So we're getting to the point that Microsoft's DirectX is literally invading the market.

Correct.

If I remember, Microsoft had made some promises about Direct X but were far behind and DOS gaming was still very much the dominate force in the gaming market.

If you look at the first early 3dfx games by and large they are DOS based.

Windows 95 was touted as a gaming platform by Microsoft but it got off to a very shaky start.

DirectX has all but won and taken over as the api of choice for game developers  Angry

If not for John Carmack's (id) enduring affection for using OpenGL, nobody else seems to really want to use it anymore  Shocked

Microsoft has a peculiar way ($$$) of almost always getting what it wants  Wink

I didn't say Microsoft's way of acting's good; nevertheless DirectX is almost the choice for every new game I see. I didn't say it was neither, because that would be hypocrite from me.

I had posted about this card about 8 month to a year ago but at the time, Club 3D had a link to an England site or someplace (can't really remember) but they wanted way to much for the card vs performance especially with the driver issues they were having at the time along with performance against ATI or Nvidia at the time so I lost interest in it. Now that the Kyro cards are near to useless and don't seem to be coming out with anything anymore I think XGI has the best chance to hopefully one day give the two big boys a run for their money. I hope they stick with it at any rate. Sorry this wasn't really any help with finding the card but if I find something on it, I'll post it.

Useless? Why useless, I'm still using one and planning to put another one in another PC, they run games like RtCW, Q3, Diablo II, Unreal and many other just fine!

Ok, your right, they are not "useless", I didn't really mean it that way. I have two of those cards my self and swap it out with my V3 depending on what games I play. Was more or less just in the over all context, that's all. More just frustrated with the fact that they had a great card and that nothing has come out since the Kyro II, that's all.

They have the 8300, 8600 and (later) the 8900-type Cards on schedule.

The Volari 8300 will be revealed on Nov 9th, so it's just a few days.

Some Images and description :

Generally looks like a similar market as the S3 S20 series, so the battle for Budget, OEM and inexpensive Mainstream continues Smiley

"but according to Danny Lee, they should be within the next two months."

...referring to the XGI 8600...
this interview was on 31.may 2005...

so i think, XGI has no chance.... as S3, they are to late in presenting a competitive geforce6600 product...

... cause nividia soon will launch der 7x00 series value products...

well they have been on the market for quite some time, only thing is there are no Mainstream GeForce7 vased cards, so they are still pointless for the Mainstream user, S3 S27 is still the best choice for the Mainstream, you are talk'n about High End, while XGI and S3 are headed at Mainstream.

and nV's only Mainstream product is thier Geforce 6600 based card, so XGI & S3 arent late at all Wink
