Title: Shadow Warrior Source Code Released
Post by akula65 on 21.04.05 at 20:43:08
I'm a few weeks late on this, but on 1 April 2005 3D Realms released the source code for Shadow Warrior which as some of you know had Glide support through official supplementary patches.  The readme indicates that the Glide support is present in the released source code, but it has been commented out.  I haven't had time to see if this is true, but here is the link to the announcement:

Had to release something as Duke4ever isn't ready yet  ;D

I was surprised to hear Prey is coming out with a rented engine, old timers will remember that never released title back in the day.

I had never even heard of Prey until I stumbled over Lon Matero's Apogee page last year:

I'm not sure what to make of a company that can drag multiple projects out over a span of time that is longer than the lifetime of many gaming software development companies and repeatedly disappoint expectant fans the way 3D Realms has.  They have to be incredibly wealthy or incredibly clueless or perhaps both.

I do like their stuff though.

I do remember that Prey was first built on the Quake1 engine and after that on the Unreal 1.0 engine , and man it looked good very good for it's time, I was so ashamed that it was canceled :(.

But got some good news on Prey though, I've started a Prey Topic in the Game section :)

I think you are confusing it with something else, Prey was to use an inhouse engine made by 3drealms.

Duke4ever had a Quake II engine then an Unreal Tournament engine.

This is GREAT!!!! I just seen this post (don't know how I missed it), SW is one of my favorite games, it's got some of the best one liners in it (like when you cut a dude in half with his sword and he shouts out "You half the man you used to be! lol ) Ok, they maybe a little on the lame side but for the time it came out and even now, I get a good laugh at it. Downloading the expansion that never came out to it right now.

I wish I could program, I would love to be able to update this game or do something with it. Does anyone know if anyone might be doing something with this?

As soon as the source code was released, JonoF started work on a Windows OpenGL port.  Here is the link:

ok, excuse my stupidity here, are they trying to get it to work under Windows other then having to be installed in DOS then with this port? I can get it to work under 98 with sound using an old sound card (can't use anything new because of lack of support with dos) and my V3 just fine (graphics are decent to). I guess I'm not sure exactly what they are doing with it other then that, anyone want to try filling me in on other then Open GL and maybe having it be able to run in windows what they are doing (I mean, to me at least, other then the set up which could be a pain sometimes to setup the first time, was ok)? I mean the glide patches make it run pretty good, so I guess I'm kind of confused on what they are trying to acomlish here. Thanks for enlightening the unenlightened.   ;D  Do hope they continue to mess with this though, would love to be able to play it without the setup head aches. Multiplaying this game was great once you got it set up, but setting it up sometimes made you want to through the thing out the window or something.   :P ;D

You might want to check this link for a list of features/improvements:

Also, the 3D Realms Forums has a forum devoted to the Shadow Warrior source code and what people are doing with it.  There is a big re-texturing project for example which is similar to the one under way for Duke Nukem 3D.  Check it out:
