[S] Voodoo 4 Engineering Sample & Blank V3
08.11.11 at 08:04:56

Greetings Falconfliers!

You may have recently seen the eBay auction for my Voodoo 4 Engineering Sample. You probably also saw it's zero bids! As soon as the auction ended, I started receiving PMs both here and on eBay. I want to give anyone that wants to bid a fair chance at giving this card a good home. This auction is for BOTH the Voodoo 4 & the blank Voodoo 3 card.

First, some info:
- As best as I can remember, the card currently has the BIOS that I received it with when I won it on eBay around 2002ish. I've talked about this a few times, and my memory is fuzzy about this at best. I remember experimenting with a different BIOS or two, but I am pretty sure I returned the card to the BIOS I received it with. When I first started talking about selling the card, though, I had referenced different BIOS revisions. Really, I'm not 100% sure, but I'm not trying to scam anyone -- I just don't remember.
- Currently the card, on boot, shows "Voodoo5 6000 BIOS - Version 0.28", with 32768K RAM. I have no basis for the following theory except for that BIOS line -- but maybe it's a prototype V5 6k? Or maybe someone at 3dfx was just testing V5 BIOSes on it? I don't know, nor do I have any information.
- The card displays some wavy lines. I remembered this from when I first bought the card, but a few weeks ago when I tried it again the lines were gone. However, trying it again today, they're back. Maybe there's a loose connection on the card? I don't think it's my monitor because I remember the problem from years ago.
- Despite the slight display issues, as far as I know, this is the only Voodoo 4 sample that is functional at all. Please correct me if I'm worng.
- The Voodoo 3 looks like a generic V3 card with no chips or electronics ever soldered on to it. I know there's at least one more out there somewhere, because I was bidding on both at the time. Smiley

Part 2: Card porn:
V4:
...

V3:

Part 3: Price / Auction / etc.
Price
I've said many times that I'm selling these cards for the money. That and I think they should go to better collectors than I. I'd really like to see a minimum bid of at least US$650. I have had offers in the past surpassing this number -- I've even had people since my eBay auction mention they'd be willing to pay the price of my eBay auction. I'm starting low in the hopes that someone actually bids this time. I'm also including the blank V3 by default, so this auction *should* be worthwhile.
- Please bid in at least $1 increments. Seems silly to argue over pennies.
- I accept Paypal. If you want to try to work something else out, please post here. I'm open to other ideas, but Paypal is the easiest, for me.

Auction
- Bidding will last until Sunday, November 13th, 11:59 p.m. US Mountain Time (GMT-7)
- If there are last minute bids, then I want the bidding to continue, even past the ending time. For each bid, let's give 5 minutes before the auction is considered closed. I intend for this to prevent sniping.
- If there are no bids by this time, then I will re-list the cards at a later date. I realize the holidays are approaching and maybe this is not the right time of year to spend a lot of money on old video cards.

Shipping
- Buyer is responsible for shipping costs, which I would not expect to exceed US$25 + insurance if possible. I will finalize the cost once I know where I'm shipping the cards to.
- I will not ship the card until I have received the payment.
- I will package the card as carefully as I can, using static bags, foam, nice boxes, etc. I really want you to be satisfied with what you receive. If you are not, return the card and I will return your money in full, and I'll pay for return shipping.

I can't think of anything else to say, so... happy bidding!

I was able to install Win98 and test the card a little bit:
...

It's only clocked at 100 MHz, as you can see.

I installed Quake 3 (on my P1 233 w/ 160 MB RAM  Cheesy Grin ) and it played fine. The image on the screen is not crisp, and I'm not sure why. The game played, albeit a bit choppily. No crash, but I only played for 5 mins. There's no heatsink on this thing, after all!

Free bump for awesome card, although I would imagine you get a wider audience on eBay.

Yeah, I think the price was just too high on eBay. I don't know. I feel like the card is worth the money, it's just a matter of finding a buyer. Smiley

Card is worth the money, but you shouldn't sell something like this unannounced.

Also the time of year is not exactly helping (holidays around the corner).

Halfway through the year would have probably been a better time to sell the card. But that's just my opinion.

Yeah, I thought about that, too. The original eBay auction was a month back or so... but still close to the holidays.

Where would you announce it? I've been talking about it for a while, but I haven't taken much action.
