A2 6k.

Ahh ok. Yes, I had 4 revisions in my mind, so then it must be the 230.

Thanks for sharing, hardware mods are cool to see.

Is osckhar doing the work?

Sorry to budge in like this, but someone talked a little earlyer in the thread about doubling the ammount of RAM on the 5500. Aren't the VSA-100's built for only 32 MB support ? ...thus meaning that the card would only recognize 64 megs of memory ?

I'm quite confused because I've withnesed another discussion on the board about enlarging the memory of a VooDoo 3... and someone demonstrated with the Avenger datasheet that it couldn't be done because of the chip limitations.
:-/

Officially a single VSA100 can address up to 64MB, so 128MB for a Voodoo 5 can be done and also was done ;)

I've also heared of the VSA100 to be able to work with 128MB, altough it wasn't officially supported in the Specifications. But I'm not sure about this since I haven't seen any proof of this working. No matter how, a single VSA100 equiped with 128MB doesn't make much sense, the chip itself isn't powerful enough to run into memory limitations.

Didn't know that.
I'll start looking for the VSA100 datasheet to enlighten my memory.

Thanks man.  8-)

Thanks :)

Hehe, it also gives a boost when using a very high resolution and AA 8-)

So the card is memory limited at higher resolutions, if the frame rate goes up with 128mb.

The card doesn't work in game.
Bad sdram solded I think..

bad news.
did you try to resolder the chips ?
Or maybe its a timings problem, that need to be changed in the bios ?
there is the rainbow bios, witch let you chamge some parameters into the bios. You know this bios ?

How about if you select Single Chip mode? Does it work then?
