Title: Is there any point to getting a V5 for glide gaming?
Post by C.Zoui on 04.03.09 at 06:38:55
That's ironic.  I just found this thread.  When looking at the specs for the V5 vs. V2 SLI, I was stoked that the V5 could do 32-bit glide rendering to the V2 SLI's 16-bit glide.  Unlike many of you, I'm only interested in what the Voodoos can do in glide.  Now I find out that virtually no games were made for 32-bit glide.

And if I'm correct in my perception that most glide games had version 2.x or earlier, that the Voodoo5 only supports 3.x glide, and that 2.x glide or earlier was not compatible with 3.x glide, the V5 can't play a lot glide games either.

If you're only going Voodoo for glide, is there even any point at getting a V5 instead of V2 SLI?  I understand that some 2.x glide games have patches to run in 3.x glide, but:
1) What proportion of 2.x games do?
2) How well do most of these patches work?

The Voodoo5 support all versions of Glide. You can play any Glide game with it.

It's called 'backwards compatibility'. Glide 3 includes Glide 2 and Glide 1.

It's like Windows' service packs; each new one includes the older ones.

Thats exactly why I picked up a v5. I dont really care about any newer games. I had a v2 setup that worked well. But, after upgrading to the v5  pci I couldnt be happier. With the fsaa, 32 bit color, Higher resolution, and the fact that it is a standalone 2d/3d video card makes it hard to beat. Of course I still have the v2s put away.

A v3 3000 wouldnt be bad either.  They are very cheap on ebay. You can go slightly higher resolution that with v2sli. And its a standalone 2d/3d card.

The v3 and v5 cards seem to have no problem with the early glide games what so ever.

So the Voodoo5 supports 2.x glide or earlier just as well as the Voodoo2?  Apparently, I've been misinformed.

Yes it does. There's only a small number of Games, that only work on Voodoo Graphics (at least without some workarounds), but all games that can be played on V2(SLI), can be played on V5 too.

But 32Bit Glide doesn't exist. The VSA100 can render 32Bit in OGL/D3D, but Glide is limited to 16Bit (22Bit Postfilter is possible though).

Wasn't the community working on 32bit Glide? Glide4.x or so?

What games are these?  Is there a definitive list?

But 32Bit Glide doesn't exist.

voodoo4/5 supports 32bit glide-you just have to force it (with a batch file),for example:

Code:
set FX_GLIDE_BPP=32
UnrealTournament.exe

the smoke effects will be smoother.

..and there should be a couple of glide3x games that support 32bit natively-turok2 should be one of them,I think.

anyway,to answer the thread starters question,YES,there are still some 3dfx games that cannot be executed in 3d mode unless there is a hardware glide device present in the system (I like to call them GOD games-glide or die ;D),as no glide wrapper up to this day can emulate depth buffer "compare to bias" modes (think uprising 1/2*,esoteria nad perhaps others, basically if you run a 3dfx game via a glide wrapper and all you see is hud/2d sprites and everything else is gray/black/whatever then you have a clear case of a game requiring compare to bias)..

*one guy over at 3dfxzone forum is actually offering money for a d3d patch for those two games,if someone thinks he is capable of doing it I can pm his email address.

Does Mechwarrior 2 work with the Voodoo5 5500?

Well, I have no proof, but I heard differently.
